The SpaceThis is a lovely getaway home with a lot of charm less than 10 minutes of easy walk to Warren Dunes State Park, which has incredible white beaches and sand dunes. Atop the dunes, there are breathtaking views of the water and surrounding forestry. There are many bike tracks available for the biking enthusiast, and a nearby farmer's market. The house has 3 bedrooms 2 full bathrooms, a powder room on the first floor and another shower in the basement. There are two living room areas - one inside the house, and one outdoor seating area (covered) that has a couch and extra chairs. In the fully finished basement, there is an office area and 2 additional twin beds. In total, there are 6 beds that can fit 8 adults, and 2 additional couches to sleep on. The house is surrounded by wood that provides great privacy. A 36x18 feet private pool with an outdoor hot tub that seats 6 adults comfortably is located in the backyard. There are outdoor speakers that are great for entertaining. Surrounding the pool, there are several cabanas/beds for tanning, and the light hits the pool area perfectly! Guest AccessGuest will have access to all bedrooms/rooms on the property, and the pool (during summer season) Interaction with GuestsI will not be present during your stay (and will not be available to answer questions or respond to requests), but have a housekeeper and pool maintenance guy who will welcome you to the house and be available as needed. The SpaceThis is a vintage home in rehab was completed in spring 2014, featuring a bedroom/study upstairs, a huge master bedroom downstairs with sitting area and desk, an equally huge bathroom the size of an ocean liner cabin with a very high level of finish featuring rubbed bronze fixtures, copper sink, tumbled granite mosaic floor (see the photos). The kitchen has chopping block and granite counters along with a granite island with bar stools. The living room features leather furniture arranged about a large fireplace (original to the house) with wall woodwork about the stair leading upstairs. Flat screen with DirectTV. The dining area is in a sunroom with a pass-through opening to the kitchen. An odd transitional central room off the foyer now features a bumper pool table for your amusement (yes, they still exist!); French doors lead from the area to the huge master bedroom. Off the kitchen is a breakfast nook sitting area leading to the back patio protected by a 10' overhang with a new gas grill. The backyard itself features a sunken fire pit with an old tree stump wrapped around it and "cornhole" set up further back along a hibiscus grove. The view is seemingly endless into woods as there are no other houses, as the vista looks up the heavily wood rail right-of-way. The neighbor immediately to the east across the wooded tracks is undoubtedly the number 1 attraction besides the lake: Greenbush Brewery. The tracks...Amtrack runs by around three times a day (but for a total of 3 seconds at a time) while freight trains come by twice or so and last 2 to 3 minutes. If you can handle the train crossings for around a total of 10 minutes of your day (and this same rail line runs through New Buffalo, etc., so no real way to totally avoid it), then you will love being here...I think of the train as part of the "charm" of small town America. Guest AccessThe whole house is yours. Check in is anytime after 2PM; check-out is by noon, but please feel free to leave your car(s) in the drive if you are staying around town for lunch (e.g., next door at the brewery); if you need to make different arrangements for check-in/out, please explain that in inquiry. Interaction with GuestsI live 1 hour and 15 minutes away in Chicago but good friends of mine, a couple, live just down the street that can help out with any pressing needs. The NeighborhoodSawyer is a little hamlet of less than 10 century-old commercial buildings, 1 mile from Lake Michigan. The 250' tall dunes of Warren Dunes State Park is 1.25 miles to the NW as the crow flies, but for a more relaxed visit to the wooded lakefront I recommend Harbert Beach to the south (park on a gravel road deep into the lakefront woods and then descend 80' down to a sandy beach). For as small as Sawyer is the town is booming: Greenbush Brewery (with excellent pub grub), Fitzgeralds (more of an upscale dining restaurant) and Sawyer "Garden Center" which is really a permanent farmer's market that also features a wine shop, a European dry goods type area, clothing, etc. - all three of these places seemingly draw everyone from "Harbor Country" over to Sawyer...but no need to look for parking as you can walk to all of this in one minute - you'd be "downtown". Don't worry about drinking and driving - walk. Or conversely, grab a growler and enjoy your beer in the lounge chairs on the back patio or by the fire pit in the backyard. Getting AroundNo need to drive once here - ride a bike to the lake and walk to at least three different and delicious eating options in Sawyer: Greenbush (I really like their Cubano), Fitzgerald's (daily specials), and "Jackies", a heavily landscaped outdoor/covered terrace area serving upscale Mexican (owned by Fitzgeralds). More restaurants technically in Sawyer are a half mile West on Red Arrow Highway (parallels the lakefront - the lake itself is another mile further east from there through heavily wooded dunes). Antique stores and art galleries are in both the "downtown" and Red Arrow parts of Sawyer. New Buffalo (the biggest area town on the lake - it gets quite crowded on peak weekends) is 15 minutes away, with the smaller towns of Union Pier, Lakeside, etc. along the way. Other Things to NoteIf you are a moderate to serious bike rider there are all kinds of places to ride to - the ride south down Elm St. to Three Oaks is pretty with rolling land (in Three Oaks are more art galleries, places to eat and even a whiskey distillery in an old warehouse - Journeyman).

