Portland Information Portland in Victoria is a medium sized town with a population of about 10,000 people. The township was named after the Duke of Portland in England. Before European settlement the Gunditjmara aboriginal people inhabited the area living in stone huts. In 1834 Edward Henty arrived in Portland from Tasmania and established settlement. As it wasn't until 1835 that people settled in Melbourne, that makes Portland Victoria's birthplace as it was the very first town to be established. One of the best activities to do in Portland is to experience the Great South West Walk, which is a 250 kilometre walking track which will take you through forests, gorges and cliff tops. The Eco walk features plenty of wildlife and fauna with some very spectacular scenery. The Portland Maritime Museum is another great attraction to visit. The museum features one of the oldest lifeboats in the world, a real whale skeleton and memorabilia on some of the many shipwrecks that occurred off the Portland coastline. Another great museum to discover is the Portland Powerhouse Museum. The museum holds and extensive display of vintage cars and motorbikes from the 1900's to the 1960's. There is also other automotive memorabilia such as old petrol pumps, antique signs and toys. The Portland Cable Tram is a great way to discover the township of Portland. The tram ride is very scenic and stops at some of the best tourist places to see in Portland. Along the ride you will also pass through the botanical gardens and some magical coastal strips. While in (email hidden) to see is the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, which is located not too far away. The lighthouse was built in 1884 and features a telescope, which was installed in 1885 and at the time was the biggest telescope of its kind in Australia. Villa Mont provides you with quality furnishings, eclectic art, decor, courtyard and five acres of gardens. The house is architecturally designed and built from local limestone. Villa Mont is based on a traditional bed and breakfast or pension/pansiyon accommodation found in Europe and Asia, where the hosts live on site. All types of couples are welcomed to enjoy Villa Mont.   You will find elements of Turkey in the design of Villa Mont and its furnishings. This is because we fell in love with Turkey and in particular a little fishing village called Göcek. We ran a holiday rental business in Göcek, primarily for UK and European guests and this experience gave us confidence to create something similar in Mount Gambier – Villa Mont. Guest AccessThere is a private entrance for guests, which is accessed from a large gated courtyard. The entry area includes computer desk with wifi and storage space. You are welcome to enjoy the courtyard and surrounding five acres of gardens. There is an area for caravans, with power if required. Interaction with GuestsWe will welcome you when you arrive and show you around with a complimentary glass of wine or beer. Then we will leave you to enjoy and relax. You may see us on the property and you are welcome to chat or ignore us. We are available for you if you need us, otherwise privacy is assured. The NeighborhoodOur neighbourhood has so many things to like. There is the iconic Blue Lake that turns a most magnificent blue for November through to March each year. Then there are the dormant volcanoes, the parks, gardens and walks. There are wineries in Mount Gambier and just 20 minutes drive we are at the Coonawarra, one of Australia’s famous wine regions with their Terra Rossa soil. There’s also Penola, home of St Mary Mackillop. The access to seafood down the road at Port MacDonnell, ‘Australia's Southern Rock Lobster Capital’. The Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre , Generations of Jazz and now the new James Morrison Academy of Music and the Morrison Jazz Club. We also have a farmers’ market set in the beautiful cave gardens every Saturday and a film society Reels at Wehl . There’s local shops and providores with friendly faces too. The soil is volcanic loam, we can grow virtually anything. The weather is temperate, bordering on a Mediterranean climate. We could go on but it’s time to finish writing and welcome you to Villa Mont. Getting AroundIn the township there are buses and taxis. Taxis are available from our home to the township and to the airport. Other Things to NoteFez, our constant companion, is an Australian Kelpie X who lives on the premises. He expects people to throw balls for him to fetch. There are the native plants, which attract native birds and we receive occasional visits from a swamp wallaby and this Christmas there was a koala. NB: GPS does not seem to locate our property, it will send you miles away. We will give you specific instructions when you book.

