Description
The Space

The Rachel Carson Room This listing is for the Rachel Carson Room, which has a queen and two twins (one in the bottom of a trundle bed). It can comfortably sleep 3 people. It can sleep a 4th if that person is a child who can be comfortable on a pull-out trundle bed. Our guest lounge and three bedrooms are upstairs, our accessible and dog-friendly room is downstairs. Bathrooms and showers are shared. Meals are served at our community table. Prices include a delicious, organic, local, made-to-order breakfast. Prices are for two people in a room. We happily accommodate dietary preferences/requirements (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, diabetic...). Full bar with 23 kinds of craft beer. We can provide lunch and dinner by reservation. The benefits of staying at the Milkweed Mercantile instead of less-expensive accommodations at Dancing Rabbit are many. Most importantly: this is what we do. The Mercantile was designed for YOUR comfort. Rooms and showers are spotless, the linens are clean and feel great, breakfast is included, and we (the owners of the Mercantile and long-time members of Dancing Rabbit) are on-hand to answer any questions you may have. Thick undulating strawbale walls provide tremendous insulation, providing warmth in the winter and helping to cool the building in the summer. Water is (filtered) rainwater, food is local and organic. Wifi included in rate. There are no phones or TVs in the rooms. We (delightfully) get poor cell phone reception. This is a place for peaceful relaxation, conversation and make-your-own entertainment. Our goal: to demonstrate that sustainability isn't about deprivation but about comfort, joy and living just a bit more lightly upon the Earth. Plus, we love what we do and enjoy pampering our guests - see our reviews on (website hidden) and (website hidden). The entire Mercantile can be rented for events (special birthday, receptions, etc.); rates include custom meals by our chef, room for 10 overnight guests, dining room for 20. PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS please note: We love to host traveling musicians on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and happily barter a meal and a place to sleep in exchange for a house concert. Please call for more info.

Guest Access

Guest lounge and screened-in wraparound porch at all hours. Dining room during meals. Bar and store 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Pizza and beer every Thursday 4:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Interaction with Guests

The Mercantile staff joins guests at our community table for all meals, enabling lively conversations and great connections. If you're looking for a private romantic meal, that can also be arranged!

The Neighborhood

Located in amongst gently-rolling hills in rural Northeast Missouri, Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage is close to nothing but on the way to lots of places. It is amazingly quiet here, and you will see more stars than you ever knew existed. 70 members live in this community based on ecological sustainability, and there are many examples of natural and alternative construction (strawbale, cob, etc.) We have opened our community to demonstrate our take on sustainable living, and ask that guests be respectful of the privacy of residents. Please ask about a tour! For more info please see the Dancing Rabbit website.
