    Charming 1820 stone house, The Cairn, just off Rte 103 in a small village enclave reached by crossing the historic Bartonsville covered bridge- rebuilt after hurricane Irene. The house is surrounded by a lovely garden that reaches down to the Williams River in the back. The main floor has an open kitchen, dining and living room perfect for sharing memorable moments together. The kitchen is a treasure trove of old Vermont details, a beautiful old soapstone sink, and large center island made from local barn board-rustic, old farm tools converted to hold kitchen utensils, all the basic amenities but fun and convenient. A comfortable downstairs den offers a place for some quiet time; wonderful for causal contemplations, reading, watching TV (cable) or playing some games. There is also a pull out sofa (?) Upstairs are 3 bedrooms, each decorated with cozy, old-cottage charm and with double beds in each room and ample closet space throughout. There is a large, full bathroom downstairs and a half bath upstairs and a new stackable washer and dryer. Wireless WIFI throughout the house. The thick, exposed stone walls in the living/kitchen area not only add charm and make this a very special place to spend vacation time but also hold the heat in in the winter and help cool the house in the summer. Skiing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating can all be found in the area. The Cairn is within 30 minutes driving distance to 4 major ski areas (Okemo, Magic Mtn, Bromley and Stratton. Cross-country ski trails in nearby Grafton, ice-skating in Chester or at Jackson Gore, Okemo. Nearby Chester Vermont offers a trove of surprises: a variety of wonderful restaurants, a great fun Irish bar, a world-class bookstore, art galleries, international wine store, French bakery and English tea house. Discover the famous Vermont Country Store with their incredible merchandise offerings and products, the Antique Center in Chester or visit the Stone Village in Chester Depot. For those who love active sports in summer there are a myriad of places to discover. For golf there is the Rockingham Golf Course or Tater Hill (check to be sure about this), tennis can be played at the public courts in Chester or various private clubs in the area. Hike the Appalachian Trail or swim the Williams river at the edge of the Cairn’s property line.

    The SpaceIn 1960 my father In-Law came to Vermont with the idea of buying a second home to be used as Ski home for his active family. He surprised everybody by buying a 500 acre Dairy Farm. The chalet was built in the late 60s and sited to take full advantage of the amazing mountain and valley views. The property is easy to get to even in winter and nearby many Southern Vermont attractions, ski resorts, restaurants and shopping. Guest AccessEntire House and 325 acres of Land. Very private and peaceful setting. Interaction with GuestsWhile Nancy and I live in Weston, about a half hour away, My wife's brother and his wife live within a mile of the house. Jim is retiring soon from his Westhersfield, VT Town Manager's position and Virginia is an accomplished acupuncturist and gardener. Jim and Virginia will help with settling you into the home and are nearby to assist as needed. The NeighborhoodThis is a rural area of well kept homes and farms. Very accessible, but very quiet and private. Getting AroundOnly about 3 miles from I-91 exit 6 and close to many southern VT attractions. Okemeo Mountain, Stratton Mountain, Bromley Mountain and Magic Mountain are less than an hour away. Close by towns of Chester, Springfield and Bellows Falls. Hartford CT is closest airport about 1 hr. 45 minutes. Other Things to NoteProperty and trail map provided of 325 acres.       This is a charming, cosy stone house, wonderful for weekends with friends or family get-togethers. you arrive by crossing through the Bartonsville Bridge, one of Vermont's covered bridges. The house is perfect as a base for exploring beautiful southern Vermont, a place to set out on adventurous hikes or simply to rest and recharge energies and spiritual nourishment.. good for couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids).

      "Memorable 1820 stone house, The Cairn, is just off Route 103 in a small Vermont village reached by crossing the historic Bartonsville covered bridge, rebuilt after Hurricane Irene. The house is set off by a stone wall in front and a spacious one acre lawn in back overlooking the Williams River. The open plan first floor; kitchen, dining room and living room has two thick exposed stone walls. The kitchen is practical, yet rustic and original, with an old soapstone sink, a large center island made from local barnboard and converted farm tools holding kitchen utensils. A comfortable downstairs study offers a quiet place for watching T.V.,reading or playing games. There is wireless WIFI throughout the house. The study also has a pullout couch for extra guests. Upstairs are three bedrooms, with double beds and decorated with cosy English cottage charm. There is also a half bath. Downstairs has a large full bathroom with tub and shower and a new stackable washer/dryer. The Cairn is within 30minutes (or less) to Okemo, Magic Mtn. or Bromley and slightly more to Stratton or Killington. Nearby Grafton (a lovely colonial town) has cross country ski trails as does a large area near Bromley. There is outdoor ice skating in Chester (weather cooperating) and indoor at Jackson Gore, Okemo. Adjacent Chester offers a variety of good restaurants, a delightful Scottish pub, a world class bookstore, an international wine and cheese shop and a French bakery. There are wonderful towns around the area with more first class restaurants and attractions such as the Vermont Country Store in Weston (which has an annex close to Bartonsville). For summer visitors, Weston also has a renouned summer playhouse. For sports lovers, Chester has tennis courts and a town swimming pool. Check out the Williams River too. Golf and tennis are available at Tater Hill, the Rockingham Golf and the Springfield Country Club. Hiking on the Appalachian Trail or various ski mountains.         Surrounded by 20 acres of field and forest, house is off rural rd perfect for getting away from it all! Several state parks and ski areas within 25 miles including nice walking area on Connecticut river. Vermont Country Store is 3 miles away, historic towns of Bellows Falls, Chester and Grafton all nearby.Town of Windsor just 20 miles north has Harpoon Brewery, Simon Pierce Glassworks and canoe outfitter. No TV or internet service, decent cell phone coverage. Cafe and bookstore in town have WIFI. Pets welcome! Lots to do nearby or perfect spot to do nothing and relax.