The Space The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994. In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience. Almost five years later we are still pursuing that dream. We now offer affordable accommodation for all travelers and groups. We have converted ex-prison cells into dorm rooms, twin rooms and doubles. For the squeamish at heart we do also provide rooms which were not used as cells, but were instead the warden’s offices. All of our bathroom and kitchen facilities are communal except in the family room. We do offer some cells with en-suite toilets. Double rooms contain a double bed, twins contain one set of single bunk beds. The family room contains two bedrooms (a double and a twin), a private lounge area, bathroom and kitchenette. Both sides of our gaol have communal living areas and kitchens. We have two large outdoor courtyard areas for guests to relax or play in. We provide free wifi for our guests during their stay. We have ample free parking directly out the front of the gaol walls We are happy to arrange free pick up or drop off for any of our guests to public transport depots within our business hours. Please note all guests are required to arrive and check in before 9pm at night. Check out is at 10am. You can expect friendly, helpful service during your stay here at the gaol. Pop into the office on arrival, locate your cell, grab a complimentary tea or coffee and have a self-guided tour of the gaol. We are located about five minutes walk from Mount Gambier's main street. Here you will find an array of restaurants, cafes and shops. Right next door to the gaol are tennis courts and an outdoor aquatic centre. Public transport is not fantastic, but most of our attractions are close by. The famous Blue Lake is a ten minute walk from the gaol, the Cave Gardens are about seven minutes away. Guest AccessBoth sides of the gaol have their own communal lounge area and kitchen. Bathrooms and toilets are spread out throughout the venue. Guests receive complimentary wifi and self-guided tour maps of our historic facility. Interaction with GuestsWe live on site, in the gaol. We are here 24/7. However, our admin has specific hours of operation. If the office is shut we do have a gaol box phone situated at our front door, when a guest lifts this they are immediately connected to management via phone. Guests will meet James most nights upon check in. The NeighborhoodWe are situated on Margaret Street. A very quiet street approx five minutes walk from our city centre. When arriving at The Old Gaol you will see signs at each side of the gaol driveway. When turning into the driveway you will see The Gaol building and huge double front doors directly in front of you. Getting AroundOur public transport leaves a lot to be desired. However we are so close to the city centre you can easily walk into town or to local attractions.

The SpaceTolka Cottage is cosy and comfortable in all seasons. Discreet and private in a quiet location. It is ideal for those who wish to escape from the urban environment, for families, for small groups of friends, for naturalists interested in native flora and fauna and for those who wish to star gaze in our dark night skies. Wake up to native bird song and you may also hear a cockerel or two. The famed Tolka breakfast ingredients, for a great country breakfast, are included for your first morning – fresh Tolka eggs, bacon, tomatoes, fruit, cereal, yoghurt, homemade Tolka jams & bread made by Ivy, filter coffee & a variety of teas. There is a formal sitting room and a more informal sunroom. The bedrooms consist of 3 bedrooms consisting of a queen bed, a double bed & 2 single beds made up with top quality bed linen, continental quilts and towels. In addition, they all have electric blankets for those cool winter nights. There is reverse cycle air conditioning for your comfort. The bathroom has shower & toilet. The laundry has a washing machine & dryer. In addition there is an outside shower & separate toilet. Both bathrooms have good hot water from a gas fired boiler. Tolka Cottage has colour TV, DVD & stereo/CD player, interesting books & games. Guest AccessYou are encouraged to walk around and enjoy the farm at Tolka. The Glenelg River (which flows through the adjacent Wilkin Floral Reserve) runs through the property, the beautiful river valley with its over hanging trees, provides dappled shade for great swimming, canoeing and wildlife watching. It is a lovely spot to enjoy a gourmet picnic hamper, made to order, full of local goodies put together by Ivy. The picnics consist of as much produce from Tolka and its immediate vicinity as possible, depending on tastes and on the season. The farm has a circular track, a mile long, through 60 acres of unspoilt bush, providing easy access to the flora and fauna of this area. Others may prefer to follow one of the many wild animal paths and do a bit of tracking and/or some foraging . There is always