Prince Albert is the home of the spectacular Swartberg Pass and gateway to the Great Karoo. Today the town has its own municipality and numbers over 13 000. It celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2012 and in that same year was voted the Western Cape winner in the prestigious kykNET KwĂŞla & Rapport 'Town of the Year' competition. The municipal district includes surrounding farms together with the towns of Klaarstroom, Prince Albert Road and Leeu-Gamka. Today's farmers have exchanged the nomadic existence of the past in favour of fencing in their livestock and growing crops. And in so doing wage a constant war against animal predators, drought and searing heat. Skrywerskop a delightful little self-catering cottage for two is the perfect place from which to explore the town and all it has to offer. From art galleries and restaurants, coffee shops and Theatre it has the cleanest dry air and the quietness of outer space. Take a break from the buzz, the traffic and the frustrations of city life. Finish reading or writing your book. Polish up your thesis without interruption in absolute peace and quiet. Give your creative talent free rein. At Skrywerskop you will get exactly what you want! A GEM OF A TOWN Just 5 km from the foot of the Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert is the perfect base for exploring all the wonders of the Swartberg (much of which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Take Gamkaskloof, Meiringspoort, the Cango Caves, Seweweekspoort or the Gamkapoort Dam for instance. Each are within an easy day's drive, getting you back in time for sundowners and spectacular Prince Albert sunsets. At 686 metres above sea level Prince Albert has a superb climate, with a high sunshine index, champagne air and spectacular night skies. So it's not surprising that hiking, mountain biking, fossil-walks, birding and botanical excursions are also major attractions. Other activities include guided walks through the town, a “koppie trailâ€? with almost 100 listed plants, stargazing, traditional Karoo meals and the excellent Fransie Pienaar Museum. And as if that's not enough to keep you here for days, you can also spend Saturday mornings at the Farmers' Market, visit local wine cellars and even buy award-winning cheese from our very own Guernsey dairy! Prince Albert has beautifully preserved Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian buildings 17 of which are Provincial Heritage Sites. It is well known for its sun-ripened fresh and dried fruit, especially figs and apricots. And Karoo lamb, olives, olive oil and handmade cheeses are all local specialities. There are also a number of popular events including an annual Olive Festival, biennial PArt festival, an Autumn School and a Leesfees. R & R is a Skrywerskop speciality. Evenings offer blazing sunsets amazing, aglow between "the sky-line's belting beryl and the wine-dark flats below". And incredibly clear nights that leave you feeling you can touch the stars. Skrywerskop is fully fenced so well-behaved small animals are welcome by prior arrangement.

The most frequent feedback we receive from guests are that "it is home from home" Do not think there is nothing to do simply because you are in a small rural village in the Great Karoo! Here are just some of the many activities in and around Prince Albert: Prince Albert is a small village located at the foot of the Swartberg pass making it the perfect base from which to explore Swartberg-mountain range, Gamkaskloof (die Hel) and Meiringspoort. The area is popular for hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching and botanical excursions. In Prince Albert Have an ethereal experience on the famous Ghost Walk as you roam with the ghosts of this historic village and hear their stories. Visit the Soet Karoo shop that specialises in Muscadel. Local villages produce this sweet dessert wine in the small vineyard behind their house in Kerkstraat. Eat out at the nearby Prickly Pear or experience authentic Karoo culinary fare at African Relish, where you can enjoy traditional favourites such as cinnamon cake with fresh cream, biltong and butternut soap or slow braised lamb. Cheese lovers should not miss a visit to Gay’s Dairy Farm. The farm produces delicious cheeses, dairy products and full cream milk. Cheese tasting and dairy tours by appointment. Savour the creativity of local inhabitants exhibiting their artwork at the Prince Albert Gallery. Enjoy a guided historical walk through the village. Scenic and Outdoor adventures Explore one of the hiking trails on Grootwaterval Farm on foot, bicycle or horseback. Go cycling or mountain biking in the scenic mountains of the Swartberg Pass. Drive to the top of the Swartberg Mountain Pass, then hike down with your picnic lunch and enjoy a cold beer when you reach the river. This area also offers great opportunities to view various bird species. Enjoy a game drive with tea or an evening drink and dinner at Weltevrede Fig Farm. Experience an early morning 2km guided nature walk on a farm near Prince Albert to see Lithops and other small succulents, birds and insects. Prince Albert is known for its spectacular night skies, so be sure not to miss an astral tour to view the celestial splendour of the Southern Hemisphere. Take a trip to the Swartrivier Olive Farm, Kreedouw Olive