Welcome to Double Eagle Lodge located remotely in the heart of Michigan’s pristine Upper Peninsula. Escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life with a trip into the great outdoors. No cellphone reception or Internet connection allows you to relax in the quite of nature. This quaint log cabin is located on the shores of Long Lake. Though the lodge is 13 miles from the nearest electricity source, the solar panels and back up generator charge the battery bank to give the comforts of home while preserving the quiet surroundings. This log cabin sleeps six total, with four single beds in the loft and a queen size bed in the private bedroom downstairs. The cabin is equipped with indoor plumbing including a flush toilet and a shower, as well as a fully functioning kitchen. There is a separate building for the propane fired sauna and a second shower. With the exception of the owner’s cabin there are no other cabins on the lake. Long lake has excellent fishing with Walleye, Bass, Perch and Northern Pike, which are the most predominant fish. If one is quiet, there are plenty of wildlife to catch a glimpse of such as moose, deer, bear, wolves, coyote, beaver, otter and many birds – including bald eagles nesting nearby. If you enjoy kayaking or canoeing, one can paddle up and downstream until beaver dams are reached. Included in the rental is the use of 2 kayaks, a paddleboat and a row boat. One can hike, mountain bike, swim, snowshoe, and snowmobile all day and may not see another human. The location is relatively close to the snowmobile trials. Finally, at the end of the day everyone can relax sitting around the fire pit watching the sunset and roasting smores. Once the fire dies down the night is truly dark with no influence of city lights. The stars are incredibly clear and bright!

The SpaceThe cabin was designed and hand built with a "cave theme" to go along with large cave-like rock formation adjacent to the property. The open interior space, large hand-scribed red pine logs with arched entryways, knotty pine trim, exposed granite formation in the basement bathroom, and beautiful views of the water and woods make this cabin a special retreat that is both rustic and elegant. Walking up the stairs to the main arched entrance, there is a covered entryway with space for outdoors gear you want to keep outside but undercover--coolers, gear bags, sporting equipment etc. The main arched entrance brings you into the large "foyer" area which connects the rear patio door, the "Solarium", and the Great Room. The Solarium is the rec-room, so named because of all the windows which provide for natural light and great natural views. There are 2 couches, a tournament Tornado foosball table, a flatscreen TV with DVD and cable for rainy days, and plenty of toys/games for kids or adults. The patio door opens to the back of the cabin overlooking the Michigamme river. Take a walk along the backside of the cabin for a unique view of the waterfront. A more finished patio area is in the works for next year. The Great Room area includes the living, dining, and kitchen areas into one large open space. There are comfy couches in front of the large windows overlooking the woods and waterfront. The dining room table seats 6 comfortably with additional room at the kitchen island. Modern appliances include a full refrigerator/freezer, propane range/oven, 4-man toaster, coffeemaker and grinder (for those fresh beans!), and stainless pots/pans for the chef in the family. A full dishwasher means more time at the bonfire and less time cleaning up. An old antique wood cook stove is fully functional and perfect for keeping hot water or soup on hand. Installation of a wood burning fireplace is in the works for 2016. The master bedroom has a cedar-log framed queen bed and dresser, with adjacent master bath (including shower). There is also a covered patio area off of the master bedroom that overlooks the river and is a perfect spot for watching the sunset or last embers of the bonfire. Heading downstairs, there is a mud area that is perfect for staging and drying all of the days adventure gear and a 2nd Bedroom that has a nice view of the river. The Adventure Room is an extension of the mud area and has plenty of room for staging of gear and clothing. There is a utility room with a deep sink and a full washer and dryer for laundry needs. The Bunk Room is a good sized space with a total of (3) cedar log bunks (2 full, 1 twin) and (2) closets with dressers for storage. The Basement Bathroom is adjacent to the bunk room and is a unique room in itself, as it was built partially into the granite rock foundation--to keep with the cave theme! The bathroom also has a whirlpool jet tub and a large open shower area. Because the granite rocks keep cool year round, it can get very "foggy" in this room when the hot tub or shower is running which makes for a very relaxing experience. Headed outside, there is a large firepit for year-round bonfires, and a woodfired Finnish Sauna. The Sauna fits 4-5 people comfortably