The SpaceThe 50' Chris Craft, GiaMaria, is a hybrid idea turned reality that came into my mind as I was exploring a way to provide an adventure for guests at a reasonable price, even for those who would be staying aboard only for one night. And so, I built the boat so that looking at the stars and hearing a Hoot Owl from the upper deck, would in my opinion beat hands down watching another dumbed down TV program. Also, my plan was for the GiaMaria to offer a total living space, where you can cook a full gourmet meal and dance in the main saloon. She is not just a room where you don't know who is in the next room to you, but a safe and quiet place where you can relax, stay warm or cool depending on the seasons and still get away from that "beaten path." For all practicable purposes, you will be experiencing living in a "tiny house" while living aboard a very nice boat, but it won't feel like it because the Giamaria is really quite roomy. So, if you have ever wondered what living in a less space, or what living in a houseboat would be like, then this is for you. Because you get not only a great place to enjoy your stay, but you get to experience both life styles. This vessel is a great addition to the greater Richmond area too because of her unique location, and also her close proximity to the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial heights. And something else that is unique has to do with me, your host. And that is, I am the longest surviving USCG licensed James River tugboat captain, and in my retirement years in addition to building and offering the Giamaria, I became an amateur historian, writer, and a lover of the hundreds of species of wildlife in our area. Even where the GiaMaria is berthed it is unique, because she is moored alongside a private dock, and in a remote oxbow of the James River where commercial vessels don't rock and roll us, or scare our game, or destroy our beautiful shorelines. In truth, we are remote without being remote because we are only seven miles from the Capital of Virginia. Yet the only approach to the Richmond Yacht Basin other than by water (or helicopter) is through the beautiful, scenic, and well kept Richmond National Battlefield Park. It is an area where many species of wildlife live and can appear at any time or place along the roadway, so please be careful when driving. The road which is about a mile long has a speed limit of 25 MPH and follows earthworks that were hand dug by Union soldiers during the Civil War . At the end of the road and straight ahead, a walking path will lead you to Fort Brady (named for Matthew Brady the celebrated Civil War Photographer) which overlooks the James River. It is a magical spot well worth every minute you will spend there. And only a few yards away and to your right is a coded gate that secures a couple of beautiful farms and the marina entrance. As you descend the hill, the sign reads 41/2 miles per hour. It is not just to control speed, but because we want you to take a moment and enjoy the beautiful view and the historic space that you are entering as you approach the marina. The GiaMaria is only a 50' long Houseboat, but what has surprised every single guest that has stayed aboard, is how roomy and comfortable she is. As her owner and someone who has spent a lifetime on boats, I very well know how charming but uncomfortable some boats can be no matter their size. And so, my number one goal as I set out to redesign and rebuild this vessel was to make it as comfortable as your home, and also highly functional. And if what my guests have had to say about it is true, then I did accomplish this goal. And not only did I want to build in easy living, but my plan also included locating the GiaMaria in a safe, seclude and picturesque marina. I therefore chose Richmond Yacht Basin to be her new home. It is a place where my guests would have an opportunity to cruise, fish, play or stay aboard in one of the most beautiful settings to be found in Eastern Virginia. It is not the kind of marina where all boats are necessarily stacked one beside the other, or where deck shoes are required, but a place with lots of local color because of the people who inhabit the marina, the working boatyard and the wilderness just across the river. Richmond Yacht Basin, a place that I have come to cherish, is a small, quiet and cozy family owned jewel, and it is only 15 minutes or less from downtown Richmond by way of (Osborne Turnpike) an old country road. The road itself is also unique because as you reach a point on a hill just before entering Richmond you will experience a beautiful view of the downtown, yet you will still be traveling past a well kept farm. But back at the marina and within walking/jogging/cycling distance there is the Richmond National Battlefield Park, a magnificent Henrico County owned park at Osborne Landing with a Bass Master's Classic landing for launching boats and a separate kayak/canoe launch dock and a wonderful playground for children complete with toilet facilities. And it is all free. We are also adjacent to one of the busiest and most scenic bike trails anywhere in Virginia (The Virginia Capital Trail which runs from Richmond to