Heron Point is a large, two-story open plan house sited on a very private 2.5 acre point facing the Chesapeake Bay near the beautiful and historic town of Reedville, VA. A perfect place to experience life on the Northern Neck. This house offers all the modern conveniences you expect, with water views from every room. The property is kept as a mini-preserve, with native trees, plants and grasses edging the 1,100 feet of shoreline to support the local wildlife. The house is designed for extended family and friends to spend time together; the bedrooms are large enough for private escape time when desired. The main level has a Master Bedroom suite, a sitting room, a multi-windowed great room, a kitchen outfitted for cooking with a breakfast area, a separate dining room that can seat 10, a powder room (1/2 bath), and a mudroom and laundry with front load washer and dryer. The great room is the central gathering place of the house. Two sofas, a chair and ottoman, and floor cushions surround the fireplace and flat screen TV with surround sound. Windows all around provide views of the water and diverse bird life. A pass-through window from the kitchen keeps everyone connected during meal prep. Sliding doors lead to the expansive Trex deck with Adirondack chairs and tables. Gentle morning sun warms the deck - which becomes shaded by early afternoon for late day reading, napping or sipping cocktails while ship and osprey watching! The kitchen provides a large refrigerator, microwave oven, double ovens (with one convection), rangetop, and dishwasher. There is counter seating along with a table to seat 6. Adjacent to the kitchen is a full dining room that provides a table that extends to seat 10. There are two large master suites, with two additional bedrooms which share a bath. The spacious main floor master suite is great for senior visitors or those with mobility challenges on stairs. All doorways on this floor are 3 feet wide to accommodate walkers. The suite holds a King size bed as well as a couch and chair. A DVD player provides private entertainment. The bathroom offers double sinks, a step-in shower and a soaking tub. Upstairs, the second master suite has a King size bed, sitting chair and TV with cable The attached private bathroom has double sinks and a tub/shower. This suite has direct access to the upper screened porch for morning coffee or evening nightcaps. There are two porches on this floor. The front porch grants a view of the entry drive and sunset; the screened rear porch overlooks the inlet and the Bay. A fan provides a cooling breeze - perfect for reading, knitting, or daydreaming! The two additional bedrooms share a bathroom with double sinks, a tub/shower and dressing nook. One bedroom offers three twin beds. The second bedroom has a Queen bed. Both rooms have wonderful views of the side inlet. A wide landing on the second floor provides play space for the kids. Heron Point has a private dock which is great for fishing or crabbing...or just sunning and watching the water. Jetskis or skiffs can be launched from the community dock one lot away and tied up for the stay at our private dock. (Shallow water access only). A trail on the lee side of the property leads to the launch area for the canoe and 4 kayaks to explore the inlet and the bay. Several bicycles in an assortment of sizes are provided for cruising the neighborhood and making a quick run to the beach! A private, white sand community beach with picnic tables is located around the corner. The beach is a gentle slope with shallow water extending several hundred feet. This is perfect for kids to play for hours, and gets deep enough for a good swim. (We don't recommend swimming in the inlet waters at the house due to potential bottom hazards). Attractions in the Reedville area include the Reedville Fisherman’s Museum; the Northern Neck Farm Museum; Hughlett Point Nature Preserve, and ferries for day trips across the Bay to Tangier and Smith Islands (each great one-day adventures). We provide “Heron Point Coupons” for discounts at select local stores, eateries and activities. The Northern Neck of Virginia is an evolving wine region with several vineyards within easy driving distance of Heron Point. The communications infrastructure at Heron Point has been upgraded to cable service which provides better and consistent high speed internet access and cable TV service. A very private setting in a waterfront neighborhood on Virginia'a Northern Neck. This area offers a variety of historical sites to visit (Tangier and Smith Islands by Cruises, George Washington's Birthplace, Reedville Fisherman's Museum, among many others). Things to do: We recommend that you pick up a free copy of ‘The Rivah’ paper at a local gas station or shop on your way to the house. This paper contains many more sites to visit, places to hike, sport and boat rentals, cultural activities, and special events for the season from April to October. You can also plan ahead with their online version at http://www.ssentinel.com/index.php/rivah/ History Close-by: The town of Reedville has a long history. Elijah W. Reed, a New England ship captain, established the town in 1874 after building a factory here to process menhaden, a small bony fish rich in oil. (These fish are still caught and processed for Omega Fish Oil at a modern plant). Reedville soon became the center of the industry and home port to the Atlantic menhaden fleet. By the early 20th century the town, which resembled a New England fishing village, reputedly had one of the highest per capita incomes in the country. Its historic district contains early fishermen’s houses and Victorian mansions. The oldest dwelling is the Walker House (1875). At 504 Main Street, you will find the Reedville Fisherman’s Museum. Indoor displays and actual moored boats make up the experience. The website for the museum is http://rfmuseum.org/ Small admission fee. The Northern Neck Farm Museum is located in Northumberland County at 12705 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville VA 22473. The museum shows visitors the story of the Northern Neck farmer and engages them in understanding the many contributions that the unique lifestyle of agriculture has contributed to the nation. Browse the website at: thefarmmuseum.org The museum is open on Saturdays from 10 to 2 and Sundays from 1 to 4, from April 30 through October. Small admission fee. The Northumberland Heritage Trail is a scenic byway from the Reedville Historic District to the Heathsville Historic District. This follows back roads along the Potomac and its tributaries. It crosses the Little Wicomico River via the Sunnybank Ferry. For several decades, it carried workers to the Reedville menhaden industry. You can drive or bike these roads. Dining Out: There is a good selection of restaurants within 25 miles of Heron Point. We frequent Tommy’s - Main Street, Reedville Town Bistro – Kilmarnock Newsomes Restaurant – Burgess Trip Advisor has ratings for other dining locations as well.

