There may be times that you can order from the Villa Fauna Vegan menu (breakfast, drinks, lite fare, dinner options) if you so desire. Interaction with GuestsWe totally respect your privacy and desire to go at it alone, but it you'd like, we offer our own personal tour guide, information, details, and advice (from us, locals) on tours (what to expect, what to bring and wear, length of time, prices, reservations), restaurants, beaches (whether you want a white sand or dark sand beach, waves or calm water, isolated or with restaurants/bars/shops, instructions for free access), help with directions, explanation about U.S. dollar and colones exchange, where to purchase items that you may need in San Mateo or Orotina, and answering any questions that you may have throughout your stay. The NeighborhoodWe are located on a tropical mountain in the Central Valley (known for it's spring time weather all year round), which has spectacular views, much cooler temperatures and lower humidity at our elevation (1,500 ft), lovely breezes, tico farms and forest, and fresh spring water. At mid day, temperatures are usually around 78-88 degrees, and at night, temperatures dip down into the mid 60s. On a breezy night, you may want a light jacket or to enjoy the fire pit.
The mountain of Maderal offers a safe and quiet environment. We have a private road, which only our vehicles travel down, and if you walk to the main road, it gives way to a long, beautiful walk, passing by horses and Brahman cattle.
We are just a few minutes from the fruit capital of Costa Rica, Orotina, and its restaurants, farmers’ markets, and stores, 15 minutes from Turu Ba Ri Eco-Adventure Park (fantastic zip lining, canopy tour, nature tours/hiking, hanging bridges, and skytram), 20 minutes from swimmable waterfalls, 30-45 minutes from several Pacific beaches (Punta Leona, Herradura, and Jaco), and 40 minutes from the SJO airport. We have created a tour guide which we can make available to you so that you may choose tours, and know what to expect for each one. Getting AroundWhen you first arrive, we offer a meeting place in Orotina (about 10 minutes away) so that you can follow us to Villa Fauna (no cost). We strongly suggest renting a GPS along with your car rental, in order to locate points of interest, as Costa Rica’s locations usually do not have actual addresses. Car rental in Costa Rica can be very pricey. The estimate you receive online for your car rental will seem very low compared to what it will be with the add-on coverage. If you are on a budget, we have an extra vehicle that can be available to you, on a daily basis. Prices and options will be discussed if you inquire with interest. If you’d prefer for us to meet you at your car rental company by the airport, or if you will be renting our guest vehicle (Suzuki Sidekick) and need a pickup and drop off to/from the airport, the cost will be $40 each trip.
Taxis drive up the mountain and can take you into the towns of San Mateo and Orotina, where there are bus routes. You could walk to town, it is about a 3 km walk, mostly downhill. We also have a tour book and contact information for a Tour and Taxi Company that we have personally used. Other Things to NoteIf you are interested in short term renting, of less than 10 days, please ask us about our Bed & Breakfast, Villa Fauna.
When you arrive, we can meet you in town (a store which will show up as a location on your GPS or where a taxi can drop you off) so that you can take you up the small mountain to Villa Fauna and its cabina, free of charge. We will give you a tour, information, and answer questions.
We ask that you understand that we will be tending to our short term guests of Villa Fauna (Vegan Bed & Breakfast), who will be staying in the main Villa (about 15 meters from the cabina). You may see our B&B guests on the Villa veranda, pool/rancho, fire pit, or trails. We hope that you will be courteous to these guests and consider that their stay is most probably shorter than yours and we try to make the most of their time here. The property is quite large (2.75 acres), guests will be coming and going for trips and tours, and since everyone is here just trying to have a good time, I am sure we can all co-exist together.
We also want to be honest with our guests. We do not recommend planning your vacation from September 15th - November 15th. During this time, there is strong rain or thunderstorms almost every afternoon, evening, and/or night. Please inquire if you have any questions about which time of the year is best suited for your party.
