The SpaceWe're transitioning the property into a B&B and small wedding venue, so this is where we live and work. We'll be here to welcome you and show you to your room, private bathroom, screened or open porches you can use and answer any questions. We have guidebooks you can refer to and a 'store' of toiletries you can purchase if you forgot something and there are hairdryers in all our bathrooms. We'll bring you in through the back porch, guide you through the kitchen, dining and living rooms to your private sunny suite. There are closets, hangers, dressers, a luggage stand, full length mirror, a large walk in shower, towels and washcloths, extra pillows and blankets in the closet and ADA bars in the bathroom. This room has a new high end king sized bed. A lovely screened in porch off the living room will be dedicated to your use during your stay, as well as the main living room for the most part... our bedrooms and living quarters are on the second floor of the house on the far north side, so it's really quite private! We almost always provide a night in front of the fire, just ask when you're ready for yours! Please note we also have two other suites that are available separately on our terrace level which can be rented. Just ask if you need more rooms! We tend to shop once a week and get our 'town stuff' done all at once, so our fridge is typically too full to share space and we can't just run out to provide a personal preference or afford to have guests use our supplies. This is why we don't offer use of the kitchen. That said, if you wish to prepare a few meals, with groceries you've purchased and include the owner, we can work together to make that happen without you having to buy a bunch of spices and condiments! Check us out on Fbk @TheRidgebnb for area happenings and updates! Guest AccessYou'll have complete access to your suite of rooms, and our many porches and sitting areas and fire pit... we can talk about use of the kitchen and dining areas (extra charges may apply). You'll always enter our home through the back patio please!!! We also offer full use of our Archery Range and Equipment including throwing knives, recurve and crossbow for $5 per person... lost arrows or damaged equipment are extra ;) Trailhead and River services include drop off and pick up and we'll even meet you on the trail with provisions. Fees apply. Discounts for guests staying on The Ridge before and after extended hikes. We'll also trail buddy with solo guests in exchange for dinner or a six pack! ;) Interaction with GuestsWe're open to help plan and make suggestions, to discussing ideas if you wish to have guests join you for some visiting time out here on the property and generally enjoy interacting with our guests, sometimes we've joined in or facilitated hikes, kayaking or other activities. While we offer a minimum of continental fare (cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese, bagels and breads, granola bars, juice) and coffee and tea in the mornings, we sometimes offer 'chip in some cash' meals or to relax with us by the fire over a lovely beverage... depending on scheduling, your preference, the number of guests we're hosting at the time and if we're not too busy working on the property! The NeighborhoodGoodness it's amazing here! The trails, the lakes, the rivers, the waterfalls, the antique store towns, the cities of Greenville and Asheville are both just a gorgeous 40-50 minute drive for all the great food, art, shopping, activities and atmosphere they have to offer. There is no end to what you can get into no matter what your interests are. And if stillness, quiet, time to reflect, to think, to write, to make art, to make time count are things you want in between... this is the place for you! The best part though is coming home to our mountain ridge. our view. the peace. the Milky Way hovering over the house. the true darkness of night. the tender light of morning coming through the woods and your bedroom window. watching the sunrise on the face of Table Rock every morning with a mug of dark, rich coffee in hand. walking barefoot through the moss paths. watching the birds enjoy our gardens. fires at night. strolling down to the creeks. watching the ducks play at the pond. it's an amazing place to live and rest or home base for a little while. Getting AroundWe're in the middle of the mountains, there is no public transport! You will need a vehicle, for sure. Motorcycles are welcome and we have room if you want to bring your boat! Things are slow here. Restaurants and gas stations nearby typically close early... anywhere from 6-7p! (this was quite a shock when we moved here!) The nearest grocery is a 20 minute drive to Pickens and the really good food is all a gorgeous 40-50 minute drive to Brevard, Traveler's Rest, Asheville or Greenville off Route 11. We're pretty central to all the best bits both this part of South and North Carolina have to offer! Other Things to NoteWIFI/Internet/Cable: Internet service is not reliable anywhere in this area and we would rather not pay for or market a tool that will leave you frustrated and using your data anyway! We do not provide WIFI. We use our phones to hotspot our devices and ask our guests to do the same on their own data plan. All the major carriers connect strongly here, we've never had poor phone or data service. Besides, once you're here and start soaking in our view and experience the Milky Way over the back deck, and come to appreciate everything else there is to do and see, you might decide putting the devices away for a bit is just what your soul needed. We have a smaller flatscreen we can loan you to play DVDs/Bluerays, but we do not have cable. If we watch a movie it's usually out on the patio like a drive-in movie. Safety Outdoors: We live in foothills of the Smoky Mountains on 14 acres, there are deer and rabbits and all manner of birds on our property, as well as our own ducks and chickens. There are also black bears. There are snakes... some poisonous. There are packs of wild turkeys living in the woods that might surprise you if you hike our trails... all these beautiful creatures are in the state parks as well. We have learned to live cohesively and to be wise, alert and respectful. The main thing is not to panic if you see them, we can advise you what to do and where activity is diminished or increased. Sightings are rare, but they do happen, so it's important to follow the rules about not leaving food or trash outside and any other guidelines we offer during your stay depending on the movements in the area, which change throughout the seasons. Note on Furniture/Spaces: This is our home. It's filled with family heirlooms, antiques passed down, furniture made by grandfathers... every piece in our main living spaces has a history and a story. There are coasters provided in every room, and we ask that you use them and are careful with our space and furnishings, which is why we say pets and young children may not be suitable, but young babies and well mannered older children are often a blessing to host... so please just be aware of that when considering our place for your time of rest!