and has a gowning area with a mini-fridge for refreshments. There is a short path from the Sauna deck down to the water to enjoy the true Sauna experience! Another unique feature of the property is there are numerous chainsaw-carved "critters" dotted along the roadway and in various locations that were created by the original builder/owner. In floor radiant heating keeps the cabin warm in the chilly winter months. With (7) total heating zones, the individual room temperatures can be adjusted to each person's preference. Guest AccessGuests have access to the full cabin, wood-fired Finnish sauna and deck near the shore of the river, over 400' of river frontage with both a dock and raft for swimming, and 5 acres of wooded and very rocky terrain to explore. There are several soft camping chairs available for use at the bonfire, sauna deck, or the covered porch. There are (4) Kayaks with life preservers available for use -- the Michigamme River Basin is perfect for taking in wildlife or fishing while kayaking. Interaction with GuestsOur intent is to get you everything you might need to get started (firewood, charcoal, cooking essentials, maybe a local seasonal culinary treat or two). Whenever possible, I would like to meet in person initially to turn over the keys and walk thru some of the features of the home and property. After that, the intent is to leave you alone to enjoy the cabin and create your own UP memories. For guests with specific requests for local food, drink, activities, etc. we can try and accommodate as best as possible. The Northern Wisconsin and UP areas are well known for their smoked meats, cheeses, and fish, as well as exceptional craft breweries and wineries in the area. We are available by cell phone/text at all times and are within a 2.5 hr drive in case onsite support is needed. The NeighborhoodThe cabin sits nestled on the elevated and wooded shoreline of the Michigamme River, specifically, "The Basin" which is basically a wide/deep spot in the river and perfect for boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, hanging out at the Republic Public Beach in summer, or ripping shots on the home-made pond hockey rink in winter. The cabin is easy to access--it's close enough to civilization for convenience but secluded enough to make you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. The recreational activites in the area are plentiful from snowmobiling and ATV'ing year-round to exploring the Iron Ore Heritage Trail which starts in downtown Republic. There are top notch brewpubs and restaurants in Ishpeming (Cognition Brewing!) and Marquette (Vierling Restaurant). Iron Mountain has an awesome authentic Italian deli (Crispignia's). There is a small bait and tackle shop in Champion (about 15 min drive) for fishing needs. There is a True Value hardware store in South Republic (5 min to the south) that has any essential you can think of. Getting AroundA vehicle is needed to access the cabin off of the main highway--preferrably a 4x4 or AWD in the winter months. The cabin is about 1/3 mile off of M95 on a hilly/rocky/winding road. The cabin is halfway between Iron Mountain and Marquette, 2.5 hours from Green Bay, WI, and about 3.5 hours from the Mackinaw bridge. Republic has a convenience store for necessities within a few minutes drive. The next closest town of any size is Ishpeming and is approx 20 min away for a larger selection of restaurants, groceries, or supplies. Marquette is approx 45 min away for an even larger array of food, entertainment, outdoors, and cultural events/activities. Other Things to NoteThe mosquitos can be pesky in the late Spring and Summer months--don't forget your bug spray! The tapwater at the cabin is very clean and tastes great due to the depth of the well, however, using too much water too quickly will result in lower water pressure which takes a few hours to replenish. For larger groups, we have found that there

SUNSET HOUSE SLEEPS: 8 comfortably BEDROOMS: 3 BATHROOMS: 1.5 *LAKEFRONT *SAUNA *SCREENED IN PORCH The Sunset Lake Cottage has a beautiful view along the quiet Mud Lake, just outside of Republic, Michigan. Mud Lake is connected to Horseshoe Lake with a shallow channel. Very secluded and quiet. Mud Lake is mostly a sandy bottom beach, yet it is rocky in some parts. It is sandy around the dock where you go into the water. Please be aware it does drop to 4 ft. pretty quickly, so it isn't friendly for very young children. Its depth ranges between 10-15 feet deep, with a few spots at 20 feet. Great for fishing, privacy, and relaxation. May and June are the prime fishing time. The cottage has three-bedrooms with gorgeous views throughout. Windows surround the cabin, which makes you feel connected to nature. The Sunset Lake Cottage provides a very spacious and comfortable area, both inside and out, with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy. The screened in porch is a great feature. We even have a sauna where up to 8 people can enjoy! 