For the price of a motel room, enjoy a cabin on a lake. Great casual summer-fall vacation place for a small family with room for guests. MINIMUM 14 DAY STAY. THOUGH DAILY AND WEEKLY RATES MUST BE SHOWN, WE DO NOT RENT FOR THESE SHORT PERIODS. SEE NOTE BELOW. Great room, master bedroom, and kitchen overlook the lake and dock 35 feet away. Great room has firestove, cozy couch corner, and dining/work table. But most eat sitting on barstools at the kitchen counter... or out on the deck (where, if you sit still the chickadees will eat sunflower seeds out of your hand). The beautiful main lake is a mile across. The landmark "Alvord's Tower" forms a scenic backdrop to your kids swimming off your dock. Boat over to O'Hara's for lunch, refill your skiboat, or buy your bait. Paddle through the lily pond into the 2nd lake, and on down the channel for a good morning's trip. Or find the entrance to the hidden pond where the beaver may still live. Pack a lunch for a trip to One-Tree Island. (Or as the local kids call it, Birdpoop Island.) Note you will be living in the country. There are country critters. Occasionally the lightning knocks out the electricity. Tap water comes from the lake, so order drinking water delivered, or do like we do and go fill the 2 gallon jugs from the town spring in Salisbury. The best testament to how much our renters like it here, most of them have come back more than one season. Five only stopped renting because they bought their own homes on Twin Lakes. NOTES: 14 DAY MINIMUM STAY. Since our place is has a regular tenant from July thru August (already confirmed for 2016), the purpose of this site is to find one or two vacationing tenants for June, September and fall color October. Because of the two week minimum - best plan ahead - rentals, I rely on Flipkey's text message service to be notified of your inquiry. If I don't respond in 6 daytime hours, try inquiring again. Flipkey, as a condition of our service, prohibits email or phone communication until you have paid for the stay. We normally take a 50% deposit to hold the place, with the other 50% due a week or two before you lease begins. We are trying out this service... I realize this arrangement is discouraging. We cater to advance planners. We can afford to because our rates are so reasonable for this wonderful lake. Our place is usually fully rented out for the full summer by April. Small pet considered. Adult over 24 must be present when a person under 20 is. Follow local and Connecticut boating regulations and be a good neighbor to our neighbors. Rural lakefront -- Not suitable for parents who are overly or insufficiently protective of their children. Rural landscape -- Not suitable for those who detest bugs, raccoons, poison ivy, need flat even walkways, or are addicted to reliable cell service. Homestyle cottage -- Not suitable for those wanting a big screen TV, game console and large microwave, updated kitchen with nice tableware, new linens, or current decor. (We strive to maintain our 40's decor.) Order drinking water delivered, or get from the town spring with the jugs provided. See Other Fees section of listing for info on phone, cable TV and internet service. Rental lease required. Once lease is signed, be sure to send in your first payment right away to secure your lease. Nightly and weekly rates are shown for comparison purposes only. WE DON'T RENT BY THE NIGHT, WEEKEND, OR FOR ONE WEEK. Our turn around costs are too high to make short stays worthwhile. We normally rent only full months. At times for various reasons we provide a 14 day, 17 day, or 21 day minimum option, which usually can start or stop on any day of the week you want. Utility Expense Details: -- Jun, Sep, and Oct rates include electricity, propane, DSL internet, and unlimited nation-wide landline phone service. -- Winter and spring rental requires a negotiated utility deposit. -- August & September rentals requires a 250$ utility deposit. -- Cable TV or high-speed internet, drinking water, and trash hauling, are available, but you will need to subscribe to them. Free wifi is available at the nearby libraries and restaurants. Our cottage, lake, parks and towns are a good place to take a vacation from the internet as well as your work.. Cell phone service is variable depending upon your carrier, and where you are standing, and the moment you are calling. Expect Verizon calls to be dropped randomly, but I figure on 5 minutes between drops when standing inside, and 10 minutes when standing outside. I think ATT service is similar. Payment Details: -- Winter and Spring rentals can be paid monthly, but the refundable deposit is 2000$. -- July and August rentals can be paid in two equal payments, with second payment due on arrival. -- June, September and October rentals are paid in full when booking. The diagonal un-availabilities shown on the calendar for the winter months just denotes winter season lease are by special arrangement to prospective tenants who are experienced in rural winter living and can deal with ice storms, heavy snowfalls, power outages, blocked roads, prevent pipes from freezing and creosote from building up in the wood stove flue. Nearby Attractions: - Antiquing galore. Tanglewood Music Center, music festivals, and small concert houses. Musical, Shakespeare and opera theaters. Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. The SpaceThe cabin is Post and Beam built in 2002. Cedar siding, large french doors open to a large back deck with recently completed screened in porch. Master bedroom opens to the covered deck. The porch affords beautiful views of the lake and you can pick wild blueberries right from the porch. Other family cabins are within sight but you will have privacy. Cell phones do not work very well. Solar electric system provides enough electricity for led lights and the refrigerator and charging phones etc. Computer use is discouraged as it uses a lot of power. The master bedroom has a full size bed and there are two twin beds in the second bedroom and two twin beds in the loft. There is hot and cold running water inside the cabin for dishes and an outdoor shower. There is no flush toilet. There is a composting toilet as well as an outhouse 50' away. NOTE-->Make sure you are aware of the bathroom situation before booking. Its rustic but very refined. Guest AccessThe cabin, front yard and private lake access is all yours. Two canoes and kayaks. No guest provided boats or flotation devices allowed. Be aware that as one of my renters stated in a private review --“I think some people will be surprised by just how secluded it is, no cell reception within 5 miles, depending on your service.” I do have a cell phone antenna and amplifier that works in the cabin for most plans. He also stated “It was perfect! Rustic as advertised, but very clean and comfortable. It's off the grid for sure, but the instructions to operate the various amenities were clear enough even for me to follow! Conrad's communication right from the start was extremely helpful in getting us settled in. PS, Great fishing!” “We wanted something secluded and comfortable, it was just what we had hoped for!” NOTE--> In the winter the cabin is often only reachable by a 3.5 mile snowshoe trip. The road is not plowed and only the very hearty should consider a trip before the winter thaw. Interaction with GuestsThe cabin has a combination lock to get to the key. I have a handy man who can help if there is an issue. The NeighborhoodThis is on a private lake with a small number of private cabins. There are other cabins of relatives and my parents on the 4 acre parcel. Getting AroundYou need a car with decent ground clearance for the dirt roads. Other Things to NoteFull linens are provided.