Williamsburg) and on any given weekend hundreds of cyclists peddle through the park near the marina or on the trail as individuals, couples or on club outings. The historic James River will be your "front yard" where sea going tugs and ships travel sometimes on a daily basis, but of course not through "our front yard". The GiaMaria rests in only four feet of water at dockside, and it is protected from storms by a wild and beautiful island on the opposite shore. And if you like history, there is no spot in the entire United States that can offer so much in such a small space. You will be onsite where Powhatan and his daughter Pocahontas spent much of their lives at Arrohateck, as did her husband John Rolfe. And just around the river's bend you can experience Henricus Park (named for Prince Henry, the eldest son of King James I) and the second English Virginia settlement in America. Henricus is a re-created historical adventure park that is well worth visiting and it is similar in many ways to the Jamestown Historical Park. Our area is also the place where Benedict Arnold sank our Colonial fleet as it rested on anchor almost within sight of our marina once our patriots had declared war on England in order to gain our independence. And just up the road in Church Hill, Patrick Henry gave his famous "give me liberty or give me death" speech. Civil War battles were fought here on Chafin's farm while Union Ironclads like the Monitor and Galena fought unsuccessfully while trying to pass Drewery's Bluff (the confederate naval academy) and hoping to subdue the confederate General Robert E. Lee. Think names like Captain John Smith( Jamestown), Patrick Henry( "Give me liberty or give me death") and US Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John Tyler and William Henry Harrison. Peter Jefferson(Thomas' father) lived here before moving to Monticello in the Albermarle as did the 4th Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall. Generals during the Revolutionary War, like Washington (American), LaFayette (French), Arnold and Cornwallis (English), and Kosciuszko (Polish), Washington's "accomplished military architect" as well as Civil War Generals like Grant and Lee were also here. All of these giants spent considerable time here or lived here as did many other well known personalities throughout our history. In modern times people like the Honorable Governor of Virginia, L. Douglas Wilder, grew up and lived just down the road in Churchill and became the first black governor of Virginia and in the United States. And the late and much loved singer Jimmy Dean chose his wife, his yacht, (The Big Bad John), and this area as his playground and also to make it his home. Fortunately for us today, Jimmy Dean's beautiful widow and well known singer, Donna Meade Dean Stevens has been very successful in her own right while reviving The Old Dominion Barn Dance, a Virginia Treasure that was broadcast in the 40's and 50's throughout much of the country and even worldwide to our servicemen and women who were serving overseas during those years. But the area is not all about famous people and events. Wildlife abounds here. Bald Eagles nest just across the channel as do Great Blue Herons, Little Green Herons and Ospreys among many other birds and land creatures. And Osborne Landing which is only a mile away has become a sports person's paradise. Whether it is fishing, hunting, skiing, paddle boarding, canoeing, canoe sailing, small boat sailing, kayaking, playing on personal watercraft, hiking the beautiful and well planned paths that will take you down by the riverside, checking out the battlefields, hunting for relics or what ever suits your fancy, you will find it here. In fact, there is only one word to describe the docking spot that the GiaMaria enjoys, and that word is UNIQUE. One more thing. I understand that anything is possible, but our area is UNIQUE in another way too. We have not suffered from many serious storms, earthquakes, fires, droughts or blizzards as do other parts of the US. We experience the four seasons, and it would be very unusual for any one season to have severe weather that would last more than a few days at a time. We truly are blessed to live in such a beautiful historic countryside that is laced with meandering back roads that cut through ancient forest or small well kept farms and villages. So..., what are you waiting for? Come and take the weight off and absorb the excitement (or the solitude) that the Crossroads of North American History has to offer. Guest AccessIf you want to bring your personal fishing gear, bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, etc., there is plenty of room on board the GiaMaria for them. One of the latest and very exciting recent developments surrounding Richmond Yacht Basin is that the Richmond National Battlefield Park bike route now has a direct link to the Virginia Capital Trail. This newly opened hard surfaced cycling/walking/running path covers more than 50 miles between Richmond, the capital of Virginia and the ancient colonial capitals of Jamestown and Williamsburg. As you will see, our area is truly a place where you can have it all. Interaction with GuestsSomeone will be