Visit nearby Pacific beaches (full of shells), off-the-beaten-path roads into the mountains, hike into spring-fed waterfalls or take a drive to Anton Valley. Special rates can be arranged at Finca (Farm) El Guayabo for a day of horseback riding, learn about sugar cane processing and to experience an active farm environment including lunch. Also, close by is Finca Agroturistica El Manantial a great family-friendly location with local animals and birds for viewing, trails to wander and a beautiful swimming pool. The open air restaurant serves traditional dishes and can provide poolside drinks and snacks too. The Anton District is rich in history and the small town friendliness of the residents makes your stay enriching. Enjoy breakfast at Fonda Luishes located inside the Farmer's Market. Luis is a young entrepreneur serving locally sourced dishes so you can sample Panamanian cuisine. Getting AroundWe are happy to arrange an airport pick-up in a private car ($90) or you can get a taxi from the airport to the public transport terminal in Panama. A coach bus or local bus options are available directly to Anton. If we can assist you with getting to Anton please ask for details. Other Things to NoteVilla Astoria prides itself on being a bit different from an all-inclusive or hotel accommodation. Appealing to the eco-friendly traveller, the villa does not have air conditioning or hot water (a solar water heating system is in the plans, though) and promotes less water usage with cool showers and low flush toilets. We are happy to uphold the Panamanian law of no smoking in public places. The property does accommodate pets, sorry! Although you will meet dogs, cats, roosters, chickens and maybe a parrot named Sandra or a bull named Favorito. We find that the shared space encourages guest to guest interactions that often turn into shared trips to the beach or a bus ride to El Valle (Anton Valley). You can find signed bottles of wine shared by visitors and certainly read through our guest book for tip and hints on traveller's adventures in the area.

We decided we wanted to come back and spend some time to see if this was a place we wanted to settle. Just by chance we happened to see an ad for a home for rent in Volcancito, just 5 minutes from downtown Boquete. After a quick look we rented this quaint home for 2 months. What a find! This charming "cottage #2", located on a huge lot with lovely gardens, views and completely private, was perfect. This is not a "rental" property, but the home of a lovely person who is an artist and writer. We settled right in and began enjoying the mountain-town life. While we had a car, we often walked to town (30 minutes - downhill) and then took a taxi home for $3.00. I know there is a review that says it takes an hour to get to town, but this is not true- perhaps they went via the highway and not the hiking trail. The home is eclectically decorated including wonderful original art work. It is comfortably furnished with all the amenities you would want- a good assortment of cooking utensils, large flatscreen TV, and lots of seaing areas both inside and out. We were also lucky to have our lovely cleaning lady, Yilka and her husband Osvaldo, who is the gardener. They couldn't have been more helpful or kind. One of the best features of this home is the large wrap around deck. Most mornings and evenings we sat on the deck and watched the exotic birds, stars and the lights of David. Absolutely magical! If you are looking for a rental that is not the typical sterile rental unit, but a truly warm and charming home - this is it." . . . by Cindy SadlerREVIEWWe stayed with Marni for several weeks in early January and it suited our needs exactly. The cottage is comfortable and charming with lovely art on the walls and fully equipped. Netflix on the TV for those quiet evenings. The area is beautiful as well . . . . Couple from Sherbet Lake, CanadaREVIEWI'm not much for writing reviews, but here it goes. We stayed at this place for four months, it was beautiful. Take it from me staying there for four months you get to know the place and the people around there. The owner, Marni, would bend over backwards to please you- she gave us everything we expected and more. The location of the cottages is great, you're only a short walk from town. The climate is about perfect- it doesn't get too humid and the nights cool down. There are also lots of cabs- for only three bucks to town, what the heck. The village is great, lots of good restaurants and the people are so friendly. Marni will give you all the ins and outs of the good places to eat, places to go and things to do. You'll be back- trust me . . . Jay H. This property is so beautiful. You can see the sunrise and sunset from the living room window as well as the Volcano. From the shared covered Terrace and the gardens, you can see the Pacific and the Jaramillo Mountains. It is very private with lots of small areas to enjoy the outdoors including a small "jungle" park featuring a winter creek and lots of exotic birds. Hang out in the hammock down there and enjoy a cup of Bouqete's world famous coffee- mmmmmm! We are 7 minutes from the village centre or a lovely 30 minute hike. Taxis are readily available and only $3.00. Weekly car rentals are also available locally. There is lots of onsite parking. The neighbourhood is a mix of expats and Panamanian and is very rural and quiet. There is a nice, small, inexpensive hotel close by if you have visiting guests. You have easy access to hiking, 2 golf courses, horseback riding, zip lining, white water rafting, a great selection of restaurants, delis, bakeries and a weekly farmer's market, theatre and live music.

While we had a car, we often walked to town (30 minutes - downhill) and then took a taxi home for $3.00.The home is eclectically decorated including wonderful original art work. If you are looking for a rental that is not the typical sterile rental unit, but a truly warm and charming home - this is it." . . . by Cindy Sadler The cottages are located 7 minutes from town by a $3 taxi or a comfortable 45 minute walk. Although close to town, the 2 acre property is very rural with spectacular views. The neighbourhood is quiet and private. The groups have many garden areas as well as a small jungle corridor with path, hammock and summer creek. Parking is free and onsite.

It passes through tropical jungle and the best rafting season is between June and December. 4. While we had a car, we often walked to town (30 minutes - downhill) and then took a taxi home for $3.00.The home is eclectically decorated including wonderful original art work. If you are looking for a rental that is not the typical sterile rental unit, but a truly warm and charming home - this is it." . . . by Cindy Sadler

You'll be back- trust me . . . Jay H.
