Please be aware that our property has a 2-acre spring-fed pond with raft, which is lovely for swimming, but guests must take full responsible for their own water safety. Springtime brings fly-fishing, morel mushroom hunting, wild asparagus, the beginning of bike season, and bird migration. Because our property is mixed with open space, woods, and water, we see almost every bird imaginable —bluebirds, scarlet tanagers, Baltimore orioles, grosbeaks, indigo buntings, goldfinches, nuthatches, hummingbirds, hawks, kestrels, and much more. There is even a large bald eagle's nest five miles up the road. Summertime brings the Driftless Music Festival, Farmer's Market, trips to the Drive-In and American Player's Theater, along with lazy days on the pond, canoeing down the Kickapoo River, unbeatable bike rides, cooking out, and cocktails on the porch. Winter is the perfect time to cozy up by the wood stove, read, knit (visit the fabulous Ewetopia fiber shop in Viroqua) play games, visit with friends and cook large meals with a little bit of sledding and/or snowshoeing interspersed. All in all, this is a wonderful space in which to enjoy good company, and a perfect home base from which to explore this dynamic region. Interaction with GuestsWe will leave you alone to enjoy the space, but are always happy to answer any questions you may have. The SpaceThis property was once a working farm where my wife grew up milking cows. Now the barn and farm buildings are gone, and the house has recently been remodeled, making it the perfect country get-away. The house sits on top of a hill overlooking the beautiful rolling hills and valleys of the driftless region of southwest Wisconsin. Over 40 acres of the land is wooded and has groomed hiking trails with a fresh water spring and a giant rope swing for you to discover and give a try! The house is well stocked with essentials and the kitchen is fully functional for cooking. There is also a gas grill on the back porch, available for your use. The large back yard has ample room for a variety of outdoor games. And it includes a fire pit, perfect for campfires under the stars! Firewood is provided. Guest AccessDuring your stay you'll have the house and entire property all to yourself, so plan to take some time to explore! Interaction with GuestsWe live about 15 minutes from the property so interaction will be minimal, but we're always here if you need us. The NeighborhoodThis area of Wisconsin is known for it's rolling hills and beautiful landscape. Trout streams are common in the vicinity, with ample access for fishing. Our location, far from large cities, makes for dark skies at night, perfect for star gazing. Here are approximate travel times to some of our favorite things to do in the area: Downtown Richland Center (shopping, restaurants, etc) - 10 min. Kickapoo river (fishing, canoe rentals) - 20 min. Kickapoo valley reserve (hiking, mountain bike and horseback trails) - 30 min. Wildcat mountain state park - 45 min. Devils Lake state park - 1 hr. Governor Dodge state park - 50 min. Wisconsin Dells - 1 hr. Sparta-Elroy bike trail - 1 hr. The House on the Rock - 50 min. Other Things to NoteThis area of Wisconsin is relatively remote and cell phone coverage can be spotty. But because the house in on a ridge we do get better cell coverage than some places in the area. You can expect decent coverage with Verizon or US Cellular, but very little to none with T-Mobile, AT&T or Sprint.