within minutes of you should you need assistance. But, we also respect your privacy just as we would any neighbor. The NeighborhoodWhether you just want to stay aboard and enjoy the boat, or experience all the area has to offer, we can help you find your way. There are wonderful upscale restaurants with great views of both the river and the city in Churchill Hill, Shockoe Slip,("the bottom") or Rocketts Landing. Restaurants such as Millie's, The Tobacco Company, Conch Republic or The Boat House are all only minutes from the GiaMaria. But we also have ( kinda/sorta) in our backyard, the "Lilly Pad". Actually it is next door to Osborne landing. It is a great little spot along the shore where you can have a relaxed evening with locals over a beer or a delicious meal, and sometimes they have live music, but it is like that proverbial box of chocolates, "you never know what you're gonna get". Richmond also has great museums, sporting events, Class III and class IV whitewater rafting that will carry you right through the city. There are also numerous theaters, places of worship, colleges and universities. County and National parks are all around us, and only a short drive up or down the road is Petersburg, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, Jamestown, or Yorktown as well as Bush Gardens, Kings Dominion and outlet malls. In fact, there is so much to see and do here in our area, that it would require a team to put it all together in tour guide format. There is truly something here for everyone, and we can help you find it. Getting AroundDriving? You will park in a free secured lighted area with lighted docks during your entire stay. Richmond has two train stations and an airport which is only fifteen minutes away. We are four miles from route five (a Virgina Scenic by-Way), five and a half miles from I-295 and five miles from I-95. Richmond in my opinion is the easiest city on the east coast to get around in. We have multiple freeways going in all directions and even through the middle of the city. And monument Avenue in the center of Richmond is the only avenue in the United States that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, Monument Avenue was named one of the 10 Great Streets in the country, by the American Planning Association. Note: It is worth reading on Wikipedia about this great street and the events that occur there each year. And ladies, bring your most outlandish bonnet if you plan to be here during Easter. Want an "in place" to do some chic shopping, then don't miss Carytown on Cary Street. It is just a few blocks south of and parallel to Monument Ave. Other Things to NoteI am a native Virginian who has spent most of my life living and working on or along the James River and at a very young age, I developed a love of our area, our people, and our history, and I will be glad to share what I know with my guests. This 50' vessel has been recently re- built for easy living. Inside it is very much like a small condo, while outside it is very much a boat. It has a large upper sun deck and a lower shaded bow deck and a Magma grill for outdoor cooking. The bath is mostly ceramic and large, with a full sized vanity with a large mirror, great lighting/outlets, and hot and cold pressurized water. It is also equipped with a U. S. Coast Guard approved state of the art electric toilet and sanitation system and outside connected exhaust fans. The galley is complete and very functional. It has most anything that you would expect in a modern kitchen. The main salon is huge for a boat this size. It has a queen sleeper sofa, TV, stereo, arm chair, tables, lamps and a high top dining table that seats four. Large windows are found in every room including the bathroom. The floor is wooden and perfect for a romantic dance. Depending on the season, there is heat or air conditioning. The Master's quarters contain a CLEAN 11" Sleep Innovations memory foamed mattress and quality linens. There are drawers and a closet space, lamps, a 7' window and carpeted floors. Note: This is a very well decorated and colorful boat with mementos and photos of my 50 plus years as a commercial tugboat owner/captain on the James River. In fact, I am the last surviving James River USCG licensed Master Captain from the days when tugboats, barges, and some ships were still wooden. Because I am new to this site I have no reviews as yet. However, I celebrate five star reviews on other such sites. The neighborhood has wonderful paved and wooded trails for hiking, biking, or walking. There is a new 52 mile beautiful paved trail alongside route #5 (a Virginia By-way) that connects Williamsburg with Richmond. Numerous parks are in the area as are churches, synagogues, mosques, museums, sporting events, world renowned hospitals and universities, great restaurants, breweries, night clubs, Broadway shows and musicals, working plantations, shopping centers and almost unlimited historical sites. In addition, you are only about 2 hours drive from either Charlottesville, Washington, Virginia Beach, Skyline Drive in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Petersburg is almost in your back door. If you cannot find something of interest here then...