The SpaceWe can rent just one room for two people if needed and the cost will be significantly lower; but we will be in the house at the same time. Just contact me for details. For the entire home: read on! One of the earliest homes in the area, Edgehill boasts original pine flooring, restored English basement with brick floors and gourmet kitchen, original plaster and architectural details in central hall and stairway, under-floor heating in all rooms, central air conditioning, and unique architectural details, and beautiful river views from every room in the house. Our family has traveled all over the world and thus our home contains some unusual collections. I am a designer and antiques dealer, so the home is furnished with unique antiques, artwork, and eclectic furniture. The home is traditionally one room deep, and therefore is spread over four levels. The kitchen, full bathroom with jetted tub and shower, and laundry room are on the ground (first) floor with an office, half bath and lounge/dining room on the second , and bedrooms and bathrooms on the third and fourth floors. The bathroom on the third floor is full, while the top floor bathroom is a half bath. The "penthouse," as we like to call it, is perfect for kids as the bedrooms are located in the eaves of the house, making the rooms cozy. The ceiling height in the penthouse is approximately 6 ft 3" so if you are tall, watch your head in the penthouse. The office, on the second floor, has a sofa which pulls out to a double bed. We make up this bed with a fiber bed mattress topper to increase the comfort. If you chose to use this room as a bedroom, you have an en suite half bath with antique pedestal sink and toilet. On the third floor you will find a large landing with glass doors and balcony porch and two bedrooms with one full bathroom (with a loo with a view!) One bedroom has queen size bed, the other bedroom is slightly smaller has an antique Javanese wedding bed which hold a double sized mattress. These two bedrooms share the full bath on this level. On the fourth floor, you will find two bedrooms with single beds and one half bath. An additional air mattress can be put up in one of these rooms if necessary and prearranged. There is an additional cost for the 9th guest of $35.00 per night. Guest AccessProperty includes in-ground custom 50 ft pool (saltwater), large yard, soccer goal, waterfront access with private beach and dock, 2 kayaks, outdoor dining under pergola, porches, herb garden, vegetable garden, fire pit, carport, grill, laundry, and piano. Note: this house is four floors. Guests need to know that there are many stairs and no elevator. Interaction with GuestsWe'd love to help your trip be the best it can be. We will recommend restaurants, hikes, kayak trips, or the best crab bait. However, we will not be in the house at the same time as you unless you are only renting one room. The NeighborhoodThis house is equidistant (9 miles) from Kilmarnock and Reedville, two quaint, friendly Northern Neck towns. Kilmarnock is full of cute local shops and Reedville boasts historic houses, two waterfront restaurants, and a classic ice cream parlor. Irvington and White Stone are only a few miles from Kilmarnock and also offer plenty of local color, shops, cafes and a winery. We are next door to Athena Vineyards, a great place to walk and sample lovely local wines. A mile by kayak down the river is a great waterfront restaurant. Hughlett Point Nature Preserve is a 10-15 minute drive away and is a beautiful spot along the Chesapeake Bay for hikes, a picnic or a swim. Local festivals, parades and shows are sprinkled throughout the year and Edgehill is a great place to celebrate holidays. If you have any specific requests like fresh flowers or local Great Wicomico River Oysters, please feel free to ask and we will do our best to accommodate you. We are 70 miles from Colonial Williamsburg, 75 miles from Richmond, 80 miles from Virginia Beach, and 140 miles from Washington DC. The closest airport is in Newport News/Williamsburg International (Prince Henry Field) and is 60 miles or an hour and 10 minutes away. Alternatively, Richmond International Airport is a 70 mile journey. Getting AroundBay Transit is a local shuttle service which operates in the area. They can be reached at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). During the summer months, a Trolley operates around the Kilmarnock, White Stone, and Irvington area. Other Things to NoteWhile all of the rooms are heated and air conditioned, the manner in which the house was restored makes it such that the central hall and stairway is not heated or air conditioned. Also, the top floor is not