The SpaceListen to the forest: that is all you will hear! The cabin is at the end of a private drive in the middle of fifteen acres of silent untouched forest. A huge maple tree is your closest neighbor. Ferns fill the valleys, old cedars crown the ridges. The house is light and airy, with vaulted ceilings, large windows and several skylights, hardwood, marble and tile floors, cool white walls and warm wood trim. The kitchen and bath are clean and well laid out, with propane gas cooking and electric water heating. There are thermostat controlled electric wall heaters in the living room, dining room, and bedroom, so you'll stay cozy warm. (The wood stove is unfortunately not available for use by guests.) Excellent water comes from a deep well. The bed is a double size organic cotton futon from Soaring Heart, on a low wood frame. The final 1/3 mile of private road is lightly graveled for all-weather access. The 1/2 mile before that is wide and well maintained gravel; and all other local roads you'll use are blacktop. Guest AccessFull bright kitchen, equipped for cooking all your meals: full gas stove cooktop and oven, coffee grinder and french press, toaster, blender, pots & pans, dishes & silverware. Dining room with bay window; large comfortable living room with picture window and skylights. French doors to west-facing outdoor deck. One bedroom with firm futon bed. One bathroom with tub/shower, skylight. Utility room with washer & dryer for your use. Stereo system with kitchen and living room speakers, CD player, iPod player, and access to our eclectic and extensive iTunes music library. Pretty dependable Verizon cell coverage (if you must); local-only land-line; no internet, no TV. Interaction with GuestsThe owners or a local host will meet you and give you your keys, show you around, and then come back to help you check out at the end of your stay. Someone nearby is always available by phone for questions or emergencies. The driveway has a locked security gate. The NeighborhoodThe forest is your neighborhood. Contiguous to this fifteen-acre forest property are very large tracts of empty timberland and tree farms. The lovely driveway is a perfect start for a long walk; then you'll find no end of logging roads -- some that open into amazing views of Hood Canal, Dabob Bay, and the Olympics. (We'll help you find those viewpoints!) The woods around the house are untracked: there are no trails for people in the 15 acres, but the driveway runs through the middle. (There are no mountain views from the house, and no beach access.) Getting AroundThe Edmonds ferry is about an hour away, as is Port Townsend; the closest grocery store or restaurant is about 45 minutes away in Quilcene or Chimacum. The esteemed Olympic Music Festival, running all summer, is only 14 miles away. Or the local Coyle Community Center has live music occasionally. Port Townsend is a wonderful destination for a day trip; beyond that are amazing hiking and wilderness areas, hot springs, beaches, a ferry to Victoria, lakes, and ocean shores. Nearby towns host farmers' markets, and there are several farm stands for organic local produce and eggs. Other Things to NoteFor those with sensitivity to fragrance, low or no odor cleaning supplies and laundry soap are used; the entire property is as chemical free as possible. We request guests to maintain these practices. Since this is a wild area, do not leave food or garbage outdoors or in your car! You may compost (vegan uncooked) onsite, and leave glass and metals for recycling, but take all other waste with you (otherwise a $25 disposal fee will be applied). There may be mosquitoes. WINTER ON THE COYLE: A winter retreat here is amazing! If you're lucky enough to get a snowfall, you'll see the forest transformed into a fantasy land most people only read about. The stillness gets even deeper. The rich life of the animal residents shows itself in their tracks; but besides them, you will be the first and only people to walk those snow covered paths. And winter can make life "on the Coyle" challenging: power outages are not uncommon, usually for minutes or hours, but potentially for days. Snowfall can sometimes be deep enough to test your driving ability, on the slope of the driveway or in icy patches on local blacktop roads. In really cold weather, the house stays cozy warm, but long hikes can leave you vulnerable to exposure. Here's what you need to know about winter in the cottage: In case of power outage (for more than a few minutes), call us or your local host. Use as little water as you can: the pressure tank holds a good supply, but the well pump won't replenish it, and the underground waste water holding tank won't pump out into the drain field, till the power comes back. The kitchen cooktop burners work fine (just light them with a match), but the oven can't be used. Of course, the electric wall heaters won't work, so the wood stove is your heat source -- and we're not using it, this season -- so when you get cold, it's time to either go to bed or drive to town; and if necessary, we will find you another place to stay until you can comfortably return to the house. (If you wish, you can monitor the outage at the local PUD website, for estimated duration.) In case of snow, be aware of your own snow driving skill as well as your car's snow-worthiness. Usually we recommend parking your car up at the end of the driveway on the gravel road, at the beginning of a snowfall, until it becomes clear how much snow you'll get. (Local micro-climates can cause snowfall amounts to be very different over short distances: so don't trust even a "local" forecast!) If you're coming to the cabin in the winter, bring warm clothes and good boots. We want you to be able to spend time outdoors and enveloped in nature, but in comfort and safety. Come! Sit in the rocker drinking hot chocolate. Watch the snow, listen to the rain. Stare out the window at life. Read something amazing, your book or ours. Listen to music you didn't know existed, or make music that astounds you. Dance! Or close your eyes and sit. Breath. Come home to the Coyle.

One entire wall of the cottage is glass with private views and a deck that wraps around three sides. There is an outside private and heated shower on the front deck. The cottage has cedar shingles and a metal roof, and is well insulated for heating and cooling. I have recently added a new fridge with freezer and microwave for my guests convenience. The home-cabin is also known as The Quilcene Bay Hideaway by our many regular guests. This is a one of a kind vacation rental with privacy, waterfront, breathtaking setting and view of the Olympic Mountains. The Quilcene Bay Hideaway is an enchanting three story chalet home with beautiful pine wood walls and ceilings. Each of the three floors has it's own bedroom and bathroom making it a great place for multiple people to spread out and have their own space. The master bedroom feels like a cool tree house-it has a queen size bed. The main floor bedroom has a queen size bed. The lower level bedroom has a double bed and a set of bunk beds too. We also have a playroom with another queen size bed and a hideabed so more guests can join in the fun. There is a large deck overlooking the pristine bay, many resident seals, wildlife, Mount Walker and National Forest land. You will feel miles away from it all in this somewhat 'untouched' area yet you are only four miles from the quaint town of Quilcene and a 30-40 minute drive to the booming area of Port Townsend. We have no end of things to do at The Quilcene Bay Hideaway. There really is something for everyone here. We have a hot tub built into our deck. Just step in and see what it is like to take in the great outdoors and fresh air. We have trails to walk, foosball, ping pong, and even a climbing net through the trees that is just too much fun and not just for kids. Do you love the water like our family? We rent kayaks to explore the pristine bay. Talk about getting a great view of seals, otters and wildlife. You can kayak across the bay to National Forest land and visit our families favorite cove-you can only get there by water. Our family swims in the bay during the summer months. We have a swim float dock that we swim out to and swim back for fun. At night we take a night walk. We have a long winding driveway up to a quiet country road-my kids and I have always brought our flashlights and go for our night walk. It's been our special way to end the day at The Hideaway for years. Our December guests get to enjoy a fully decorated cabin. It has been a 'highlight' for years.