3 kayaks, a rowboat and a paddle boat are included during your stay. Fun for all. Mud Lake is strictly a people-powered lake, no jet skis or water skiing allowed. You write your own script while you are here. There is satellite TV in the cabin, so there is some connection to the outside world. Cell service is still spotty in the Upper Peninsula. Internet service is being installed April 2016! Bed Organization: Downstairs: 2 Queen beds (2 beds total) Downstairs: Bunk beds: 1 full with a twin on top + 1 twin bed (3 beds total) Bunkhouse (outside the main house- ideal for teenagers): 1 Queen bed + 2 twin beds (3 beds total) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Privacy: No close neighbors, though you can see the neighbors across the lake. Air-Conditioner: - No-We do not have air conditioning. Beach: While we don't have a traditional sandy beach, enjoy swimming out to the swim raft off the dock. The bottom of the lake is sandy around the dock where you go in the water. Please be aware it does drop to 4 ft. pretty quickly, so it isn't friendly for very young children. It's depth ranges between 10-15 feet deep, with a few spots at 20 feet. Boats: 3 kayaks, rowboat, paddle boat are included for you to use during your stay. Cell/Mobile Service: Cell service is spotty in the Upper Peninsula. Still, we have found that Sprint seems to provide the best service in the area. AT&T has been pretty good as well. Coffee Pot: Yes, we have a coffee pot at the cabin. At times there is coffee available, yet we highly recommend that you bring your own. We do not inventory the coffee. Fishing poles: Please bring your own fishing poles. Grill: Propane grill is provided. Grocery Store: Where is the closest grocery store? The closest, full-sized grocery store is about a 1/2 hour drive from the cabin, Ishpeming. It is the IGA Jubilee right on U.S 41. If you are driving from Wisconsin/Chicago, the last grocery store is in Iron Mountain. There is a little hardware/ convenience store in the town of Republic, about 15 minutes from the cabin, yet there isn't a large selection, and the prices are convenience-store equivalent. There is a larger convenience store/BP Gas station on the corner of U.S. 41 and MI-95, about 20 minutes North of the cabin. Heating source: Not only do we have the wood-burning fire place, yet we do have electric heat if you just need to get the chill out of the air. Linens: Yes, bed linens are provided. There is a washer/dryer at the cabin, that you can use if you would like to wash your linens during your stay. Kitchen Supplies: The basic kitchen supplies are at the cabin. Basic dishes, pots/pans, glasses, cups, etc. are provided, including basic kitchen spices. We also have a microwave, toaster, KitchenAid Mixer. blender and Pizzazz Pizza Maker. Still, we do not inventory these items, so if there is something particular you would like, we highly recommend bringing it. Pets: Pets are welcome. We love animals… but cats do not love us. Allergies require us to say NO CATS. Two well-trained dogs are fine but the house is surrounded by forest with some natural predators, so supervision is also recommended. TV: We have cable TV in the living room. Washer & dryer: Yes-you may use during your stay. Woodstove: Yes, we have a wood stove at the property. Please bring your own wood. You can find a lot of scraps around the hills of the property. Distances from: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: is 109 miles away ~ 2 hours and 22 minutes. Tahquamenon Falls State Park: is 177 miles away ~ 3 hours and 22 minutes. Mackinac Bridge: is 215 miles away~4 hours. REPUBLIC ISLAND SLEEPS: 4 BEDROOMS: 1 small + 2 tiny (where only a full sized bed can fit comfortably) BATHROOMS: 1 (shower only, no tub, with heated floors) *ON RIVER *WATER ACCESS ONLY (hence the word island!) *EXCELLENT FOR FISHERMEN NEW IN 2016: Screened in porch, Satellite TV + all new outdoor furniture, lounge chairs and tables. Escape the ordinary vacation. Relax or be adventurous. Fish your heart out! Take a break from technology. This historic (1800's), 3 bedroom, cedar log cabin is nestled within a 2 acre rustic private island on the Michigamme River. Electricity, running water, a land-line phone, satellite (Direct TV) + VCR/DVD and WiFi internet are some of the creature comforts on this rustic island. Enjoy the wildflowers and wilderness. Rustic Decor throughout. High beam ceilings. Kitchen, breakfast bar, bathroom with shower, plus a gorgeous natural wood-burning cobblestone fireplace warms the living room. Linens and towels provided. An open mind and flexibility are keys to fun here. The island is only Water-access only. Be your own captain! One of our boats will be waiting for you, as you venture off to the Island. A Jon boat (best in low water), pontoon**NOT guaranteed (best in high water) with electric motor, canoe, aluminum boat are all provided for your sole use during your stay. We try to keep all the boats running at all times, yet Spring and Fall are the times that it is most challenging. If you need a specific boat (i.e. pontoon) to have the fun you