The SpaceThe campground is tucked away in a section of the woods, down the hill and about 100 yards from the house, which keeps bear and wildlife pass throughs to a minimum. Please note that pets must be included in your reservation... so two people and a dog equal 3 guests!!! Also only tents and hammocks can be accommodated, no pop-ups, trailers or RV's please! This is basically car camping like at a state park, except you get a clean loo if you want it and aren't stacked in with other campers. We will gladly take experienced backpackers that arrive early for hike and set-up time and with proper gear and wildlife experience in the deeper woods, once we've met you and you let us know what you're looking for, and we're confident you'll be safe and prepared. We have 14 acres of unspoiled and some virgin woods, 2 creeks, a pond and a pure wilderness feel, with the Milky Way visible overhead in the fall. We have designated park and camp spots, pre-prepped for you with parking close by, access to the well up the hill, fire pit, a little lighting, (we're working on a site loo) and picnic table... foraged fallen wood is free, but you can purchase additional logs, as well as coffee, and/or breakfast in the morning, once you're here... just let us know what you'll think you'll want or need! Our front yard view of the sunrise kissing the face of Table Rock in the morning is amazing! Check us out on Fbk for area events and updates @TheRidgebnb Guest Access*Note it is already getting down in the 40's some nights here in early October. You must have all your own necessary gear and warm clothes, a Bear proof container or a way to store all food and trash in your car... absolutely no food or trash can remain outside or in your tents!!! We have bears, they do not typically frequent this part of the woods and we want to keep it that way for everyone's safety! You must count your pets as a guest when making your reservation as they can cause more noise disturbance, messes and get loose and cause damage as much as any human! We love them but they must be paid for as a member of the family/group/pack and leashed when near the house and gardens or by the pond where our ducks are especially!* You'll have access to designated land and fire pit, parking, access to the well to fill containers, a shared loo in the house (if needed), at least until we figure out campsite side toilet options, and access to our trails in the deeper woods and fishing at the pond - no guarantees on what you might catch, or what's in there, but our ducks are our pets, so treat them kindly! Again, pets are guests too... please count them in your reservation! please check the rules for foul weather options. Bring some cash if you don't have all the gear & want to get in on on these: per person morning coffee for $3, continental breakfast with coffee or tea for $8 and seasoned log bundles if needed/wanted for $10 per load to our campers with advanced notice or in a pinch if we have enough food to serve everyone! There's always enough coffee! ;) We also offer full use of our Archery Range and Equipment including throwing knives, recurve or crossbow for $5 per person... lost arrows or damaged equipment are extra ;) Trailhead and River services include drop off and pick up and we'll even meet you on the trail with provisions. Internet service is not reliable in this area and we would rather not pay for or market a tool that does not work! There is little more frustrating than being told a place has WIFI and then finding it doesn't suffice and having to use your own data anyway! We do not provide WIFI. We use our phones to hotspot our devices and ask our guests to do the same on their own data plan. All major cellular providers connect strongly here, we've never had poor phone or data service, even deep in the woods.

