The SpacePinos Altos Casita is a newly constructed elegant dwelling a short walk from the center of this mountain village at the edge of Gila National Forest. Enjoy a full bedroom with additional bed in loft, accommodating a couple and two children. All new everything, including dishwasher, washer & dryer, with a private porch and outside patio. A peaceful, passive solar place to make your get-away home - just 7 miles north of Silver City. A faraway forest home that's close to city entertainment. Guest AccessYou can walk out your door onto a trail that takes you deep into the surrounding canyons and mountains. There's a fenced yard for well-behaved dogs. An adjoining outdoor patio for reading, resting, and eating. Interaction with GuestsWe love Pinos Altos, Silver City, and the Gila, and are eager to share what we know to make your stay your dream. The NeighborhoodPinos Altos is a gold mining town from the 1860s that became a ghost town that now has about 250 residents. It is situated on the edge of the Gila National Forest on the state road that ends 25 miles to the north at the Gila Cliff Dwellings. If you like to explore the past, hike, road or mountain bike, or just to enjoy the forest and the mountains, Pinos Altos is your kind of place. We suggest guests visit (URL HIDDEN) for an orientation to the area. Getting AroundGuests will need a motor vehicle or bike to get around -- other than heading off to hike in the Gila Forest or to enjoy a meal and music at the Buckhorn Saloon in "downtown" Pinos Altos. There is on-demand public transportation system, Corre Caminos, that offers transportation to Silver City. You can park in front of Pinos Altos Casita.

The SpaceThis big sunny (most of the time) apartment and the older house it's built onto sit on six acres on a dead end and are completely private, secluded and peaceful, yet are only four miles from downtown Silver City. Drive another mile and you come to the Gila National Forest with a picnic area and several immediately accessible trailheads. You have your own private entrance and patio, and there are big windows (and country views) on three sides, with a full size bed (and an air mattress available for the intrepid). The bathroom is kind of special and has a giant tiled shower with three high windows, so you're looking at treetops and sky while you soap yourself. There's satellite TV, a desk and wifi, a couple of easy chairs, some interesting books by local and non-local authors and a big old dresser with a fridge, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, cutlery and dishes - everything you need to make breakfast and simple meals. AND I wash the dishes when you've used them and put them back clean. Give me a heads up and I'll do my best to accommodate your breakfast preferences. (There's no way to show this on the first page so I have to stick it in here. I list a two-night minimum stay. Should you wish to book for one night only, there's a $15 surcharge, making the price for the night $75.) Half a dozen deer (at least) parade by twice a day on their daily travels, and foxes and coyotes aren't exactly rare. I did once have an enormous steer and two sheep appear outside the kitchen window, but I can't promise that. And if star gazing is your thing, you can sit outside at dusk, watch the moon come up if the timing's right (and maybe a skunk or two glide by - and they really do glide; they're beautiful) and thanks to Silver City's usually cloudless weather, be almost guaranteed a sky filled with brilliant stars - much better than the TV. (One word of warning: Silver's altitude is 6,500 feet - not high enough to cause severe altitude sickness but enough to make your first couple of days here difficult if you're not used to it. It's never bothered me but I've learned from visiting friends the lower oxygen supply can easily tire you out and make you light-headed and sometimes nauseous - nothing that doesn't pass quickly and nothing life-threatening, but nothing you want while you're on vacation either! I've begun to advise anyone who comes to visit to get themselves some ChlorOxygen - Amazon and health food stores stock it - and start to take it a couple of days before they're due to arrive. It's completely harmless - made from English stinging nettles - and will boost your body's red cell production just enough to prepare you for the lower air pressure here. It's worked for all my friends so far, I highly recommend it and should you choose to ignore my advice, I always have some in the fridge! ) Guest AccessIf the steps to your private entrance present a challenge (check out the photo), you are more than welcome to use the steps to the main house shown in the first image instead. I'm almost always in the back of the house reading the (URL HIDDEN) and you won't bother me. Interaction with GuestsI'm usually here to answer any of your questions or just say hello, but if you so choose you won't have to set eyes on me after you check in until the day you leave, although you can always sneak off without a goodbye and it won't hurt my feelings.

The SpaceThis unique location puts you away from it all. Use the space for a retreat, family vacation, or wilderness sabbatical. Easy access to the beautiful trails of the Gila Wilderness and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Not far off the paved road, the cabin is easy to get to, come in and relax on the oversized covered patio. The main bedroom has a king bed, the second bedroom has a full size loft bed with a twin trundle bed. The living room couch pulls out into a bed also. The property has tent and rv space also, ask us about rates for groups larger than 6. There are two resident cats, Panther and Mica. They are independent, but love some occasional attention. The kitchen has a refrigerator, stove, oven, sink, and coffee maker (there's no microwave or dishwasher). Guests have left plenty of coffee filters, but we don't stock coffee. Make sure to bring anything you would want or need, but emergency supplies can be found at the nearby store, Doc Campbell's Post (very limited selection). Horse facilities include one large pen with water and feeding troughs. Will hold up to 6 horses for short term. Guest AccessHorse facilities, wireless internet, local phone, full kitchen and bath, close walk to hot springs Interaction with GuestsUsually neither my husband Zack nor I are in the neighborhood while guests are in the house, it is possible you may meet him when you arrive. I am available by message or cell in Silver City, 90 minutes away, and we have many neighbors who are helpful in the event of an emergency. The NeighborhoodThe nearby Gila Hot Springs RV Park and Campgrounds feature hot spring pools of various styles, all within easy walking distance of the cabin. The village has a small store, Doc Campbell's Post, that features homemade ice cream and gifts, bring your own groceries. Other Things to NoteI always ask every guest to confirm the location to make sure you understand how remote the cabin is. To see the exact location of the house and the village of Gila Hot Springs, look up "23 Airstrip Rd, Mimbres, NM" on geegle maps. (When you search for the village name you find out that geegle doesn't know everything)