tied into the central air conditioning and thus window units cool the rooms easily in the summer. The grounds include the original cemetery from the early 1800s, which is a serene place to read, relax, or take in the river views as we have transformed it into a formal sitting area and garden with fire pit. The pool, while not heated, is open year round! I swim through October and start swimming again in April. Polar plunging is allowed! If you are interested in just renting one room for two people, this can be arranged but we will be in the house at the same time. Just contact me for details. We have a cat who lives outside full time. We do not put him in a kennel when we are away as I think he would go mad having never been contained like that; so we hope you won't mind seeing a friendly black cat strutting around the property. His house is in the carport as well as his feeding station. Please do not let him in the house. Please refrain from using glasses or glass bottles around and in the pool. We are requiring guests to sign a waiver upon their arrival. This waiver basically states that you swim at your own risk and releases us from any liability in regards to the property, the pool, the dock and the river.

Come down to the 'RIVAH!' The Northern Neck Peninsular is an area in south-eastern Virginia with coast lines on the the mighty Potomac river, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Rappahannock river. This region of Virginia was peopled by several American-Indian peoples, was colonized by the English in 1607 and has been a major part of US history since. The coastal areas are referred to by the locals as the, "Rivah". Obviously derived from the word, River, rivah doesn't just describe a waterway. Rivah is used in everyday speech to describe the region - rivah country, its way of life - 'rivah time', its cuisine - rivah food, and it's wonderful residents - rivah folk. Rivah is synonymous with fun and relaxation on the water with good local food and drink in good company in a beautiful part of the world. Boating, kayaking, sailing, fishing, and crabbing are the local past-times.

Interaction with GuestsWe as hosts are as available to you from the day you reserve your stay to the time you check out. Our mission is to help make your vacation / holiday a great one! With that in mind we will do everything we can to make you comfortable and at home in your place by the river. The NeighborhoodDowntown Reedville is small town Americana with streets and houses right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. You will be surrounded by hundreds of square miles of navigable water ways as well as the majestic Chesapeake Bay that provides fantastic boating, sailing, jet skiing and water skiing. The fishing is fantastic all year round whether you want to charter a boat and crew to fish the bay for Rockfish and Blues, or you just want to fish the many rivers, creeks and coves...or just off our dock for that matter. As well as fishing off the dock, there is nothing like baiting our crab traps, dropping and tying the traps off the end of our dock in the morning and pulling them in around 5pm and broiling the blue crabs up for a rustic crab feast at the picnic table with a favorite beverage. Getting AroundThe house is in a rural area and is quite secluded so you will need a car. There is plenty of parking available on our drive way. The house has several bicycles for guest use. Other Things to NoteWhether it's boating, fishing, crabbing, BBQing, eating out on the screened porch, sipping margaritas or mohitos on the sun splashed deck, napping in an outside hammock, exerting yourselves with a game of horse shoes, walks in the private woods, or simply sitting on the dock with a steaming cup of Joe watching the mist on the river as the sun comes up, or just curling up in a comfy chair with a good book from the house library, this vacation home is for you! It's secluded yet close enough to walk or drive to everything we need when we are there. We love the beauty and history of Reedville and surrounding area. The woods on our 7+ acre lot is home to many woodland creatures such as deer, foxes, rabbits, wild turkeys. The sky is the domain of not only owls, buzzards, hawks and birds you expect to see in rural Virginia, there are also ospreys, storks, grebes, pelicans and all manner of sea birds, and it is not uncommon to see majestic bald eagles (there are upwards of 30 pairs living in the area) patrolling and competing with ospreys for the fish in our cove. And at night we can look up and be enthralled to see countless stars on a pitch black sky with the night sounds of the surrounding woods as a sound track.

