Adorable bungalow with swimming pool
Set in a beautiful garden, right next to the swimming pool, our chalet-style bungalow is the perfect choice for those who love being surrounded by nature and being close to the sea. The air-conditioned bedroom and the power shower and whirlpool bath do wonders to relax your body and reboot your energies.
The bungalow is entirely independent from our house, at the other end of the garden, but within the same property.
The property is generously proportioned and the bungalow’s discrete position offers both intimacy and privacy.
Privacy from the road and neighbours is guaranteed by hedged fences and walls on three sides. On the fourth side we have no neighbours, which makes our property feel part of a very large area. The garden is mature with a pleasing mix of trees, bushes, forest floor plants and flowers. The swimming pool is set straight into the lawn and its generously large shower is surrounded by flowering climbing plants. There is a pleasant breeze through the trees and you can always find a fresh spot in the garden, with shade if need be.
The view from the chalet is beautiful (as indeed it is from anywhere on the property), with a great deal of greenery against a backdrop of forested hills and the chalet itself is a delight: it’s comfortable, cosy and welcoming.
The wooden floor is pleasant underfoot, even in winter, and the generous number of windows (there are five in the sitting room alone) allow the air to circulate freely and give the bungalow’s occupants the sensation that they are part of the garden, integrated with nature.
The sitting room and kitchen are open plan and offer a view of the garden. They are equipped with sink and drainer, a cooker, a mini-bar/mini-fridge, a microwave oven and the basic utensils necessary to use them, plus tables and chairs.
In the bedroom there is a double bed, an air conditioner, a conventional fan and a wardrobe and one large window plus a second door that opens out onto the garden.
There is a fantastic power shower and a whirlpool bath in the bathroom, both gas heated and pressurized.
We provide sheets, bedspreads, pillows and pillow cases and one bath towel and one hand towel per guest.
The bungalow has a small deck running around two sides with a hammock plus a table and chairs that can be used for meals al fresco.
This is a very romantic space that is perfect for a couple, but if necessary, there is space for a third person to sleep in the sitting room.
Guest AccessGuests may take advantage of the garden, the swimming pool and garden shower, and also the garden furniture - chairs, sun loungers, tables and parasol - and we can lend guests a portable barbecue with grill and spits.
We also provide internet free of charge (both via WiFi and ethernet cable, if required).
Interaction with GuestsWe are a relaxed, home-loving couple who get up early and go to bed early too. I am Brazilian and my husband is English. We are both freelance language professionals. We have been together for 17 years and have been living at this property since 2001. We like travelling, having friends over, cooking and reading. Our hobbies are gardening and DIY and we like to spend our time enjoying our house and garden. We are sociable and are happy to swap ideas and to provide tips and advice about the island and our neighbourhood. We are happy to chat over a beer in the garden (in Portuguese, English, Spanish or Italian), as long as we do not have work commitments. We enjoy our privacy and we kindly ask guests not to come into our own house without being invited. The NeighborhoodWe live in Rio Vermelho, on the east coast of the island, close to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The neighbourhood is semi-rural and calm, with a good range of services, such as supermarkets, filling stations, restaurants, bars, pharmacies/chemists and fruit and vegetable shops.
The island is fairly crowded during high season, in particular at New Year and during Carnival, but Rio Vermelho is in a very strategic location for avoiding the queues. It is possible to visit the beaches and resorts in the North or the South without becoming stuck in traffic as long as you choose the right times. We are in an excellent position from which to explore the island in any direction.
If all you want is relaxation, there’s no need to leave Rio Vermelho. If you want to mix with a more lively crowd, visits to Jurerê and Brava to the North or Mole and Lagoa to the South are the order of the day.
Our local beach is called Moçambique and because it is part of a nature reserve it is free from any type of building. It is beautiful and wild. During the high season locals sell snacks and drinks from cars and cool boxes. Moçambique is a surfers’ beach with powerful waves and the sea can be rough.
There are several trails from close to our property across the dunes to Moçambique beach, but we generally go by car so we can take chairs and parasols. It takes less than 10 minutes. About 5 minutes further down the same road is Barra da Lagoa, which is a good beach for walking and is protected from the South wind.
Next is Mole beach. This is where the low-key beautiful people meet. With its bars, beach clubs and adventure sports it´s a favourite with the healthy crowd and the gay community.
It is about 20 minutes to Mole beach from our property and about 30 to Lagoa da Conceição.
In the opposite direction, to the North, the closest beach is Ingleses, which leads to Santinho beach where the famous Costão do Santinho resort is located.
Leaving Ingleses in the opposite direction from the Costão resort there is a right turn to Cachoeira and Brava. Straight on leads to Canasvieiras beach, followed by Jurerê and Daniela, at the north tip of the island. The trip to Jurerê takes about 20 minutes. The same highway also returns to the city centre, which takes another 30 minutes.
Our part of the island offers activities for all types of tastes! Visitors can surf, sail, dive with snorkel or scuba, walk the trails, go for a horse ride on the beach at full moon, go on a cycling tour, observe the flora and fauna, keep up with their Pilates, gym or yoga workouts or have a massage and we even have the only golf course on the island less than a mile from here. Of course our guests can always just lie on the beach or by the side of our pool doing nothing!
Getting AroundThere are bus services in both directions (north and south) and also to the city centre, but people tend to complain about their frequency. Unless guests intend to stay close by, using the local beaches and getting around on foot, it is a very good idea to hire a car or scooter for at least part of your stay. Actually, we strongly recommend that you do so.
The island is large and has a great deal to offer, but beaches and tourist sites are generally from five to ten miles apart.
Vehicles can be parked within the property, which is fenced/walled. If you’re coming to our place from the airport or bus stations we recommend taking a taxi (or hiring a car straight away, of course) or you ask us to arrange a transfer in advance.
Other Things to NoteThe whirlpool bath in the bungalow is set into the floor of the bathroom and so people with mobility issues may find it difficult, or even impossible, depending on their restrictions, to get in and out of it.
