Alpine Cottage is in the St Arnaud Village approx. 150 meters from State Highway 63 and Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes National Park. St Arnaud Village is approx 1hr 30min from the Picton Ferry terminal or 1hr 10min from Nelson/Airport. The area offers boating, fishing, mountain biking, skiing, bush walks/tramping and other outdoor pursuits. It also offers opportunity for more leisurely interests such as bird watching, photography etc. Shuttle transportation is available to the village, by arrangement and the cottage has off street parking.

          The SpaceWe have four guest rooms. 2 are located off the charming dining room. These are the Blue Room which has a queen bed and the Green Room which has a double. The two bedrooms that are located off the lounge are the Lavender room which is a twin accommodation and the Gold Room which has a queen bed. The dining room and the lounge both have cosy fires in season. Guest AccessWe live on site and guests are welcome to come directly to the front door. We'll leave the light on! Parking is available in front of Tophouse. Parking is free. At the weekend, the house is open as a café. During the summer season we are planning to have the café during the week as well. Interaction with GuestsWe are very sociable and love to welcome travellers. We can offer advice on things to do and see in the area. We are here if you want some chat but if you want to enjoy the peace and solitude, we will leave you to it. The NeighborhoodThe Nelson Lakes District is very popular for skiing, tramping, 4WD, mountain biking, water sports on Lake Rotoiti and stunning natural scenery. The Visitors Centre is in the village and operated by the Department of Conservation. Here you can get all the information you need for walks, tramping, mountain biking, fishing and wildlife in our beautiful Nelson Lakes National Park. The Rainbow Ski Field is not far from Tophouse, 10minutes down to other end of Tophouse Road and you are nearly opposite the road to the ski field. Getting AroundWe are 7 kms away from Saint Arnaud which is right on the edge of beautiful Lake Rotoiti and has a store and petrol station also a lovely café. A car would be required for ease of travel in the area. Other Things to NoteTophouse is a well-known historical location and a real part of the local history. We have documented a lot of the history for visitors to appreciate with photos and information on display. Cob houses are a rarity these days and people are curious about the techniques of cob building and the "recipe" for a good cob house. The resurgence of cob building for ecological reasons also inspires a lot of interest. It is an experience that a lot of people want to do is to stay a night in a cob House

          The SpaceEach cottage is self contained with a kitchen ,dining table and sofa all in one room which is cosy for 1-4 people .The bedrooms are divided by a hall with a bathroom ,separate toilet in between . Each cottage looks a different way which gives each cottage privacy from each other but all have a wonderful view of the mountains.They are very warm and insulated and all have heaters in each. One cottage has a bunk in the twin room which is suitable for families with 3 children Guest AccessTravellers are free to walk around our property ,we own 5 hectares but come and ask us and we will tell you of a few good walks near us worth doing.You can drive your car right up and park in front of the cottage you are staying in parking is not a problem. Miles and I live in Tophouse the Historical Cob Inn , the cottages are situated just behind the Inn ,you are welcome to come and have a look around and spend a bit of time in our dining room and learn the old days of Tophouse ,it was a bit of a coloured history! We have a Cafe in the dining room in the weekends in the winter and it will be open every day in summer. Interaction with GuestsWe leave guests alone in the cottages but make them aware to come and see us at the house/Inn The NeighborhoodThe Saint Arnaud area is unique for its beautiful Mountain terrain in a protected environment .Tophouse is close to it all! The walks are beautiful and challenging for different fitness's.Visit the "Visitors Centre" run by Department of Conservation " (DOC) and look at the history and all whats to do in the area. There is a mountain bike recreational area called "Tee Total" for different tracks for different stages of fitness,climb Mount Robert and get an amazing view of the lake ,or just walk around the village walking tracks is relaxing and listen to the birds.                       Sleeping 28 people, and with a hall that can be used for social gatherings, the Red Deer Lodge is the perfect place to hire for school, tramping, church, youth or family groups, to celebrate family reunions, weddings or birthdays, or even to hold meetings. Built between 1963 and 1965 by the voluntary labour of the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association, it is still owned and used by them. Initially used a base facility for outdoor sports, it still retains its sporting flavour with its big riverstone fireplace and various trophy heads on the walls.                                 This cosy cottage is nestled in native bush just 5 minutes walk from beautiful Lake Rotoiti, a favorite spot for sailing, fishing, swimming and other watersports. The cottage has a sunroom which looks out to the St Arnaud range close by, rising to 6.000 feet and the lounge a log burner for keeping snug. There is an abundance of short walks and tramps, some of which offer spectacular views. Close by is one of New Zealand?s ?Land Islands?, being an area where intensive predator control has resulted in an abundance of birdlife. For the more energised, the park offers a wide range of tramping experience, ranging from short day trips to expeditions of several days with ample alpine experience for those who want it. There are mountain bike trails, a gliding club, a golf course, and hunting opportunities, all nearby. Lake Rotoiti is close to Rainbow skifield, the Marlborough wine region, and Nelson. It is under 2 hours drive to the Picton ferry, and under three to Westport airport. While we allow pets, please note that these are forbidden from the adjacent National Park. The cottage is ?winterised? from April to October, requiring guests to follow a clearly documented list of instructions on arriving and leaving, for draining the water system.
