The SpaceOur eco-retreat is registered as "Land for Wildlife". All aspects of creating Tin Dragon Trail Cottages have adopted principles of ecological sustainability with the objectives of providing a comfortable eco retreat. We produce our own electricity from a micro-hydro scheme, rain water is harvested for the cottages and we use an enviro-cycle system to treat waste water. Our farm has a herd of alpacas, organic vegetable garden & fruit orchard, free range chooks (Australian for “chickens”) and a very friendly, but “failed” sheep dog called Rusty. Tin Dragon Trail Cottages’ two-bedroom cottages called Ah Ping (1 queen & 2 king single beds) and Ah Moy (2 queen beds), accommodate two couples or a family of four. Ah Moy (two-bedroom) cottages has disabled access. Each cottage has a kitchen, clothes washing machine, bathroom and outside private BBQ facility. Tariff includes fresh breakfast ingredients supplied for the first day. Linen is supplied and refreshed upon request. Dinner and BBQ ingredients or picnic basket can be supplied, by arrangement. 3G wireless is available for Telstra & Optus mobiles, but can be unreliable (and expensive). Our property does not have access to fast broadband internet and therefore cannot provide WiFi. Guest AccessYou are welcome to share the produce from our organic vegetable garden, fruit orchard and hens and to mingle with our alpacas. You can view the Chinese mining history interpretation in our Settler’s hut, take the short-circuit walk through the Ah Ping alluvial mine site, or the longer Guiding Star Creek circuit walk which takes you along the Ringarooma River and Guiding Star Creek into the Briseis water race before returning to the Settler’s hut. You are welcome to share our library of books and DVDs which includes natural and cultural history titles and Australian films. For most of the year you can fish for trout in the Ringarooma River just outside your cottage. Interaction with GuestsWe are happy to spend time with our guests describing the aspects of our sustainable farm and the local Chinese history and to assist guests with planning their exploration of our region. On occasions we have shared meals with our guests. If guests wish to be totally private, that's OK too. The NeighborhoodTin Dragon Trail Cottages is near the small rural town of Branxholm in North East Tasmania. We are far from the city. Perhaps only 1.5 hrs from Launceston, but far from the conveniences of city living. We have poor internet, no digitial TV and unreliable mobile coverage. There are only a few cafes and no restaurants open at night. However you can enjoy country-style pub meals in the evening at our local Imperial Hotel in Branxholm. There are some amazing walks through sub-tropical rain forest to waterfalls and panoramic mountain views. Please ask us. I do have info on our internet page and a Blog--you can search for these. This year the Blue Derby mountain bike trails opened: 80 km of world-class trails. You can hire bikes and a shuttle bus service to experience these amazing trails. Just ask us. (plenty of information is available online) Getting AroundTin Dragon Trail Cottages is 90 minutes drive from Launceston. There is a daily (return) bus into Launceston. Otherwise there is only an expensive taxi service. There is an adequate, though small supermarket within walking distance of the cottages. Most guests hire a vehicle for their tour around Tasmania. We have some suggestions which you can download from our internet page. Other Things to NotePlease let us know if you are running late so that we know you are safe (not lost!) and so we can have your cottage ready for you. It would be terrific if you could drop in to our reception office when you are leaving! We do like to meet our guests and receive feedback.

Interaction with GuestsWe are not located on site. We will try and meet and greet all guests to ensure a comfortable check in. We are contactable at any time to assist our guests. The NeighborhoodThe historic village of Derby is located in the heart of Tasmania's beautiful North East. It is just a short drive from many interesting and beautiful places of interest such as world class golf courses at Bridport, walking trails, mountain bike trails, beaches, water falls and National Parks. Locally in Derby, there are many kilometres of shared mountain bike/walking trails (officially opening Dec/Jan) which give access to water falls, wilderness areas, and historic tin mining sites. In addition there are cafes, arts and craft stores, Derby Schoolhouse Museum, Corner Store Tin Centre Café and Interpretation Centre (in addition to coffee and food) will shortly offer bike hire, small repairs and bike accessories. Other Things to NoteThe really good looking photos were taken by a talented young Launceston photographer Oliver King. Highly recommend that you take a look at Oliver's web site (website hidden) We have also recently received some fisheye photos taken by Chris from Flow Mountain Bike. Chris and Mick stayed with us during the filming of the Stage 3 Black Dragon and Atlas Trails opening.

The SpaceThe farm is a really beautiful property that is perfect for people who want to relax, enjoy time in nature and really enjoy some peace and quiet. The house itself is comfortable and cosy, and on warmer days, can be enjoyed from the deck that stretches the full length, and looks over the paddocks and landscape. There are uninterrupted views in all directions. Our home is located nearby, but hidden from sight by the trees, so guests will have the feeling of isolation and privacy. Guest AccessGuests are free to enjoy the landscape of the farm. We will provide details of where is accessible and how to stay safe while doing so. The farm has been landscaped with a great deal of native trees, and there is a thriving wildlife population. Bird lovers can enjoy parakeets, cockatoos, kookaburras, native hens and many other species right outside their door. There are also chances to see some of the many wallabies, echidnas and possums, and if you are lucky some of the bandicoots and platypus that live here. Interaction with GuestsWe are a friendly and sociable couple, but we also understand people's need for space. We are happy to give you complete privacy, but also happy to help out with local information, and chat a little if you are looking to connect a little. The NeighborhoodThe Northeast often gets by-passed on trips to Tasmania, but we believe it has some really beautiful offerings. It has a lower number of tourists, and therefore allows for a more authentic experience. The local town of Scottsdale offers all the amenities you might want, while also maintaining a slow pace. The are makes a great base for exploring the city of Launceston, the Blue Derby Bike Trails, or some of the beautiful and lesser known hill walking nearby. Getting AroundYou will need your own transport to reach the farm and to make the most of the area. There is plenty of parking space, and a covered area for bikes etc.... Other Things to NoteWe understand that when you are on holiday its nice to be able to relax on arrival. The house will always be equipped with basic toiletries so you don't need to worry if you've forgotten your toothbrush. We also make sure there are staples in the cupboard, so you don't have to waste money on items you will only use once. No need to think about cooking oil, tea bags, herbs and spices. If you are arriving late and will miss the shops we can make sure there is some fresh milk, bread and eggs for your first morning (on request). There is also a small vegetable garden at the back of the house where you will find herbs, and some salad leaves (at certain times of the year), which you can pick for yourself. We have an old, three-legged old farm dog called Blake, and a young border collie called Luan, who will bark at people as they arrive, but are friendly and nothing to worry about. The chickens might come to say hello too!!
