Riebeek Kasteel and its sister village Riebeek West bot lie on the slopes of Van Riebeeck’s Kasteel (Kasteelberg). The early settlers could not agree on the site for a church and this resulted in two churches being built and the establishment of two towns. Kasteelberg (946 m) is a mountain surrounded by the wheatlands of the Swartland in the middle reaches of the Berg River Valley. Corporal Pieter Cruythoff led an expedition to barter cattle from the Khoikhoi for the Dutch East India ships calling at the Cape. In 1661, Pieter Meerhoff, one of Cruythoff’s party climbed the mountain and named it ‘Riebeecks Casteel’ in honor of the Governor of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck.
