The Space***Before continuing: If you do not have at minimum of a profile photo with your actual face shown and identity verification, I will not book you*** I never book anybody without a photo, short bio, and a verification. (The photo should be of you and not of a baby, a pet, a large group of friends, and generally from within the last 5 years). Please briefly state your intentions for travelling to Pittsburgh (i.e. conference, fun? etc.) For general security reasons, it is very rare for me to book to somebody already living within or around Pittsburgh (or you live in Pittsburgh and want to house all of your relatives at my place- no thanks). All inquiries are totally welcome and we're happy to answer any questions or talk about offers !
Please note that some of the photos were taken in 2012 by the AirBnb professionals. Some things have changed (for the better), but the essence of the place and what you see are totally the same.
Ideal for artists/musicians/people who are open-minded- full of instruments, old recording gear, and vinyl records. Or- great for 20's-30's age couples or friends coming through Pittsburgh planning a fun weekend or sports outing. 1970's-"esque". International friendly, 420, and LGBT friendly. NOT IDEAL FOR: families, pets, babies, children, and/or the elderly. There are 2 flights of stairs and no elevator. You or somebody in your group must be able to communicate in basic-level English or Spanish.
Highlights include rooftop observation deck with full skyline city view and chaises, indoor hot tub (extra), full kitchen with outdoor gas grill (on a 2nd lower level small deck), Foosball table, dart board, vintage Nintendo, N64, full upstairs vintage stereo system with vinyl records/CD player/plug & play input.
Bedrooms: there are two connected rooms separated by locking french doors. Currently, the one large room features both a Queen bed, and Full sized futon (NOTE: both of these beds are in the same room). There is a twin XL sofa bed in the adjacent "stereo room"- this person would still have to enter the other main bedroom to use the bathroom- The one bathroom is at the far end of the large main bedroom. There is one additional twin air mattress. The bed linens are provided and cleaned. The one large private bathroom has a large walk-in shower (fits 2 people). There is a large walk-in closet with hangers. Central AC/Heat (your room has its own temperature control). Please note: the furnace/AC is located within a closet within the room. Therefore- be forewarned that you can hear the heater/AC turn on and off if you are a light sleeper or the type of person that would complain about this in a review or at a hotel. However, I have never had to use the heat, and barely use the AC in the summer because the upstairs rooms receive residual from the other spaces in the house. There are also ceiling fans in some of the rooms. Or- you can open any of the windows. Additionally- space heaters and box fans are available upon request.
Please note- obviously, July and August are hotter, and January and February are colder- so please understand that the host cannot change the outside weather and during these times of the year- it may seem hotter or colder than normal.
Clean bath towels and large jacuzzi/beach towels are provided as necessary. Hair dryer is provided. *Clothes iron is available upon request*. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash is included (or you may obviously bring your own).
Large grey sectional couch shown in downstairs pictures is in certain instances available to sleep on- but the living room is not guaranteed as a "private" room as it is the entryway into the place and connects to the kitchen.
Also available upon request: Washer/dryer is located in basement costs $1.00 per wash/(the dryer is free). Detergent is provided. Please note: **The host is not responsible for the cleanliness or appearance of the building's basement**. The host is also not responsible if you damage or shrink your clothes or bleach stains, etc. There is also a neighborhood laundromat 3 blocks away from the building with a drop-off service. There are no dry cleaners within walking distance, sorry (somebody actually complained about there not being a dry-cleaner in the neighborhood).
The building is centrally located in Pittsburgh within walking, biking, or driving distance of anything including a local supermarket, restaurants, bars, liquor store, beer store, Sunoco gas station w/ 24 hour mini-mart. 5-10 minute walk to Downtown, Cultural District, Theater District, PNC Park (baseball), Heinz Field (football), Convention Center, the Consol Energy Arena (hockey, etc.), the National Aviary, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Mattress Factory Museum, Randyland, The New Hazlett Theater, The Heinz History Center, The Strip District Markets (and nightclubs), The Original Primanti Bros, The Priory Grand Hall (wedding/event hall), a public swimming pool ($4 non-members; open Memorial Day thru Labor Day) and all public transportation including Greyhound, Megabus, Amtrak, and the 28X "Airport Flyer" public bus (exact fares subject to change). Large city park directly across the street. Police patrolled area, and hospital ER is within 2 minutes. The entrance/exit to Interstate 79 in under 1 minute will connect you to any other major highway and the PA Turnpike. Please understand- this is the "CITY" of Pittsburgh so please expect anything/everything common of any major American city- this includes stuff like car/truck/motorcycle engine noises, sub-woofers, occasional police sirens, couples screaming at each other in the park, the occasional drifters, poor people, etc. etc. The host is not responsible for anything that occurs to you or your guests outside of the listed property.
PARKING: host has ONE parking pass to park in the permit zone. One garage parking space is available only if you have more than 1 vehicle or an outstanding reason (like you own a Ferrari). Please confer with host regarding the number of vehicles you plan to have (if any).
