The SpaceThis home has two levels. The upper level is a modernized open concept floor plan with living room, dining room, gourmet kitchen and powder room. This level features 11' ceilings, original woodwork, wood floors, designer colors, leather furniture, and wool rugs. The living area includes a home theater system with a 3D blu-ray player and a 140" theater screen. (Don't forget your 3D shutter glasses!) The dream kitchen includes seating at a large island, stainless steel appliances, a convection gas stove, European dishwasher, a microwave, a french door refrigerator with ice maker, a waste disposal, acres (slight exaggeration) of quartz counter space, designer tile and slate flooring. It has everything you need to make a home cooked meal, (minus the groceries) -- just in case the dozens of local restaurants don't interest you. There is coffee and tea to get you going in the morning. The lower level large bedroom includes a California King Bed, comfortable bedding, a desk, closet, 24" 1080P TV(currently no cable but a blu-ray dvd player), and a lounge chair. The smaller room has a queen sized bed, shelving, a desk a work chair and a lounge. All rooms are bright and very comfortable. Stay for a couple of nights of vacationing, make this your work off-site or stay for a full month and book this as part of your relocation package for your new job. The lower level bedrooms are very quiet with insulation and double paned windows. Sometimes it's easy to forget you are downtown. There is central heat and Air conditioning, even though San Jose has very steady and mild temperatures. There is a Sony Dream Machine alarm clock radio with ambient noise generators in each bedroom, for any folks not used to the sounds of the city or can't get used to how quiet the place is. Fine furniture and artwork/photographs decorate every room. The house was once a single family dwelling. In the depression of the 1930s, it was split down the middle and made into two units. Unit 3 is a detached carriage house that will be available in early 2016. Between the two units of the main house there are mostly things like bathrooms, closets, the entry/vestibule, as well as double walls of sound insulation. So if someone is playing music, you can hear it a little in either kitchen, but otherwise not, in the other rooms. We are living in the other unit, and we're pretty quiet. A few times a day you might notice the clatter of dog feet rushing to get outside through the vestibule:-) (The vestibule is not over any part of this suite).
Latest upgrades and additions include central Air conditioning, an office chair in the second bedroom, a B&W laser office printer and 3D upgrades to the entertainment (URL HIDDEN) don't forget your 3D shutter glasses and Blu-ray disks! The living room now includes a larger new wool rug. The master bedroom now has light blocking curtains, not shown in photos. Guest AccessThe suite includes a full bath between the two bedrooms with a jetted tub, natural stone, ceramic tiles, and a private laundry. There is also a powder room off the kitchen, and a front deck to people watch and drink your favorite beverage. If movies are your thing, but you don't like going to the theater, bring or rent a 3D blu-ray disc/shutter glasses and watch a movie on the 12' theater screen with 5.0 surround sound. The only areas off limits, are the private residence areas, like the roofed porch on the carriage house. Feel free to sit on the main house front porch or at the backyard table though. The re-landscaped back yard has a dining table, a couple of lounges and is a great place to read a book in the early evening. There is no need to hand-off keys, cards, etc. as the locks have access code (URL HIDDEN) technically, you could arrive in the middle of the night without disturbing anyone. Interaction with GuestsThe suite is very private. The suite has everything you'd expect at your own home, including soft towels, flatware, wine glasses, mugs, a coffee maker, kettle, pots/pans -- even an ironing board for those last minute touch-ups. If you don't want to spend too much time exploring, there is an information book to help you find everything necessary and close by, including grocery stores and restaurants. We want you to be comfortable, enjoy your stay and find what you are looking for. We maintain a hands-off approach to our guests but we live right next door and are always available in case you do need something. Most guests will enjoy the privacy but if you need something, don't hesitate to ask -- we are more than happy to assist you with any issues or concerns, directions, suggestions, etc. The NeighborhoodHorace Mann neighborhood is right next to all the major downtown attractions, including major businesses, banking, shopping, entertainment and more. The neighborhood has a mix of homes, some dating back to the 1860s. This house is a gem in a row of historical Victorian homes and once had a street-car passing along side and then directly in front.
Like any big city, downtown living includes some transient traffic and some big city noises that can be heard in the living areas during the day and sometimes at night. The bedrooms are well insulated and have modern double pane windows. They are always very quiet so sleeping shouldn't be an issue. If you need noise to fall asleep, just open a window or make use of the white noise generator selection built into each alarm clock. Getting AroundThere are city buses within the block and VTA light rail service only 5 blocks away. City hall is two blocks away, 2 major grocery stores within 2 blocks, Japantown is 4 blocks away, movie theaters and additional shopping only 7 blocks away. In other words, this house is located perfectly for on-foot exploring without the need for a car. If you have time to get to the outdoors, there are many local parks minutes away by foot or by car. The San Jose Convention Center is 1.2 flat walking miles away.
**Note: If you are driving, please pre-arrange for a parking permit to be left for you. Because of our close proximity to downtown and San Jose state University, permit parking is enforced Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM till 6:00 PM. If you have a small car, you can park it in an off-street spot but will need to pre-arrange for a gate remote control. If you are driving something larger, let us know to leave you a street parking permit. Other Things to NoteGreat trouble has been made to restore the house exterior to it's original splendor in 7 period colors. It's a great example of "Stick" style Victorian Architecture and got it's Landmark status for it's historic Architectural significance. There are classic interior details too, without compromising on comfort and modern conveniences.
*Please note that this structure is over 125 years old. As wonderful as that is, the likelihood of there still being some painted surfaces that include lead, are high. If there is lead paint, it would be under several newer layers of paint on doors, and on door and window moldings. So, if you, or a family member, like to bite chunks out of window moldings, etc., know that it's not in your best health interest to do so. Any structure, older than 25 years, is highly likely to include lead painted surfaces...not just this old house.
ELECTRICAL: The USA uses a household standard electrical plug (two flat pins and sometimes a third round "ground" pin) that is 60hz and 110-120 Volts. Many computers and other electronics will automatically adjust for different worldwide standards but please make sure to bring necessary plug/prong adapters and voltage converters, if traveling from other countries. All outlets are updated with 3-prong ground and GFI (ground fault interrupters) in the bathrooms and in the kitchen. As required, some other room circuits may have arc fault circuits.
San Jose water in our area comes from ground sources and is drinkable. The house is equipped with a potassium based water softener system to help your skin and hair health. We find the water also tastes better.
Central heat/air conditioning and a 50-gallon hot water heater are dedicated for this (URL HIDDEN) sharing of a thermostat or mysteriously empty hot water tank. The shower is also "pressure balanced" to avoid scalding and freezing when someone turns on a faucet or flushes a toilet.