Farm or Prince Albert Olives - local family-run businesses to learn more about how they grow and process olives. Visit the Renu-Karoo veld restoration indigenous nursery 1.5km north of the village (near Swartrivier Olive Farm), open weekdays and by appointment during weekends. Day outings Visit some of the wine farms in the area such as Fernskloof (producing certified organic wines), Meiringspoort or Bergwater in the Prince Albert valley. Take the John's Donkey day trip over the Swartberg or hike over the mountains into ‘The Hell’ with an accredited tour guide. Visit Weltevrede Fig Farm to see how locals pick and dry Adams figs during the season that runs from January to May. The Karoo National Park is a worthwhile visit and is two hours' drive away. The SpaceThis house was built around 1900. We have tried to keep the features of the original house intact as far as possible, including timber strip floors, sash windows and shutters. The high ceilings lend an air of space. A very private splash pool (sitzbad) is ideal for cooling down during the very hot summer months and the vine covered back patio has a barbecue facility for al fresco dining. Guest AccessGuests have the use of the entire house and will not be sharing with strangers. There is secure off-street parking. A tiny, private pool off the back patio is ideal for relaxing during lazy, hot summer days. Please enquire about availability as the calendar is not always 100% up to date. Interaction with GuestsTrevor Dean will welcome you to Vine Cottage and will be able to provide information relevant to your stay. The NeighborhoodThe town of Prince Albert is 250 years old and as such there is a wide range of architectural styles visible. The best way of getting around in town is walking. There are a number of restaurants, a museum, art gallery, dairy and hotel as well as shops selling local products. Farms in and around the town produce wine and olive products as well as fruit in season. My favourite dessert wine comes from Soet Karoo, located opposite the hotel in Church Street. Don't miss the Saturday morning market next to the tourist office. Two attractions in the area are the Swartberg Pass and Meiringspoort. These are the two gateways to get south to Oudtshoorn. Both of these routes are well worth the drive, offering spectacular natural scenery. More adventurous guests can go to 'Die Hel' or Gamkaskloof which is a 4 hour drive from the top of the pass using a high-clearance vehicle only. Getting AroundThere are number of options to travel to Prince Albert: Drive from Cape Town in about 4 1/2 hours. Fly to George Airport and drive for 2 1/2 hours via Oudtshoorn. Drive from Johannesburg in about 12 hours. Other Things to NoteThe house has no television set. There is no wifi, but the town has good mobile reception and 3G roaming. There is also an internet cafe in the town.

The NeighborhoodThe town of Prince Albert is an oasis in the Great Karoo, where water from springs in the Swartberg mountains runs through the village in furrows, bringing gardens and orchards to life.     The first settlers arrived in 1762 and established a farm called Kweekvallei: Valley of Plenty. By 1845 a little village had sprung up, named after Queen Victoria's consort.   Tourism and farming drive our economy.  We boast the state of the art Showroom Theatre, an art gallery, photograph galleries, community craft outlets, a wonderful Museum, a mohair carpet weavery, several Olive farms and Gay's Dairy and Deli.   Our shops stock Cape Mohair products, metal work created by our local blacksmith, local olives, nuts and dried fruits and indigenous plants. The Saturday Market is a busy affair where you can enjoy coffee and pancakes and buy fresh produce, baked goods, health foods and white elephants!    Fresh fruit, including figs, apricots, nectarines and peaches are available in season. Karoo lamb can be bought at the local butchery. Four wine farms and wineries within a 25km radius of the town produce a selection of wines and port.   You can learn more about Prince Albert on the Red Bus Tour and enjoy a stroll with a storyteller through the streets in the evening on a Ghost Walk. Visit our farms, take a guided walk in the Wolwekraal Nature Reserve, enjoy holistic health treatments, take a yoga class, explore the night skies with an astronomer, go to the Thursday night film club... there are lots of things to do.   Our restaurants and coffee shops provide excellent cuisine at very reasonable prices, or you could spoil yourself and arrange for Pam to prepare a picnic basket or cook dinner for you at the Bay Leaf Guest House.   Prince Albert regularly holds festivals, including a Winter School organised by the Cultural Foundation, a Leesfees co-ordinated by the Writers' Guild, PArt - a feast of Art arranged by our local Art Gallery and an Agricultural Show.    A circular drive across the Swartberg Pass (with a visit to the Cango Caves) and back through Meiringspoort is a must, as is a trip along the Weltevrede road to watch the sunset, with your sundowners at hand. Getting AroundWalk to local restaurants, shops, the Showroom Theatre and Gay’s Dairy or take a ten minute stroll to the start of the Gordon's Koppie trail. Other Things to NoteThe cottage is serviced from Monday to Friday. This can also be arranged for weekends at an additional cost.
