Just at the bottom of the street is a wonderful natural food store and downtown is a short 3 miles away. Getting AroundThere is a bus stop on Commercial street about 3 blocks away. However, researching route details will be up to you. Just look up "cherriots" online. There is also local taxi companies to assist in transportation. Other Things to NoteThe neighbor hood is quiet and very safe. Parking is best done on the street directly in front of the house. Many folks have asked about the safety of their belongings, I have never experienced any theft. But of course, if there is anything irreplaceable you are welcome to use my garage for safe keeping.

The SpaceOnly an hour's drive from the Pacific coast, the Cascade mountains, or Portland's many food, brew, literary, hip culture attractions, Salem is easy to get around with plenty of historic buildings, parks and gardens. From the house you can walk to all services you need or stretch out and cross the river on the beautiful pedestrian bridge. The downstairs suite of about 940 sq ft or +/- 100 sq m includes a large, dividable space with queen bed in one half and twin in the other. Bath, kitchen and laundry, den and garden patio complete the spacious, quiet enjoyment indoors and out. Wi-Fi, offstreet parking. Casual family neighborhood with minimal traffic. Walking distance supermarket, bakery, coffee shops, library, restaurants, ice cream shops, etc. Public transit about 5 blocks away. Good spots for reading, many books and info on local sites and history on-hand. Fresh fruit in season. Travelers offered info and tips in English, Spanish, German or French if needed. Guest AccessGuests have access to all spaces within the apartment, the patio, backyard and garage. Interaction with GuestsI always enjoy meeting guests upon arrival if at all possible p, answer questions and let them know they can follow up when they want. Then I usually respect their privacy unless they want more contact. Sometimes we have long conversations or share a glass of wine, while other guests may chat only at the beginning and end of a visit. The NeighborhoodThere are 2 good-sized parks nearby, nice hilly neighborhoods and the ability to walk to most services. After your arrival here, it is not necessary to drive everywhere to enjoy this simple family neighborhood, and the greenness of the area. Getting AroundThe closest bus stop is a 3-minute walk and the west side transit area is about 10 minutes away. Unfortunately, Salem lacks weekend bus service so far. Buses can connect to the train and bus station or to the shuttle for Portland airport. Several trains and buses travel between Portland and Salem daily.

There are regular sightings and sounds of wildlife, mostly birds and deer. We also get raccoon, coyote and other wildlife through the area occasionally. Internet service is DSL and rural (no high speed here, streaming is not always possible) Cellular service is good for most providers. Television has limited to local stations and has a connection for a computer so you may be able to play movies you have on your own computer. The SpaceThis is a 1925 Craftsman home that has stood the test of time. Settled in an older part of Salem, the house has a charm and comfort for most to enjoy. The house sits on a double lot, leaving lots of room to play and enjoy the outside on nice days. We have a front sunporch, a backporch off the kitchen, and a patio outside with a firepit (and PLENTY of wood!) Guest AccessYou have the entire upstairs of the house. You will have access to all three bedrooms although the first room is more of a sitting room with a piano, chair and couch. There are locks to keep the upstairs separate from the basement. Laundry accessibility is in the basement. Interaction with GuestsI may be around during your stay or I may be off traveling to my next exploration destination! Chad, the downstairs tenant will welcome you to the house and make sure you have everything you need. Either of us are available for any questions during your stay. You may also see Chad or others working on his tiny house project in the backyard on nice days. The NeighborhoodI love my neighbors. One helps us fix the cars, another helps us paint, another is an all-around handyman, and the ones on the other side of the hedge...well, they don't like music around a fire past 10pm but they are solid people. The people behind us can get a bit rowdy about one day a month and I see it more as "free entertainment." No worries, a six foot wooden fence separates the areas. Getting AroundPublic buses are close by. It is a 5-8 minute walk to markets and Word of Mouth, 20 minute walk to the grocery store, and 25 minutes to downtown. Bicycles and kayaks available for use with advanced notice. Other Things to NoteWe are in the final stages of a home remodel on the outside of the property. We have learned it is a big project of pulling nails, sanding, and priming and our goal is to complete the painting in July 2016. To fore-warn all those traveling in summer: we are a typical NW house without air conditioning. If the temps exceed 90 degrees, special techniques of shutting Windows in days and opening windows with fans on at night are required to keep house cool. It is well insulated so it does well but multiple days of warm weather can be tough. We have an above ground pool in the backyard to "cool off" on those especially hot days.
