The NeighborhoodKawau Island is very unique in that there are no roads or cars on the island, apart from two small roads in Schoolhouse Bay and South Cove. The remainder of the island is accessed by boat and jetties plus walking tracks along the bush line. The island is famous for Sir George Gray's mansion located around in Mansion House Bay and this area is administered by the Department of Conservation. There is a cafe located in the Mansion House grounds, open during summer hours. There is also the Kawau Boat Club located in Bon Accord harbour, great place to visit and at Vivian Bay there is The Beach House where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner - need to book. Getting AroundGetting to Kawau Island is via Sandspit, located one hour north of the Auckland harbour bridge and from here you can take a ferry, water taxi or perhaps your own boat out to the island. If you are a visitor to New Zealand, the Intercity bus or Naked Bus brings you to Warkworth and then you need to take a taxi out to Sandspit jetty, alternatively you can hire a car and there is secure parking at Sandspit, costs $10 per 24 hour period or parking for free up Brick Bay Drive, located close by. Once out on the island, walking is the best means of getting around, or taking a water taxi bay hop around to the different bays can be organised. Other Things to NoteKawau Lodge is located on an island in the Hauraki Gulf, no roads, no cars. Guests will need to arrange their transportation to the island by contacting the owners and we will arrange for a water taxi or shuttle to take you to the lodge. We also have our own boat, so depending on timing we may be able to personally collect you from Sandspit Jetty. If you wish to bring your own boat, we can arrange for a mooring to be available. Pickup and drop off at the all tide jetty is available.