PEACE-IN-THE-FOREST RETREAT offers singles, couples, artists, writers, forest lovers and others a reprieve from the rat race by providing privacy and quiet in a very beautiful and comfortable, custom-built cabin, immersed in hardwood and pine forests of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located near the Blue Ridge Escarpment – that incredibly beautiful transition between the blue ridge mountains of the Appalachians and the SC foothills. The cabin is located on 100 acres of forested land with many hiking trails that we are fortunate to be stewards of. It is also located within 15-30 min from Table Rock, Keowee, Devils Fork, Ceasars Head, & Jones Gap St. Parks; 30-40 min from Hartwell, Lakes Keowee & Jocassee as well as DuPont STate Forest(NC); less than an hour from whitewater rivers (Chattooga, French Broad & more), & many trout streams & waterfalls. It is 30 min from Greenville, SC; 40 min from Brevard, NC; 40 min from Clemson ; 45 min from Hendersonville, NC & 1 hour & 15 min from Asheville, NC. THE CABIN - [more images avail.upon request] We built the cabin in 2004 from pine trees that we cut and sawed here on the property; its surrounded by 100s of acres of privately owned forest land with scattered homes. This provides a rare kind of quiet, broken by the sounds of animals, the wind and rain. The dark night skies also allow for great star gazing. The exterior of the cabin is made of white pine board and batten while the interior consists of white pine paneling and sheet rock, yellow pine floors, and tall cathedral ceilings throughout. Original oil paintings, quilted wall hangings, stain glass and other art impart a pleasant aesthetic quality to the cabin. LOCATION, LOCATION... - The list of “Activities” below – with the exception of hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing - are not actually onsite but within easy driving distance. For example, there are many fine golf courses, fishing and boating opportunities within 10 - 45 min. While nearby Pickens and Easley offer some restaurants and cultural/entertainment opportunities, Greenville clearly offers the widest and finest selection of these. The beautiful downtown district has many fine restaurants, the Peace Center (plays, ballet, music), museums, galleries and shopping. One of the recent additions is the restoration of the Reedy River Falls area in West End, the centerpiece of which is a curved suspension bridge (walking only), truly an architectural wonder, which overlooks the falls, downtown area and park. Other local cultural attractions include the Pickens County Museum of Art and History, located 10 min away in Pickens. The museum also operates the restored Hagood Mill site, one of the few active grist mills in the region. Most Saturdays there is music and more at the Hagood Mill, celebrating the early history of the area in terms of music, storytelling, blacksmithing, quilting and more. Its open for tours Wed-Sat. DAVID'S FEATURE FAVORITE SWEET SPOT – I highly recommend kayaking, canoeing or swimming on Lake Joccasee - one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southeast. I will rent canoes and kayaks depending when available. This deep, clear lake is literally perched at the edge of the mountains – and is thus fed by clear mountain streams, whose waterfalls, in some cases, actually fall directly into the lake. The surrounding mountain landscape with rich forested slopes and coves, coupled with the wide, deep waters provide a uniquely beautiful scene. Only one small area of this large lake has been developed - a small amount of private land and a small amount that is part of Devils Fork State Park but the rest is undeveloped forest belonging to Duke Power, SC/NC, or US the Forest Service. ECOLOGISTS DELIGHT - We are located in the Upper Foothills Physiographic Province where we have a blend of Piedmont and Mountain species. This area is the southern tip of the range for white pine, Eastern Hemlock, rosebay rhododendron and other woody and herbaceous species. Much of the land is classified as ranging from oak-hickory forest to various pine-hardwood mixes (white, Virginia and Shortleaf pines) to cove hardwood-hemlock forests. Historically, this was Cherokee land – points and other artifacts can still be found today. It was settled mostly in the late 1700s and 1800s by white settlers. Scattered homesites can still be found from this period. Cotton and corn was planted on much of the land in the area as late as the 1920s and 1930s but most was abandoned at that time. These cultivated and terraced lands, once abandoned, eventually reverted to forest and are now dominated by 70-80 year old Virginia pines and mixed hardwoods. Evidence of old terraces and erosion gullies are still evident in the forest. Other parts of our property were never plowed historically. Rather, these somewhat more steep lands were periodically harvested for timber and other wood products; heavily grazed by cattle (woodland grazing) and burned periodically. These disturbances were mild compared to cultivation impacts. The result is a much more productive and ecologically healthy forest. These forests are dominated by chestnut oak, white and red oaks, hickories, maples, interspersed with yellow poplar, shortleaf pine and large white pine. Deciduous magnolias, Silverbells, basswood, beech, sourwood, dogwoods and other species are also also prevalent. Common on some sites are ‘laurel slicks’ – thick patches of mountain laurel that appear as shiny, green, ‘slicks’ from a distance. In the spring, nothing is finer than the bountiful white blooms of Mt. Laurel. These forests support a wide array of birds, reptiles and mammals. Some of the common mammals include – deer, turkey, squirrels, fox, skunk, bear, raccoons, bobcat and, more recently, coyote Keywords: Cabin