The GiaMaria is not a vessel with bunks. She has been carefully designed to have all of the inside comforts that you would expect in a small well equipped condo, yet she has retained everything outside that you would expect on a 50' vessel. She is unique in her own right. As a captain who spent his life on boats, as did my father, it became my passion to build a vessel that would allow me to feel like it is a home and a boat at the same time. Therefore, I personally re-built this vessel, including most of the tables, bed, bath, galley and salon. I also personally decorated it with some of my private collection and the use of vibrant colors. Then I picked a wonderful setting for her to have as a home and where I would know my guests would be happy and safe. Yet I also wanted her to be near our capital city while still being in the country. And I was lucky enough to have achieved those goals. Our area is special. It is a wonderful and beautiful historic area where you really can have it all. And as of this writing, there is nothing else like it. So come and enjoy!

The james River can be an awesome place to spend your time during winter months, weather permitting. So I am offering my guests who want to experience a winter on the river, a weather related full booking refund, less Homeaway fees. Here is how it works. You tell me what would be unacceptable to you weather wise, and if the forecast calls for that inclement weather to occur, then I will honor even on the day of your intended arrival a full refund. And I will be happy to help you find other suitable accommodations. Unlike some small enterprises we are not all about the money, we really do want our guests to enjoy their stay while aboard the GiaMaria. As for the vessel, she is a 46' Chris Craft Houseboat that has been completely remodeled inside and out in order to give our guests a home like atmosphere without losing the feel of being on an old riverboat. It is modern in every sense of the word. It has been reconstructed to have a large bathroom with a full sized vanity, a 4' designer shower, ventilator fans, and its own USCG certified sanitation system. It comes complete with a queen eleven inch memory foam mattress (Sleep Innovations) and high quality bedding, a small but complete galley and a large salon for relaxing. Outside you will find a very large upper deck for morning coffee or sunning that offers great views and a lower covered bow deck. See attached pictures. But it is not just the GiaMaria that you will enjoy. It is also about her unique location. The Richmond Yacht Basin is a gated facility for members and guests, yet there is nothing stuffy about it, and it is only 9 country road miles from downtown Richmond. It also has the distinction of being the oldest marina on the James River and its setting cannot be duplicated because it is surrounded by a beautiful island, the Richmond National Battlefield Park and a well kept privately owned farm. It is also only one mile from Osborne Landing, a county owned facility including a new fishing pier, a Bass Master's boat launch, great walking trails along the river, canoe and kayak launch ramps, pavilions for picnics/cookouts, bathrooms and wonderful playgrounds for kids, and it is always kept in tip-top shape, and yet it is all free to the public. As you approach the marina after a beautiful canopied drive thru the Richmond National Battlefield Park, you will look through very old trees to the marina and river below. You will be on sacred ground from the minute you enter the park because it is a land where so many people and events shaped our nation's history. Some of the historical characters who lived in the nearby Indian settlement of Arrohateck included Chief Powhatan's son, Tanx or (Parahunt) and Pocahontas his daughter, who married her English born husband John Rolfe. Pocahontas and John Rolfe after marriage made their home here as well, and with the aid of many nameless slaves, (black, Indian and white) they saved Jamestown and the first English colonists by producing a type of "Varina" tobacco that would have tremendous economic value in many European countries. It is a spot where Captain John Smith found his "sweet water" during his explorations of the "wilderness" and in later years of sail the area surrounding those springs became a local stop over known as "Sailor's Tavern". People like George Washington, Patrick Henry, Abraham Lincoln, Anne Hill Carter, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Marshall, Susannah Bowling, the Marquis de Layfayette, Benedict Arnold, Gen. Cornwallis and many other great men and women passed thru this oxbow in the James River on their way to transform our nation. Battles on land and in the river were fought here too, during both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. For example, Benedict Arnold sank the Colonial Fleet in January 1781 before burning Richmond within eye site of the GiaMaria during the Revolutionary War with England. And Union Ironclads like the Monitor and Galena fought other Ironclads like the South's CSS Virginia while trying to pass Drewery's Bluff, the confederate "Annapolis" in order to subdue Richmond, but that never happened. And Just around the river's bend east of