dream about, then the Island may not be your best choice. Flexibility is not just nice virtue, yet a necessity. Off-street and alongside road parking. Republic Island is the home of excellent fishing, bird watching (a bald eagle nests nearby), and canoeing. Requirements for Island: You are able-bodied enough to be able to drive/row the boat/canoe, if needed. Plus you should have decent agility to walk up and down the uneven walkways. A positive, flexible attitude is essential for a good experience. As a Special Education teacher by trade, I wish we could find a way to accommodate all abilities in the Republic Island experience. While you do not need to be an athlete, at least an average level of agility is definitely required in order to have a positive experience for you and your family. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Animals: Yes, there are all kinds of animals that like to roam around the island. While you don't see most of them, you have to be someone who is comfortable in that true rustic, outdoorsy environment. This is not Disney World. We have seen snakes (non-poisonous), mice, squirrels, otters, beavers, skunks and a raccoon. You are on a secluded parcel of land. While we haven't seen any moose, deer or bear actually on the island, it's not an impossibility. We do our absolute best to keep all the critters away and out of the cabin. We do not use Decon within the cabin due to pets and children being part of our family of guests. Fall is the biggest challenge as the little critters, including mice, are looking for a warm place to stay the winter months. We are vigilant about keeping critters at bay, and are always open to suggestions. Bathroom: Even though the Island is rustic, we do have a normal toilet and sink with a neat shower that has you surrounded by the logs of the 1800s. We even have a wonderful, heated floor in the bathroom. The bathroom has the historic drain slope of the room, which was customary at the time of new, indoor plumbing, though we have tried to maintain the historic feel. Beach/Swimming: There is NOT a traditional sandy beach around the Island. Personally, I truly wish there was a way to make that happen. We've done our best to create a peaceful experience, yet being on a flowing river, there isn't a simple way to maintain a sandy beach. My apologies. We recommend that people head into town (2 miles) to enjoy the sandy beach area in Republic when they want to swim in a traditional way on a beach. Plus, to be honestly, the river bottom is generally muddy, so it isn't the ideal place to enjoy traditional swimming. If you are an excellent swimmer, we do enjoy taking the pontoon boat out into the middle of the river, with the 1-2 mph current, jumping in and swimming around, yet I wouldn't recommend that for anyone who isn't a strong swimmer. The middle of the river is 20 feet deep. Boats: Ideally, basic boat knowledge is needed for the island. Still, a ton of patience, a flexible attitude and sense of humor can make it work as well. Generally the SPRING and the FALL are times where pontoon boat use is limited. There will be at least 1 boat available for your sole use, and we have up to 4 boats that may be available. I'm sorry, we can not guarantee which boats will be available for your use during your stay. There will be one of the following boats available (yet no guarantee on which one), there is a : *pontoon boat with an electric motor (you must still be able to row, if needed.) * jon boat (flat bottom) * old-school 14 foot fishing boat * canoe Considering bringing your own boat? Bring an extra dose of patience and flexibility. There is a gravel launch within 1/2 mile and a nice cement launch 2 miles away, right off of MI-95. The Michigamme River is quite rocky, and we've lost a few motors + props in the past 10 years. That is why we only have a simple electric motor on the pontoon. It all depends on the fluctuating water levels. Sometimes your navigation skills are not enough, as the rocks seems to creep up as the water fluctuations are a natural occurrence. We normally have 4 boats for your use during your stay, though at times we have to pull various ones due to the water levels. The jon boat is always our trusted simple boat. Bugs: Yes, there are bugs on the Island. There are mosquitos. The Island vacation is not for everyone. It is for true outdoorsy guests who are flexible and love an adventure, while enjoying many of the amenities of an historic cabin. We've added a screened in porch in 2016 to allow our guests to enjoy the Island scenery, while limiting the impact of mosquitos. Cell phone service: Cell phone service is generally unreliable in the Upper Peninsula when you travel outside of Marquette and Escanaba. Therefore, we have a land line at the cabin with unlimited local and long distance service for your use. We also have Wifi, if you have an iphone, facetime audio is a great way to use your phone if your service isn't strong or nonexistant. Children: Our experience has been that kids either absolutely love or