The SpaceJust completed in 2015, this cabin has all of the comforts of a fully air-conditioned house. All décor and furniture is high-end and very clean. We provide everything you will need except for food, including water, coffee, toiletries, towels, etc. We will never ask you to "clean up after yourself", as some listings do. Instead, we have a mutual respect for our guests, and simply ask that you do your best to let go of your daily stresses. It is a getaway, and we want you to relax! A new craft distillery has opened within walking distance of the cabin! The 47.79 acre property has mostly wooded rolling terrain, with deep ravines and ridges easily navigable by maintained trails. The stocked pond sits just downhill, and within view, of the cabin--and is easily accessed by a short walk. Guest AccessYou will have access to the entire house and 47.79 acre property. Trails are maintained throughout most of the woods, with a "back country" 10 - 15 acres behind the pond for adventurous hikers. Interaction with GuestsWe will be available by phone and email during your stay if needed, and are available to answer questions in advance as well. Upon booking, you will receive a key code to the front door that will be activated for the duration of your stay, as well as detailed and tailored directions for navigation. The NeighborhoodEverything but food provided! 2 1/2 hours from the D.C. Beltway, Pine Thicket Pond Cabin is roughly halfway between Moorefield and Romney, WV--the two oldest towns in the state. Of special note, there is a new (very good) craft distillery within walking distance of the cabin! For more information, see flyi(URL HIDDEN) It is approximately half a mile away along the road, and we are in discussions with the owner to create a backwoods trail leading to it. They also have a zip line! We provide fishing poles, snowshoes, and fossil hunting gear to make sure that you try something new while here! The Potomac Eagle scenic railway offers rides near Romney, and Nancy Hanks' cabin, Abraham Lincoln's mother-in-law, is close by as well. Seneca Rocks, Monongahela National Forest, Spruce Knob, Smoke Hole Canyon and other scenic hiking destinations are approximately 45 minutes away. Swimming at Trout Pond is a little less than an hour away. The cabin is in a very rural setting, but it is not far to civilization. The neighboring properties are farms, forests, and a nice gentleman who keeps horses. Getting AroundAll nearby locations require driving in a car, with the important exception of the craft distillery, Flying Squirrel Ranch, which is a 1/2 mile walk away along the road, or a short drive. We are also working on a backwoods trail that will lead directly to the distillery from the cabin, but this is not expected to be in place for a few more months. The owner, Steven, holds an excellent conversation and hosts tastings of his gin, bourbons, brandies, and rums. Tell him we say hi! Other Things to NoteNote that the loft is counted as one of the two bedrooms, and is surprisingly private feeling. Leaf season: The majority of the property is covered by thick deciduous forests, which make for an ethereal experience during autumn leaf season. Although there are plenty of evergreens, the name "Pine Thicket" comes from an old reference on the property deed by a long ago owner. By design, there is no cable or internet!!! We have decided to encourage deep relaxation and escape from the digital world while at the cabin. However, your cell phone reception should be adequate in case of emergencies. One important exception to the electronic-free sanctuary is the DVD player/TV, and library of movies that we keep--strictly for cozy nights and rainstorms. Snowshoes, board games, fossil hunting equipment, bonfire pit (with grilling grates/irons), hiking trails, outdoor seating, a charcoal grill, and two fishing poles are freely available for guest use. The fossil hunting is good throughout the property, and includes Devonian era sea fossils (shells, brachiopods, etc.) We maintain a "best-of" collection of fossils onsite. Note that there are three beds: One gel/foam-topped full bed in the small bedroom, one queen bed in the loft, and one brand new queen sofa bed in the main room. There is space to setup an extra airbed in the loft as well. Coffee: There is an espresso machine store under the sink, and a basic coffee maker on top of the microwave. Regular and decaf grounds provided.

The SpaceTHE PROPERTY The "cabin" is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath small log home nestled in a 20 acre wooded parcel in a community abutting 10,000 acres of protected wildlife preserve. 2.5 hours from DC, it's 20 minutes of winding mountain gravel from the nearest paved road, offering nearly complete isolation. The nearest full time neighbor is 2 miles away. The view is a mixture of mountain and woods and the elevation is just enough to offer the perceived effects of "mountain air." It's great for relaxation and deeper sleep. We have spectacular sunsets to help you settle into the right evening mood, and clear night skies of star-gazing to help keep you there. During the day, the wildlife is varied and abundant including everything from many different types of deer to bears to wild turkeys, and some of the best bird-watching in the area with peregrine falcons, hawks, hummingbirds, even frequent sightings of the elusive scarlet tanager. You're welcome to enjoy it all on a rigorous hike or right from the comfort of the cabin. Either way, this is not a very touristy place to be, so come intent on long country drives to see anything else or just settle in for some true relaxation. BED AND ... BREAKFAST? Before coming to the country, I was an award winning chef, cookbook author and DC restaurateur featured in the single edition Celebrated Chefs of DC (DC's top 50 chefs). Food is included. For breakfast, lunch and snacking there is almost always cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese and crackers, microwave popcorn, coffee, tea, something for lunches and some kind of chocolate. The grocery store is quite a drive and restaurants are few. You're welcome to what's in the house, or to bring additional items you want around. For dinner, please let me know any dietary requirements or preferences you have and I'll work something up. I can accommodate any special diets and am happy to cook for you. There's some regular home cooking in the pictures. YOUR ROOM The room is a small private walk-out with a double bed. There is a guest bath for your exclusive use. ACCESS You have full access to the entire house and property including entertainment features like Wifi, wireless printer and 36" flat panel TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime and major network streaming news channels. Come and go as you please at any time of the day or night. THE AREA Historic Moorefield is a small city surrounded by farms and a little manufacturing influence. If you're into photography and scenic drives, the farms dotting the landscape are a great opportunity. Petersburg and Romney are both within driving distance for a day's trip if you're intent on hunting down history, but if you're coming to relax then park the car and pretend you don't know how to get anywhere (because you won't). FEE DETAILS I change the sheets and generally clean before and after each guest. As this is remote, the grocery store is about 40 minutes away and I make a trip for each reservation to make sure everything's topped off. Rather than raise the nightly rates, there is a one time "cleaning fee" of $40 no matter how long the visit to cover all of that. The $30 extra per night for couples covers food. Guest AccessFull access to the entire house and property including entertainment features like Wifi, wireless printer and 36" flat panel TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime and major network streaming news channels. Come and go as you please at any time of the day or night. Interaction with GuestsYou can be in my hair or feel like you've got the place to yourself. I'm social, but always have something else I can be doing and can easily spend the bulk of my time up in my office in the loft, giving you free reign of the house. Getting AroundYour stay includes being met on the highway and guided back. It's about a half hour from the Corridor H (Rt 55) highway. You'll need some help for that last bit from the highway! Other Things to NoteFor breakfast, lunch and snacking there is almost always cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese and crackers, microwave popcorn, coffee, tea and some kind of chocolate.
