The SpaceThe perfect place to escape from the rat-race! Beautiful three bedroom house on 1.5 acres, backing up to National Forest. Available to rent by the room or the whole house (subject to a maximum party size of 8, with 2 using sofabed in living room). The two upstairs bedrooms have full-size beds and the downstairs bedroom has a queen-size sofa bed. Located in a quiet and secluded mountain community, this is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax, but there is also great access to ski resorts (Sugarbush 45 mins, Killington 30 mins, Middlebury 20 mins), hiking, fishing, swimming etc. There's truly something to do in every season. Great place to check out the fall foliage from late September to October. The community also features 2 tennis courts and a swimming pond and is a great place for leisurely walks, snow-shoeing etc. Burlington, Montpelier and Rutland are within easy reach and the local town of Rochester has a great selection of restaurants, a lively bar and there's often live music and entertainment. Guest AccessGuests have access to pretty much the whole house, with the exception of the sleeping loft, which we use for storage and ask guests not to use. The NeighborhoodGreat Hawk is a peaceful and secluded mountain community, conveniently located for access to the amenities in the town of Rochester. We were attracted to how quiet the community is, and there's also no light pollution, so guests always enjoy an undisturbed night sleep! In the summer it's great to sit out on the deck and look up at the stars! Other Things to NoteThe roads in the community are dirt roads and are relatively steep in places. For visits in the winter, the roads can be snow covered and icy in places, so 4x4 and or proper winter tires are highly recommended. Guests without these can easily park at the bottom of the driveway, but that adds 50 yards for you to carry your belongings up to the house. The driveway is plowed after every snowfall of 3 or more inches and sand is put down periodically, but we'd still recommend you have a vehicle capable of dealing with Vermont winters!

Rochester welcomes visitors from all over the world, and we'd love to welcome you. Getting AroundRoute 100 is the key road up the middle of Vermont, and it passes through some lovely areas, including our village. There's not much traffic here, so biking is a wonderful way to get around. We have a world-class and well known bike store, Green Mountain Bikes, who have great bikes available for rental, or for service on your own bike. There are many hiking trails nearby, ranging from easy to challenging, and some of these trails are excellent for trail biking. In the winter, the nearby VAST system of trails offers some very special winter snowmobiling. Whatever your choice, the options are here!

The SpaceWe love our vacation home! Uniquely situated, the house is 10 minutes from the town of Rochester, but high up in the hills on 2 acres of land. The photos do not even begin to do justice to our view. We have 3 closed bedrooms (2 with queen beds and one with 2 twins) and a queen-sized futon in an open room on the lower level. A deck extends the length of the house and has a 180-degree view of the Green Mountains. One of the highlights of the home is the large built-in stone wood-burning fireplace. Please note: There is a set of stairs to climb to the entrance of the house. The house is updated in its amenities, but still rustic in its charm. We have a fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, blender, food processor, coffee machine, extra-large capacity washer and dryer, and small gas grill. Kitchen is fully equipped for cooking all meals. But it still feels like a remote cabin, filled with books to read and large sofas for relaxing in front of the fire. There are heaters in the main rooms on each floor. We have wi-fi and a smart TV that has a Netflix subscription. But it is in a remote area and the internet can be slow at times. It should always be possible to check email, but may be difficult to stream content at certain times of day or with many computers online. We also have a highchair, pack-n-play, toys, etc. 30-40 minutes to four ski resorts-- Sugarbush, Killington, Pico, and Middlebury Bowl. Great cross-country and snow-shoeing within 15 minute drive. In the housing community at the bottom of the mountain, there is a swimming pond, two tennis courts, and a play structure for kids. Guest AccessThe whole house will be yours. Everything's included, including firewood, kitchen staples, and toiletries. It is our home and our things, but you are free to use whatever we have in the house, which includes fully stocked kitchen cupboards, plenty of large towels, fluffy bathrobes, and newly reupholstered sofas. Dogs are permitted with prior approval. Interaction with GuestsWe will not be in the home when you are here. You will be letting yourselves into the house. You will be able to reach us via email and phone at any time and we have a local caretaker to contact with any problems. The NeighborhoodIn the community housing, there are 2 tennis courts and a swimming pond. Hiking or snowshoeing is right outside your door. Rochester is a charming New England town that has a local supermarket and state liquor store. Great local dining includes four stellar choices- an upscale diner for breakfast and lunch (and one of the last soda shops in Vermont), bakery/cafe featuring great coffee, baked goods, and vegetarian fare (and free wifi), School Street Bistro for dinner, and the Huntington House dining room and tavern (often with live music). We also have an art gallery, bike shop, and ski rental in town. There is an organic pick-your-own berry farm just outside of town (blueberries and raspberries!). Tons of hiking, snowshoeing, tubing, etc. The house is in the Green Mountain National Forest, centrally located to get to great hiking on the Long Trail, cross-country skiing paths, and snowshoeing. We are 30-40 minutes from Killington, Sugarbush, Pico, and Middlebury Bowl. Getting Around**The house is in the Green Mountains, atop a hill, in rural Vermont. In the winter, you will need a car with proper snow tires, tire chains, or at least all-wheel drive. The roads ARE plowed, as is our driveway, but there is always a chance you will need to travel during a snowfall, when roads are a little trickier, especially if you don't have a lot of experience driving in snow.** Other Things to NoteThere is a large set of stairs to get into the house.

Getting AroundCar required to get around and four wheel drive recommended for navigating Vermont in the winter months. Other Things to NoteDuring the winter months we strongly recommend four-wheel drive vehicles given the driveway is dirt, on a hill, and can be tricky to navigate even when plowed. The spiral staircase you see pictured is great to look at, but can be tricky for small children and dogs. For very small children we recommend some sort of barrier be set up. For most dogs, they will not be able to navigate the staircase, but can get in and out on both levels of the house.

The Village of Rochester features great eateries for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a bakery, a lovely public library, art gallery, antique store, a great playground at the elementary school, swimming holes, yoga studio, and more, and it is within driving distance of larger towns like Rutland and Killington, Middlebury, Waitsfield and Warren, and West Lebanon NH for day trips. Getting AroundPublic transportation is a 20+ minute drive away - a vehicle is necessary (4 wheel drive and snow tires are required in the winter months). Parking for 2-3 vehicles is available at the Guest House. Other Things to NoteThe owner has 3 dogs - they're friendly and (usually!) well-behaved - 1 cat, a small flock of chickens and several friendly horses (who graze in view of the Guest House) on the farm. Please be aware of electrified fencing (especially with small children!), and leave all gates as you found them. Maple syrup, extra produce and eggs offered for sale when available. Please consider that you may or may not have cell service during your stay - AT&T has good coverage, but Verizon is spotty...there is a nice rock on the mountain top where it works well! Check coverage maps for other carriers.