Richmond Yacht Basin is Henricus, the London Company's second settlement after Jamestown in the New World. Unfortunately the original "citie" was destroyed by Opechancanough, Chief Powhatan's successor "brother" during the Indian massacre of 1622. Today however it is a thriving reconstruction of what it was like in the days of Sir Thomas Dale's early 1600's "town", and many of my guests who have visited there say it is on par with Jamestown. And just down the road heading east along Route 5 (our Virginia Bi-Way) are plantations like Shirley, still owned and operated by the same family since its beginning in 1613, Berkley, where Taps was first composed and played, and where the first Thanksgiving was held, (probably no turkey included). Westover, the home of President William Henry Harrison (Ole' Tippecanoe), Sherwood Forrest, the home of President John Tyler ("His Accidency") and Evergreen, the birthplace of Edmund Ruffin, who is considered to be the father of modern agriculture and the southern firebrand who is credited with firing the shot that began the Civil War lived nearby too. And these are just a few of the historical events or attractions to be found within a few minutes of the docking space of the GiaMaria, and we haven't even touched on the historical attractions going west on Route 5 into Richmond such as St John's Episcopal Church where Patrick Henry told the King of England, to go to hell, OOPS! I meant to say, "give me liberty or give me death", or Hollywood Cemetery where a great many historical figures are buried like the Presidents Monroe and Tyler a Confererate favorite, JEB Stuart. Within minutes too, if you are Civil War buff, then you are in luck because you will be set squarely in the middle of where the Battle of the Crater took place, as did Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, White Oak Swamp, Deep Bottom, Chaffin's Farm, Pamplin Historical Park and City Point (Gen. Grants headquarters during the siege of Petersburg) among many other well known and not so well known battle sites and fortifications. Much about our old and dusty beginnings causes us to be proud and at the same time ashamed of it, but because of the lessons learned from our past, the Richmond area today has become a bright and shiny area said to be set like Rome on seven hills. For example, there are many and varied museums, river rapids to be enjoyed by those brave enough to take the plunge, sports events of every kind, major universities and hospitals like Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia, world class car races (Richmond International Raceway )and cycling (the UCI world championship 2015) as well as the Richmond Marathon (rated the 18th largest in the nation). There are also restaurants galore from local favorites to world class dining. Richmond is fast becoming a gourmets delight and the Craft Brewery Capital of the South. Chic shopping districts like Carytown, River Road, Short Pump or Stoney Point are all within a short distance, as are outlet malls and several large shopping centers. Watersports and tours of many kinds are offered in several nearby places. Major garden tours (voted one of the best in the country) like Lewis-Ginter Botanical Gardens or Maymont Park as well as national, state and local parks are all within minutes of the GiaMaria. And in one to two hours by car you can be in the Blue Ridge Mountains or Charlottesville or Virginia Beach or Washington, DC, or Williamsburg or Jamestown, or Yorktown, or Petersburg, or Kings Dominion, or Busch Gardens, and several major outlet malls. We even now enjoy the Virginia Capital Trail. It is a cycling/walking, running hard surfaced path of 52 miles between Richmond, the Capital of Virginia, and the colonial capitals of Williamsburg and Jamestown. And all of this is only a sampling of what you will find within a stones throw of the GiaMaria. The area though is also a wildlife lover's delight. There are many native species of plants and animals such as rare Lady Slippers, Bald Eagles, ancient swamps of Cypress and Junipers, Running Cedar, and Song Birds galore. There are Foxes, both red and silver, and occasional Bobcats, beavers and otters. We are also a flyway for many species of animals, such as Butterflies, Ducks, Geese, Humming Birds, Robins, Northern Bald Eagles, and fishes spawning in the spring such as Striped Bass, American and Hickory Shad, eels, and in the fall the ancient Sturgeons that jump out of the water weighing more than 500 pounds. And if you like fishing, we have both Large and Small Mouth Bass, several species of Catfish, record sized Crappie and several local guides will guarantee that you will catch a catfish of 40 pounds or more during late fall and throughout the winter. And on a totally different note, if dancing is your thing, then the tobacco company is just down the road where you can party late into the night or we can hook you up with a lively Argentine Tango group for some lessons or a Milonga. One thing is for sure concerning our area, you will not be hard pressed to find something of interest to fill your time, because it is all here. So..., come and join the fun. You can relax on the water or go out and explore our wonderful slice of the good ole USA.
