Our home has an illustrious history! Built in 1831 by Roland Curtin, an iron ore pioneer for his son James as part of Roland's business, Martha Furnace and Eagle Iron Works. Roland Curtin, original owner of our home is also the father of Andrew Gregg Curtin, Civil War Governor of Pennsylvania. The Curtin Family had an impact on Centre County, the founding of Penn State University, and you will see their name on streets and buildings in Bellefonte and State College. The Martha Furnace House was also owned by the Moses Thompson Family, who gave the original land which now comprises Penn State University. The Martha Furnace House is said to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad.