hate the Island experience. The kids who can entertain themselves, don't need TV or electronics for fun and love the outdoors (especially fishing) think they are in heaven. It's the best trip of their lives. On the flip side, I've had even one parent leave early because her kids were so bored and therefore she couldn't relax. Plus, they were scared of every sound and never wanted to leave the cabin. When they found out that we only had 3 channels, they were very upset. I just like to make sure everyone is aware of the pros and cons to the Island experience. It isn't Disney World, yet I've been surprised at how many people have that expectation. It is important to us that our guests have the best experience possible. Again, depending on the ages of your kids, it may be ok. There is just a lot more to consider when we rent to the Island with families in mind. I'll admit that it wasn't the easiest place to be when we had our 5 year old with us. It's getting easier each year, though between 1-4 years old, it was huge challenge. Our little Luke loved to explore and wander. There are steep parts of the island. We just have be extra-vigilant when he is there. Dock: The docks are floating docks. Due to the fluctuation of the river levels, we are not able to control, yet do our best to control the placement of the docks. During the late summer/fall, and the Michigamme River can be low and muddy. We advise you to please bring boots, plus your patience between mid-August and October. Fishing: Generally the Island has very good fishing. Small mouth bass, walleye, perch, pike and pan fish are what most of our guests report catching. If you are a trout fisherman, trout can be caught in the upper Michigamme River. Most tributaries have brook trout that flow into the Michigamme, yet it is not a trout stream per se. I would recommend our Tioga Falls Cabin if you are interested in trout fishing. Fishing poles: I would advise you to bring your own fishing poles to the Island. Grocery Store: The closest, full-sized grocery store is about a 1/2 hour drive from the cabin, Ishpeming. It is the IGA Jubilee right on U.S 41. If you are driving from Wisconsin/Chicago, the last grocery store is in Iron Mountain. There is a little store in the town of Republic, about 15 minutes from the cabin, yet there isn't a large selection, and the prices are convenience-store equivalent. There is a larger convenience store/BP Gas station on the corner of U.S. 41 and MI-95, about 20 minutes north of the cabin. Hammock: We do have a hammock on the Island. I love it! Enjoy! Internet: Wi-fi is on the Island! Personally, I do think it is good to disconnect from technology for a while, yet I listened to our guests and realized that many do need to check in with work while they are vacationing. Linens: Yes, we provide your sheets and linens. Just like a hotel, the beds will be made for you upon arrival. If you are fussy about the thread count of your sheets, just let me know, and I'll make sure we leave a bed open for your sheets. We have just the basic sheets, pillows, pillow cases and bath towels. Parking: You can either park your car in the off-road parking spot or alongside River Road. We highly recommend that you pull into the parking space, just in case one of the logging trucks drives by. Still, you can park roadside adjacent to the path leading toward the Island. Pets: Yes, we do accept dogs, yet we do ask that you please clean up after them both inside and outside the cabin. Plus, if you allow them on the furniture, we do ask that you please bring your own linens/blankets for them to sleep on. Just let us know which bed you will be using with them, and we'll make sure it is ready for your sheets when you arrive. Plus, if the pet hair starts to build, we do ask that you please run the vacuum. Generally, dogs love the Island with all the water and places to explore. Their food does tend to attract mice, so vigilance is needed. Space: Our 1100 sq. ft. log cabin on a 2 acre Island, it is ideal for 2-4 people. It is considered very tight for 6 people, and therefore I do not recommend 6 people on the island together. The island experience is unique in that it brings out the true essence in people when they truly have a chance to get away from it all. Still, six different personalities, especially if they aren't in one family unit can bring out conflict. There are people who feel claustrophobic on an island, even though you can literally see your car 300 feet across the river. We have always had very positive feedback from couples and small families. It's an ideal, private get-away. Towels: Yes, we provide towels. It's always good to bring extra though. Washer and dryer: No. It's on my wish list. ATV's: closest official snowmobile trail is 241, approximately 1.5 miles from the island. Distances: * Pictured Rocks: 1 hour and 45 minute drive * Marquette: 45 minutes (northeast) * Ishpeming: 20 minutes * Iron Mountain: 45 minutes (south *Tahquamenon Falls State Park: 3 hours *Mackinac Bridge: 3 hours and 50 minutes away.