The Host! is native Pittsburgher who knows virtually everything about sites, nightlife, history, etc. and can make informed recommendations or suggestions. Also can drive around, pickup, and/or, drop-off at the airport, bus stations, etc., or give tours, for additional costs (or for nothing/ 6 pack of beer) depending solely on personal availability, circumstance, practicality, and the distance/mileage/costs. (Please pre-discuss any transportation needs in advance!) In general, late evening and weekend arrivals and departures have a higher chance of any host-provided transportation- especially the airport. The host has a 7 passenger van. **Again- please don't assume you will be picked up or dropped off**
The host also lives at the property on another separate floor/space with his wife. We speak (fluently) Spanish, Portuguese, English, Galician, and basic German. The host and his wife also use the kitchen but respect your privacy while doing so (for instance, we may make coffee, clean up dishes, or make a light meal. We use the kitchen only during "normal" daytime meal hours (i.e. we do not cook food at 3 AM), and refrain from making elaborate Thanksgiving sized meals while guests are staying. You on the other hand- are welcome to make any size meal that you want to and are welcome to root through any of the closets and drawers in the kitchen. Generally speaking, we provide you with free coffee, tea, and filtered water.
Note on musical items: As shown, there is a real spinet piano in the living room. There is an acoustic guitar available but please ask. The analog recording equipment may require prior knowledge, or guidance from the host and has actually been moved to a separate recording area not included in the photos. Other musical instruments (which may require knowledge), and the drum kit are subject to availability depending on gig scheduling. **The drum kit is never guaranteed to be there**. Sometimes, under certain circumstances, the hosts band may take instruments out for gigging purposes and you will be informed in advance. Additionally, you may also make request that the instruments (except the wooden piano in the living room) be completely removed from the rooms for additional space. All instrument usage and availability is subject to the host's discretion and comfort with you using it.
We also book to touring bands and other groups privately and sometimes it does not reflect on the AirBnb calendar. Any availability is subject to AirBnb pre-approval guidelines and final review. Sorry, there is no "Insta-Book" feature with this listing (for obvious reasons).
Notes on pricing/other conditions:
I can negotiate a lower rate for parties of 1-2 except most weekends and peak-season (spring, summer, early fall). The maximum amount of allowed people in the listing may vary because sometimes couples share the same bed together. Generally, 4 people is the cut-off but sometimes 5-6 works.
The Hot Tub you may add separately. If you stay 4 days or longer you can get 1 complimentary hot tub session. If not, it costs $30 per usage and the hot tub will be set up for you, cleaned, etc. NOTE: when you arrive, the hot tub is not always cleaned and ready to use! The water may be slightly dirty, etc. Due to past abuse from guests, the risk of flooding, and the 2 hours of cleaning time, the hot tub remains subject to permission. Please feel free to let the host know in advance that you are interested in the hot tub and we will be happy to provide any additional information.
Lastly, if you intend to have a party with lots of people outside of your immediate group renting the space or are renting for the purpose of having a party- this must be completely discussed in advance and may require additional fees, security deposit, waiver, and/or possible denial of your request. You and your immediate group are totally welcome to party as much as you want and can drink and 420. Most likely- the host will party with you if you ask. If you book the place for 2 people and then throw a party for 10 people without asking- you are subject to removal from the property and will not be refunded. If you are having an unauthorized party and people are trashing stuff, etc. the police would likely be called if the issue cannot be resolved in an amicable manner. Additionally, if minors (under 21) are drinking, etc., your party (and reservation) may be cancelled due to personal liability.
Thanks for checking out the listing ! Feel free to ask any questions or make an offer. We try to answer as many requests as possible !! Please remember this is not a hotel and we must consider our personal needs and safety in addition to whether or not this would be a good fit for you based on your personality profile.
Thanks again!! Guest AccessKitchen, large lower living room (with foosball, darts, piano), stereo listening room (1 twin XL bed), large roof deck, lower small deck w/ gas grill (attached to kitchen). Large bedroom (2 beds=1 room), 1 large bathroom with walk-in shower, hair dryer. Walk-in closet. Extras: Hot tub, basement laundry room, clothes iron. Garage (available only if you have more than one vehicle). Interaction with GuestsI interact as much or as little as the guest(s) wants me to. As noted in the listing- I do live onsite in a separate part of the house with my wife and am generally "on call" as needed for any reason. Usually, if you offer me a beer or something, I am happy to hang out with you and talk about Pittsburgh, or any other topic you desire. The NeighborhoodLaid back, not a lot of crazy nightlife that causes disturbances. There are some nice restaurants and bars/pubs with real history and local Pittsburgh people and no gimmicks. Centrally located and within walking, biking, driving distance or anything within the city. Really close to the stadiums and downtown. It's an inner-city urban environment so expect to see/hear things common to any major US city and a diverse population of people and cultures. There is also a hospital nearby so occasionally you will hear sirens, etc. Getting AroundWalking, biking, driving, public buses (host is not familiar with the bus system or schedules but can try to offer assistance) There is a subway (metro) within 10 minute walk that operates from a station that is directly adjacent to the "home plate" corner of PNC Park (baseball stadium). The trains only service the city center and the South Hills. (i.e. the closest stop to the house is the northern-[end] of the train line). Ubers, Lyfts. Taxis (you need to call for a taxi they are not on the street like in NY or Chicago). Jitney "gypsy" cabs... walk to the grocery store down the street and ask the guys standing around outside for a ride and negotiate a cash price (it really works!!) Other Things to NoteWe have hosted people from all over the world including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, China, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, India, Syria, Japan, Israel, Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, England, Ireland,Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Ukraine, Pakistan, Yugoslavia, Russia, and South Korea.
