It is hard to believe that about seventy miles north of our Nation's Capital, there is a sample of heaven tucked away in the Catoctin Mountains. For more than 50 years, our presidents who were in search of a cool and secluded get away, have made extensive use of this mountain top retreat known as Camp David, formerly Shangri-La. Beside natural beauty, our own presidential retreat is surrounded by history, culture, and adventures. Fall is our most beautiful time of the year, followed by spring.

Enjoy our our charming stone and shingle cottage perched the side of a mountain overlooking the Catoctin Mountain Valley for a get away! It is located only 12 minutes from great skiing at Ski Liberty in the former resort of Blue Ridge Summit , Pa. which was founded as a vacation site for nearby DC and Baltimore families, although many came from as far away as NY because the train went there. It is 5 miles or so from the famous Camp David. It is less than one mile from the Appalacian Trail. It is located in the area of Lee's retreat and the Battle of Montery Pass. It is 22 minutes to Gettysburg.. 1/2 hour to Monocacy, and about the same to Sharpsburg and Antietam. !!! The cottage has 2 large bedrooms upstairs(1 king- the other two twins that make a king on the second floor,) and a double bedroom on the first floor. Each bedroom has a bath. There is a living room , kitchen, dining room and small den. The deck is the best part! The large doors looking onto the expanse of the valley are an important feature of the house. We enjoy dining under the umbrella on the deck, sometimes cooking on the small grill. Our garden is very relaxing and has a fire pit for chilly evenings. We also have a small outdoor hot tub. Our little private lane makes the home a small enchanting estate with the feeling that you are far , far away in another place. The houses on the lane are all second homes for Washington families , except for one full time (house with the snow plow). It is extremely relaxing and we enjoy reading, walking up and down the lane, and just hanging out although we do go to Gettysburg to the movies and to Hagerstown to the Outlet Malls and amazing antique stores. Our favorite restaurants are the Cash town Inn (gourmet in the country) and the Carriage House in Emmitsburg (best crab cakes anywhere~) The local golf course is one of the oldest in America and is a challenge because of its wildness! . The Y in Wayneboro has very reasonable short term memberships for gym and pool . The Battle of Montery Pass and Lee's Retreat from Gettysburg were just around the corner. See North South Magazine, Feb. 27 2010!!!

There were just the three of us and plenty of room. You must be very proud of putting together a structure like that. I'm pretty handy but I would not tackle something like that. Thanks again for sharing your cabin and I'm positive we will return.' ~Vernon & Elaine .....'The cabin was great! We all enjoyed it. My brother-in-law wants to come again by himself to enjoy the solitude without 12 other people there! There's even a grate so you can cook like the settlers did (kids of all ages love this). The large porch and grilling deck feature a spectacular view for simply relaxing. Here's what people say about the Log Cabin in the Woods: 'We had a wonderfully relaxing time - perfect in all regards. The porch chairs were the perfect addition.' ~Judy 'We found everything in good order, and had a very good time in Thurmont. Amazing that you built the whole house yourself! Thanks for everything!' ~Leendert 'We had the BEST time and the cabin was so comfortable for us. Again, if you'd like any kind of recommendation, please just let me know what format you'd like it in. Also, you can feel free to give my e-mail address out to anyone who'd like a personal reference.' ~ Margie 'The cabin was and is amazing. My whole family had a great time and it really made my dad's birthday special. We all can't wait to come back. Thanks again,' ~Brian 'We had a great time. There were just the three of us and plenty of room. You must be very proud of putting together a structure like that. I'm pretty handy but I would not tackle something like that. We were lucky enough to have a fire for several nights and then it got very warm. We used your gas grill for steaks one night. Can you believe, we didn't even have time to shoot a game of pool. Thanks again for sharing your cabin and I'm positive we will return.' ~Vernon & Elaine 'The cabin was great! We all enjoyed it. My brother-in-law wants to come again by himself to enjoy the solitude without 12 other people there! ' ~Rita 'Enjoyed the cabin very much - it's just the type of cabin we'd like to purchase to have for our visits east to see family and friends. If you ever are interested in selling it, please let us know. Thanks so much,' ~Chris & Lisa It was a great weekend, and the cabin was the perfect place to be. Went to Liberty on Sat. where some did ski, and made a quick trip to the Falls today. Other than that we stayed in and played board games and the kids were playing their TV games. There were a couple of pool tournaments also. Everything went very nicely, and had a wonderful time. Thank you so much for allowing us to rent.' ~Linda and Chuck 'Great HOME!!! We loved staying at your cabin in the woods, it was better then we thought for a bunch of guys to get away from life for a little while. In time we will be re-visiting and recommending your second home. Thank you again,' ~andrew 'The time at the cabin as I said was needed and very pleasurable. We plan to come down again, possibly next year - only with the wives this time. The word has spread about the 'cabin in the woods' and you will hear more from us... Thanks again for a great time!!' ~Steve 'We really enjoyed your cabin and wish to thank you for opening your home to us. We tell people about our relaxing vacation in the cabin at Thurmont. Thank you.' ~Judy 'Hi Dave! We really enjoyed our stay. The group voted to visit there next year as well, so yes, let's convert that deposit into the next deposit. I'll check with everyone about which weekend to reserve and get back to you soon. thanks!' ~dani 'Well your cabin is wonderful. The girls had a great time. We were camping in luxury. Thank you for calling to make sure we were all set up. We loved everything about your cabin,. Thank you for letting us experience camping in luxury and we hope to come back in the fall possibly.' ~Wendy and the Girls from Troop 2037 'What a splendid time we had at the “cabin.” Our whole family, even all the grandchildren, came to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary. They treated us like a queen and king all week-end. The cabin is lovely and memorable. Sitting in the swing in the early morning takes you away from the world and helps you connect with God. Thank you for the cabin. May God bless you as you provide the cabin for rest.' ~Gilbert and Jeri The list of happy 'Cabin People' (as I call my guests) just goes on and on.
