If I'd wish to have a great cultural and ecological experience while on vacation in the mountains, I'd certainly choose this home, for myself and my family. SPIRIT WIND RANCH sits in the midst of its own sanctuary: "Talahogan Sanctuary for Wild and Domestic Life", boasting a varied flora and fauna, amongst big Ponderosa and Alligator-juniper trees. Fantastic, colorful rock formations crown the peaceful surroundings, enticing for strolls in the meadows, and hikes up ridges offering breathtaking views of the valleys below. Archaeological Anazasi sites are found to enjoy as well, while walking around the property, and beyond. This ranch of 305 private acres, is located 2 miles away from the famed "Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary", a few more miles from the "El Morro National Monument", the "Ice Caves", the "El Malpais Park" with its "Caldera" (inactive volcano). There are two Native American communities (Navajo and Zuni) not too far away to go visit. In Zuni, you'll find traditional eateries and arts/crafts shops too. Around the El Morro Monument area, there are an art gallery, a trading post and two excellent restaurants. The cute Ramah village with its own museum and home-operated restaurant is also in the neighborhood. The house, perfect for couples and small families, sits on a hill surrounded by nature. From the sun-room, cozily resting on the couch after all the hiking and the visiting around, you may enjoy the wonderful sunsets New Mexico is righteously famous for. There is also a jacuzzi-tub in the en-suite bathroom of the master bedroom, with large windows allowing for a nice view of the surroundings while soaking in the bubbles. The birding is fantastic, right from inside the home, or from the verandah and deck. Elk regularly come through our pastures and go drink water and lick salt where the horses hang out near the windmill. There is an old windmill on the property. According to a local lore, legendary Billy the Kid built it to water his cattle he was keeping nicely hidden in the whereabouts. "Land of Enchantment" is New Mexico's official description (it's written also on license-plates...), and surely this location lives up to it. The surroundings present a flowing, peaceful experience, its energy conducive to meditative and health-connected momentum. The neighborhood is also quiet and safe. There are a couple trading posts, 2 stores, 3 gas-stations in the area, easily accessible by car at all times. It is advisable to rent your own car at Albuquerque's airport. A 1 hour-drive on I-40 will take you to Grants, and from there 1 more hour of a pleasurable drive on scenic hwy 53 south will take you to an intersection with BIA route # 125 through the small village of Mountain-View and to the "Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary" (off Route # 120). Two more miles (on 5-Gate Road), and you'll arrive at "Talahogan Sanctuary" and at "your home in the wilderness SPIRIT WIND RANCH". Our property has private parking.

The SpaceUp the steps and around the stairwell are our three guest rooms. Room 6 is beautiful - overlooking the campus with windows to the north and west - for great sunsets. The double bed is outfitted with a feather tick! The room also has a small twin. The closet has a hanging shelves for your clothes. Lovely, warm and private. Guest AccessThis is the Good Shepherd Mission, home of the first hospital on the Navajo Nation. Gardens, playground and the Hummingbird Cafe are steps away, as well as our historic Episcopal church, built in the Pueblo style from native pink canyon stone. Interaction with GuestsOur campus can be lively with folks coming and going, the Hummingbird Cafe pouring out good coffee, with sweet rolls, blue corn cookies and usually a terrific lunch soup or something. Workmen around as we continually are restoring our historic buildings, and our great staff in and out too. Morning Prayer at 9 Tues-Fri, Navajo language (plus Evening Prayer) on Wednesdays at 5:30, Holy Eucharist on Sundays at 10:30, Several of us live on campus so there is someone around 24/7. Getting AroundWe are centrally located as a good starting point for several attractions: Canyon de Chelly is an hour, Chaco Canyon the same, Petrified Forest 1 hour, Gallup 30 minutes, Farmington 2 hours, Flagstaff 2 1/2 hours. The Navajo Nation offers limited bus service around the Reservation, and there is a pick-up at the post office near us. Highway 12 goes south to 1-40 and north toward Shiprock and Farmington, as well as Tsaile and othr northern parts of the Reservation, and onto the beautiful Monument Valley. Other Things to NoteOur Mission is 120 years old. Cobblestones, desert cactus, old sidewalks, unique floor plans and buildings that creak from years of use. This is not a four-star hotel but a lovely old building with personality. Shared bath and kitchen, a cleaning crew that gets it right most of the time (but not always), we offer affordable housing in a place with little or no accommodations available. Food choices are limited in Fort Defiance. We have a cute coffee shop/cafe (The Hummingbird) open weekday mornings through lunch. One decent fast food hamburger joint, a gas station and a 7-11. The hospital offers sandwiches at lunch. Restaurants available in Window Rock 7 miles away. We have some limited space for you to keep food (and refrigeration). Best to bring some food with you. Please remember you are on the Reservation and things may not be like you have them back home. Internet doesn't always work, we don't have air conditioning (usually don't need it) and the place is 130 years old. The old wooden floors may get refinished at some time in the future, but we do our best with a very limited budget and staff to offer safe and affordable, and usually, sweet surroundings for your stay.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places the El Rancho Hotel located on Route 66 is the embodiment of Americas Old West and one of the must visit hotels in the United States. When you stay at the El Rancho Hotel you will be sleeping in a room where a movie star slept. But the hotel is not just about movie stars. When you stay at the El Rancho you will be following in the footsteps of Americans who have traveled West in hopes of a better life. Route 66 is the road most traveled by dreamers looking for a better life and the El Rancho is one of the cornerstones of that Westward Journey. According to author Russell A. Olsen As you enter the historic El Rancho through the stately front entry you immediately realize this was and still is a special place. During its heyday the El Rancho Hotel was one of the premier hotels in the entire Southwest and became the place for the Hollywood set to stay when filming in the area. During its glory years the El Rancho was the definition of luxury and included many amenities that were lacking in other typical tourist hotels of the day. For 50 years the El Rancho Hotel greeted guests along Route 66 with class and dignity. Luckily for us this one of a kind hotel once again greets guests with open arms and enjoys the renewed worldwide interest in Route 66 and its landmarks. But perhaps the most important experience of all is yours. When you stay at the El Rancho Hotel you will be giving yourself the opportunity to live your own Southwest experience in one of the most authentic places in the Region. You will give yourself the chance to explore unforgettable National Parks and feel the American Spirit. You will give yourself the chance to discover churches that date back to the Conquistadors or the chance to sit on a Mesa far from the rest of the world overlooking a picture perfect sunset on your own journey.
