The SpaceThe guest room/deck overlook a 19th c. barn and a quiet road made famous by Cornish Colony painter William Metcalf. The home itself is located straight on the scenic Maxfield Parrish Route (12A), right next to the village town hall with a beautiful Parrish stage set. Enjoy hikes, visiting Cornish Colony homes and the St Gaudens National Historic Site, skiing, berry and apple picking, quaint museums--all in the area. The home is tastefully furnished, blending modern and classic. Please contact to check availability prior to booking and please read the details and rules to the end. Guest AccessThe guests will have their own master bedroom, bathroom, and deck (deck accessibility is limited in late fall/winter), as well as kitchen privileges. The rental does not include other spaces in the house. The guest room is on the 2nd floor and has lots of light. Sleeps two. It's fully furnished: a full-size bed base w/ a futon mattress, large table, two chairs and armchairs, drawer chest, spacious built-in closet, bookcase with lots of style and architecture magazines. The bathroom has a tub and shower. Wireless internet in the room. Laundry/drying available for an extra charge of $5/load (on premises). Guests will share the kitchen with owner, her better half, and (depending on the week) two very considerate school-age kids. The cleaning fee covers only post-departure cleanup/bedding laundry, and guests staying more than a week are encouraged to use in-house cleaning supplies as needed. Dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent are provided. For $10/day, barn artist space could be arranged. We have no pets. Interaction with GuestsDue to my work and parenting schedule, my interaction with the guests will unfortunately be limited. But I will gladly provide a rundown on the local highlights and offer some help for getting around! The NeighborhoodThe home is the middle of a historic New England village. It's beautiful year-round. The village has a great convenience store/diner, a few antiques shops, and a famous antiques auction house. It's a terrific access point for exploring nature, tourist landmarks, or shopping. Getting AroundGuests will need to have their own car. Other Things to NoteYou get a staggering view of Mt Ascutney when you enter the village from the north! If Maxfield Parrish liked it here, so will you.

The SpaceThe apartment is a post-and-beam structure with lots of open space and sunshine. Guest AccessGuests have full access to the apartment, including a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, free wifi, and local phone. Interaction with GuestsDuring the summer (we are teachers) we are around more often, often out in the yard gardening. The apartment is set up for independent living although we do enjoy getting to know our guests, as time allows. The NeighborhoodWe live in a quiet spot above Meriden Village in an area known as French's Ledges. There are hiking/cross-country trails laced through the neighboring area as well as a short hike up to the top of the Ledges which affords a 360 degree 60 mile view of NH and VT. We live on a dead end road so there is very little traffic. Getting AroundA car is necessary, as there is no public transport to speak of in the area. GPSs function fine, for the most part, in getting around, although they sometimes have a hard time finding us. We usually send clarifying driving directions to make sure you get here! If we forget, please ask before you leave.

A large fire pit with seating is in the back yard, sited between two large and magnificent maple trees (one a sugar maple, the other a red maple). Stone walls, gardens and a barn accentuate the yard. The Neighborhood(SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Earth is a great way to see our property!

The SpaceUpon arrival, you’ll immediately fall in love with our beautifully decorated home, nestled in New Hampshire's lush, green landscape and bordered by the tumbling Blow Me Down Brook and Covered Bridge. Indeed, it has been deeply loved by three generations of our family for fifty years! With enough room to accommodate up to 7 guests throughout 1,300 square feet of inviting living space, our rustic home is the perfect size and layout for families, friends or couples looking to explore all this area has to offer. Originally an old horse barn, the converted property now boasts an appealing mix of antique decor, fine artwork and modern-day appliances. We hope you will love our house as much as we do:-) Look forward to preparing delicious home-cooked meals in the recently remodeled, fully equipped kitchen, stocked with everything you'll need to create mouthwatering meals. Shop at nearby Edgewater Farms farm stand in Plainfield, and select from an astounding array of organic vegetables to cook up. When you return home from your ventures, unwind and relax while listening to music on the surround-sound system, streaming movies on the blu-ray player, or curl up by the handsome fireplace with a new read. Have dinner out on the screened porch, and afterwards sip a warm beverage in the cool breeze before retiring to one of the welcoming bedrooms for a peaceful night’s sleep. While you may consider spending the duration of your getaway lounging inside our comfortable and cozy home, you won’t have to travel far to experience authentic New England life. Just steps from the property, you’ll want to explore the Blow Me Down Covered Bridge, or climb down and wade into the brook for some adventuresome rock hopping. During your stay, be sure to pay a visit to St. Gaudens National Historic Site for a variety of wonderful outdoor concerts and events, and learn about Cornish’s history as an art colony. Drive just a few miles down the road to cross the famous Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge spanning the Connecticut River, but be sure to walk your horses or pay 2 dollars fine! Pull out your bid card at the Smith Auction Gallery in Plainfield and bid on fine antiques at an authentic auction. Venture a little further to the town of Quechee, Vermont for abundant restaurant and shopping destinations, which range from antique stores to elegant glass blowing studios. Hanover, New Hampshire, home to Dartmouth College, is located a short distance away, boasting an endless array of local boutiques and restaurants. For those looking for outdoor adventure, visit Mount Ascutney for a scenic hike or mountain bike ride with mountain top views of huge stretches of the twin states, or rent a canoe and paddle down the Connecticut River. In the autumn, you'll be in the perfect spot to watch the leaves turn spectacular colors. Venture out to try zip-lining at one of the local resorts. Come winter, you’ll enjoy easy access to NH and Vermont's famous ski resorts such as Sunapee, Killington and Stowe, all an hour or less from our home. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway with loved ones, or a more adventurous tour of New England's great outdoors, book our delightful Cornish home for an experience you’ll never forget! Interaction with GuestsWe all live far away from the house, so we will not be able to meet you. We have a team of people on the ground who can help if any needs arise:-) The NeighborhoodCornish is an old artists colony graced by such names as Maxfield Parish, Augustus St. Gaudens, and others from that time period. In our little neighborhood, we have roads that can be walked for miles with farms, horses, covered bridges, ponds, and the timeless scenery of New England. The nearest little town is Plainfield, which is about 1.5 miles from the house. There is a small general store and gas station there, a library, post office, auction house, and a few churches. If you keep driving down 12-A for 8 miles, you will reach West Lebanon, where there are numerous shopping centers, and everything you will need. In the other direction on 12-A, you will find the Cornish-Windsor covered bridge, and there is shopping in Windsor too. Getting AroundThere is an Amtrak station in Windsor, Vt, just across the long covered bridge that spans the Connecticut River. There is a teeny little airport in West Lebanon that has flights from Boston. Other Things to NoteOur neighbor across the road is extremely sensitive to lights being left on outside. Please make sure all outside lights are off before you retire for the night. Thank you!

My place is close to Dartmouth College to the north and Windsor, VT to the south. This room would be great for business travelers, parents visiting students, a solo person looking for a little getaway or a couple needing a quiet place to rest their heads. My house has wonderful views of apple orchards in the foreground and the hills of Vermont in the background.