The SpaceComfortable, unpretentious and FUN. Sandy feet are welcome here! Ideal beach for small children- jetties provide breaks in current and waves. Home has window unit AC's and is super comfortable even during the hottest of summers. Two twin beds are in the center bedroom, right off the kitchen, then there is a bunk bed with it's own tiny 1/2 bath. At the end of the hall is the main bedroom with a full size bed and the main bathroom (tub, shower, sink, toilet). You will have to walk through the main bedroom to use the main bath, or else use the small 1/2 bath in the bunk bed room. "Flood Gauge" is fun and eclectic. Don't expect it to be featured in Architectural Digest! The outdoor shower is HUGE and fabulous after a hot day at the beach. This place is ALL about being outside-on the beach, exploring the Northern Neck, cooking out, biking, boating, etc...! Cell service is ok as long as you have Verizon and don't mind taking calls on the front deck. Other carries don't have very strong signals (if any). The WiFi generally works great for me (I have worked there a lot over previous summers), but it is honestly nothing close to FIOS. The charm of coming out here is connecting with each other over conversation and outings- not technology. So if the WiFi is down when you're here, I'll do my best to get it going again, but no promises! :) Special note- the main bedroom and bath are the only rooms with solid doors. We took out the other doors to provide great airflow (but don't worry, there ARE privacy curtains to separate bedrooms and the 1/2 bath). Guest AccessYou'll have full access to our golf cart, the private, white sand, neighborhood beach, home, large yard, charcoal grill, shed (includes beach chairs, beach umbrella, rafts & bikes) and outdoor shower. You will have PRIVACY and the freedom to enjoy the property, since I do not live there. All you really need to bring are groceries, flip flops and a bathing suit! Neighborhood also has a shallow boat launch for sea kayaks or skiffs. Main public launch is just 1 mile down the road, towards Fleeton Point. We also keep 2 Canoes at the Great Wicomico River Marina, near our home, for guest use on the river (only) for no extra cost! See me for the keys, life jackets and paddles. Interaction with GuestsWe live 6 miles away in Burgess, so I am able to assist with most requests. If you rent the home for a week or more, I'll come over every Wednesday and provide clean towels (sheets ONLY if requested). There is not a dishwasher or clothes washer. There is a large drying rack in the yard for wet towels/ bathing suits. The NeighborhoodThis rental comes with access to a PRIVATE, white sand, neighborhood beach! We've owned "Flood Gauge" since 2009, when our son was 10, after coming to the neighborhood for many years (as guests) in our motor home. We fell in love with the location and the neighbors. It's a relaxed community that has bands play on summer weekends down at the beach, has cookouts, bingo nights at the clubhouse and pancake breakfast socials. Great people! Owning this home made us realize how much we wanted to live in the Northern Neck of VA year round, so now we do. Getting AroundBring a boat, jet ski or kayak-see it ALL by water. There are three bikes in the shed for guest use (one adult female, one adult male and a preteen/teen size). Easy car ride to Historic Reedville (1 mile), or easy drive to Kilmarnock, White Stone or Irvington for shopping and sightseeing! Come up and enjoy the Northern Neck of VA without spending all your money on lodging. This home is in the country-closest true town is Kilmarnock, a 20 minute drive. Don't expect pizza delivery or a "quick run" to the store-DO expect lazy quiet days sitting on the beach, or planned day trips to Tangier Island (a MUST), Williamsburg, George Washington's birthplace, Jamestown or Yorktown, to name a few. Other Things to NoteThe home is a redone 1986 mobile home with a stick built great room addition. We spent a year painting the interior so now it truly does look and feel like a mobile cottage. It is relaxed old school summertime beach living! *NOTE, all new reservations INCLUDE the use of the golf cart. It does make getting kids and gear to the beach soooo easy. **The house has a 30 AMP hookup outside for a motor home/ camper! Also, exterior water hook up. Got friends who want to come with you in their camper; they CAN!

Capt. Fisher, made rich by the turn-of-the-century menhaden fishery, aligned the roof of the five-story mansion along his compass. He erected the wooden mast of his beloved schooner, the “John B. Adams” that sailed the Atlantic, through the top two stories, and stacked the 10-inch walls of brick brought south from Baltimore. Building the Gables took eight years because what was built one day, Capt. Fisher was likely to have torn down and rebuilt the next. A local historian, Miriam Haynie writes, “Finally, it was finished and stood in all its gabled Queen Anne glory — with a fountain in front, a coach house on the side and a handsome wrought-iron fence to enclose it all.” The Fishers moved into their new home in 1914.