the chance of spotting a fallow deer. The Glenelg River provides suitable habitat for one of the most extraordinary creatures on earth - the platypus (an animal that lays eggs). Good time for viewing is around dusk. The Cottage has a dog proof garden and you are welcome to bring your dogs. We also have secure dog pens if you wish to avail of them. Food & water bowls can be provided, if required. Please supply a current vaccination certificate prior to arrival. The Cottage has an outdoor entertaining area with a gas barbeque and, in winter and outside fire restriction periods, guests may light fires for picnics on the property. If you wish to travel to Tolka with your horses, you are welcome to do so. There are horse paddocks, yards and stables all available at no extra cost, during your stay. If you wish to leave your horse here for some days before or afterwards: Horse agistment/boarding facilities can be provided for $15 per day in yards and $20 per day in stable. Horse health certificates for tetanus/strangles & worming must be current and supplied in advance of arrival. Interaction with GuestsOur house is near Tolka Cottage, but far enough away to be unobstrusive, so we are available if you need us. We are food mad and love our home grown produce. It is our philosophy that we should produce as much of our own food at home as possible. Guests may freely harvest their choice of vegetables from the garden for their own use and buy duck, geese and hen eggs when available and other homemade delights. Also, we usually have a large range of dried fruits and preserves for sale. If you are interested, you can learn how to catch yabbies (fresh water crayfish) for your supper in the dams. If you wish to find out more, just contact Ivy and she will be happy to help you. The NeighborhoodThis is a secret corner of Australia, undiscovered by mass tourism. A hidden delight for the connoisseur. It will suit those who are travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide, or those who are on the route to, or from, the Great Ocean Road and/or the Limestone Coast. The Cottage makes an ideal stop over, for a couple of nights, for a complete chill out. It provides a retreat for those who wish to enjoy the many festivals at Mt. Gambier and Coonawarra, but who want to have the freedom to escape from the crowds, at the same time. The farm with its wild areas, left unspoilt to encourage wildlife and its billabong will enrapture the unadventurous. Those who venture into the Wilkin Flora & Fauna Reserve which surrounds Tolka, will be treated to a botanical delight, rich in native wild flowers, orchids and fungi. The Casterton Horse Races take place several times a year and are a fun day out for the family and Tolka is ideally suited as a base for race goers, especially, if they wish to tap into Ivy's expert knowledge of the racing world. Tolka Cottage is always in demand for the Casterton Kelpie Festival each June. The Kelpie breed of dog originated in this area and is celebrated with the Kelpie Muster, the Festival and Working Dog Auction. So book early. There are several golf courses within easy reach: Casterton Golf Course, 15 minutes away, is the closest, followed by Coleraine Golf Club, 30 minutes away. There are two courses at Mt. Gambier, a 50 minute drive. Getting AroundThe best way to travel around this region is by car. Other Things to NoteTolka Cottage is adjacent to a beautiful billabong, sometimes full of water and sometimes dry depending on the weather. Kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and koalas are regularly seen on the farm. The area is a bird watchers paradise and over 140 species of birds have been seen on Tolka in recent years, including the spectacular endangered red tailed black cockatoo. You may fish on the Glenelg River that runs through Tolka. If you have children, be aware that there are dams, waterholes and billabongs (oxbow lakes), as well as a river, on this property.

The SpaceThe Old Mount Gambier Gaol opened as a functioning 'English Prison' in 1866 and closed it doors as a correctional facility in 1994. We have ample free parking directly out the front, which easily accommodates caravans or buses. We are happy to arrange free pick up or drop off for any of our guests to public transport depots within our business hours.

Close to the Glenelg River and the beach, Nelson Summerhouse is perched on top of a hill, with a birds eye view 180 degrees, to the Lower Glenelg National Park. Enjoy breakfast with Blue Wrens, then a picnic upstream with the Platypus (wicker picnic basket supplied!) and then BBQ your freshly caught fish (See Deano at the local General Store for great fishing tips, then hire a boat at Nelson Boat Hire) on the veranda with Possum magic happening before your very eyes. Snuggle into your very comfortable beds at nights, or quietly read one of the many books from the 'Summerhouse library' looking across the National Park as dusk falls.
