The SpaceThe cottage was built in 1950 and was home to one family until we bought it in 1997. Over time we have added many upgrades but it still retains the rustic charm of a typical Southern Maryland home from that period. The cottage is adjacent to our own home but it is accessed by its own driveway where our friendly dogs may greet you at the gate. Views can be enjoyed from the living room, sunroom or the creekside deck. The bedrooms are small but comfortable. Both have closets and dressers for storing clothing. There is a sleep sofa (love seat size) in the den. This has generally been used for a child or young adult. Should you be traveling with your own dog, the cottage has the added advantage of having a private, fenced yard. Guest AccessYou will have access to our dock (you will need to sign a waiver), and a launching area for your kayak or canoe. Perhaps you are liveaboards looking for an opportunity to dry out. If you are coming by boat, please inquire about free docking availability. Interaction with GuestsSince we live right next to the cottage and share a large lot, you will see us from time to time, but we do respect your privacy. The NeighborhoodThe cottage is located south of St. Mary's City in a small rural neighborhood. Access is down a gravel road used only by our neighbors and their friends keeping traffic to a minimum. There are a few local restaurants nearby--Courtney's and Spinnakers and two carry-out delis, St. Inigoes General Store and the St. James Deli. St. Mary's City was the first capital of Maryland and is now home to a museum which includes living history exhibits depicting life in early Colonial America. St. Mary's City also offers free outdoor concerts from mid-June through late July and between the Historic City and St. Mary's College, various events are opened to the public throughout the year. Solomon's Island which offers shopping along with a variety of restaurants and bars is just 30 minutes away. Or, if you prefer to stay closer to home, you can rub elbows with the locals and college students at the Green Door Tavern just a mile north of St. Mary's City. Bring your bikes! This is a great area for bicycling with wide shoulders along Maryland Route 5 for a nice ride up to St. Mary's City or south to Point Lookout State Park. There are charter fishing boats that leave for a day of fishing just a short drive from our cottage. Other Things to NoteWe live in a rural area of St. Mary's County. The closest grocery store is 15 minutes away. Depending on your plans and schedule, you may want to stop there first on your way down to the cottage. Additional restaurants and shopping are located in California, MD and Leonardtown, MD both about a 25 minute drive.

Getting AroundCar is the best way to get around, but if you are a bicycle enthusiast you have more than enough area to explore. Other Things to NoteThe house is heated Geo-thermally and water is provided from a well. This well water when run hot in a shower or sink will smell like sulfur. Explore the reconstructed colonial town by foot, bicycle or canoe. The property is next door to the private Rosecroft Manor with its 200-year old slave house. Other attractions within walking distance include the reconstructed 17th-century tobacco plantation, the restored Indian village, and the Maryland Dove, a replica of the 17th-century vessel, as well as St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The property is just minutes from the Navy’s Webster’s Field, public beaches on the Chesapeake Bay and the Point Lookout State Park. Discover Maryland’s southern heritage! Our mailing address happens to be Lexington Park, although we're located in St. Mary's City. Wildlife abounds here. Watch for the osprey, deer, wild turkeys, eagles, cranes, turtles, red hawks, foxes, rabbits, and a wide variety of birds. You can fish from the dock. Guest AccessCheck in is at 2:00 pm. Guests have access to waterfront and dock. $20 per person over five occupants. Guests will be left alone to explore the 200 feet of water frontage and 120-foot dock. Crabbing and fishing supplies will be provided, as well as use of bicycles, a large canoe, and a kayak. The owner worked as a tour guide for Historic St. Mary’s City and has a wealth of historic knowledge and knows all of the great restaurants and must-see locations in this largely undiscovered part of the world. Walk along the beach and pick up Indian and colonial artifacts. It's all here. Interaction with GuestsIt’s our experience from staying in a hundred B and B’s that it’s nice to learn about the area and receive tips on what to see and do, but it’s more important to be able to freely and completely enjoy the setting. We’ll pretty much leave you alone unless you have questions or need help. There’s a lot of history here. We'll provide a continental breakfast. There are three chickens roaming around the property: Mabel, Myrtle, and Tailfeathers. The NeighborhoodThe property is situated on the Rosecroft peninsula. The neighborhood consists of nice homes on 1-2acre lots on the St. Mary's River, St. Inigoes Creek, and Lucas Cove. It is lovely here. Our neighborhood is unique because it is part of the oldest settlement in Maryland, dating back to 1634. Rosecroft Road is the first road built in Maryland and our property is part of the first subdivision in the state. It's the third oldest English settlement in North America. We are located within the southernmost extremity of the St. Mary's City National Historic Landmark. Our property lies on St. Ignatius Loyola Creek (St. Inigoes) and overlooks Priest's Point, a testament to Maryland's Catholic founding. We are directly across from the Navy's Webster Field. Occasionally, Navy helicopters fly above the creek, although rarely on the weekends. The trailhead to the walking trails of Historic St. Mary's City is just a few blocks away. The trails wind through the woods and along the beaches of the ancient settlement. Getting AroundThere's no public transportation here. The Space1925 Farm House. Very informal - the kind of place you walk through with grass covered bare feet. Spend time on the porch- swans, geese, herons, and Bald Eagles frequent the area. Shannon Rest is our get away. It's our place to slow down for a week or a weekend. The SpaceI am an artist and like objects with texture and character. You'll notice small installations scattered around the place with old books, keys, stones, occasional bones. Many of these are gathered from my extensive travels as a dancer and teacher. The place is just off the very small main road. It is set back enough that the trees make it practically invisible. There is an occasional jet flying overhead, but it's generally quite quiet. There are good windows that cancel out most of the road sound. I live here, and work full time at the college less than two miles away. I keep the place tidy, but it is not the kind of sterile clean of some air bnbs I've stayed at that are strictly for guests. The place is available to rent as a full house on weekends as well (see my other listing). There is a big back yard and if you have a larger group, I have tents you are welcome to set up. And a couch someone can sleep on. Guest AccessFull access except for my room. That includes the kitchen, living room, screened in sun porch, outdoor porch, the yard, and the basement for washing and drying. There is an outdoor barbecue if you want to barbecue. Interaction with GuestsAs much as desired so long as it doesn't conflict with my work. We will be sharing the house aside from your bedroom. The NeighborhoodThis is a beautiful place. At my home and in the surrounding area I've come across cicadas, frogs, rabbits, lizards, constant birds, deer, and even an eagle. Lots of stars. Minutes from the water in most directions. This area has epic sunsets. It's less than two miles from St. Mary's College. You are welcome to borrow my bike to get there or explore the area. An easy drive to the NAS base. There are people fishing and crabbing on the nearby water. Many places to rent canoes. There are a ton of box stores for what you need in Lexington Park and many smaller mom and pop stores and a few pubs nearby without going into the massive commercial district by the base. St. Mary's College is constantly having fascinating free arts and academic events. Getting AroundYou will want to have a car here. Unless you're just going back and forth from the school. If possible we can arrange a pickup from the weekday commuter bus from DC or from the Base gate for a small extra charge. The local airport shuttle will charge an extra $30 to go from the Gate of the base the few extra miles to my home. I will try to help you avoid this cost and arrange a pick up if I'm free.