The SpaceManaging the cottage from a distance--I now live in Florida--took a little more work than anticipated, but I now have a New Cleaning Service and great communication with Jessie, who does the cleaning, and with he husband Cory, who does the mowing and all around checking on the place. Guests seem to appreciate the look and feel of the cottage, plus of course its location and the amenities of the area. Comments include..."perfect location for all that harbor country has to offer...cottage is charming and we loved all of the antiques and folk art inside, especially the record player and all the old albums!!!...We had just what we needed with charm and character (URL HIDDEN) is a great location, easy as pie to find and close to anything and everything you would want...Could not have asked for more and it was exactly as advertised...such a great, great deal. We will definitely return!" Guest AccessThere are 2 bedrooms with double beds, a bath with shower; and an extra single bed in the sunny front area. The large screened in back porch is perfect for reading, games, and eating local fare around the antique farm table. Gas and charcoal grill available; large fenced in yard with fire pit. Interaction with GuestsI am out of state, but have a good rapport with my cleaning person, as well as the lawn guy and others whom I can call if problems arise. The NeighborhoodThis is a quiet tree lined street off Red Arrow Highway, less than a mile from the back entrance to Warren Dunes, or you can walk to Sawyer if you're up for it. Large pine trees, starry nights...great for relaxation and getting away from it all. Getting AroundYou can walk or bike into Sawyer. Parking on premises. Warren Dunes is less than a mile to the north; and private Cherry Beach is a few miles to the south, with a parking pass provided. This is a wonderful area of southwest Michigan, with biking and hiking trails, farmers markets, nature preserves, restaurants, breweries, wineries, and casinos (Four Winds Casino is in New Buffalo) and an old fashioned "fun park" with bumper cars, mini golf, batting cages etc just down the road as well. Plus an outlet mall in Michigan City, which is about 20 minutes away (though personally I'm never able to make it in 20 minutes because I always get sidetracked by something on the way that I simply Must stop for!) Other Things to NoteThis is an older cottage with antiques and loads of charm--not a modern condo! Small shower, no dishwasher or washing machine; yes garbage disposal and microwave. If you can leave it in the same condition you find it, I will be happy.

The SpaceOur four-season dwelling is on 4 acres of gardens, pines, and ponds. One small Japanese pond, and a really big pond out back which goes up and down with the river. That's the Galien River which is at the west end of the property. A very comfortable hot tub (2 seater and great jets!) is just outside one of the bedrooms on the porch with a lovely view of the land. It feels like more than 4 acres because there are blueberry fields all around and you can't see or hear any of the neighbors. We have 66 mature organic blueberry bushes ourselves which are free for the picking from July-Sept. The home has 2 bedrooms. The Master bedroom has a Queen size bed and the other bedroom has a trundle bed with 2 twin beds that can connect or not. In the living room is a long sofa bed that folds down to become a full bed. Really comfortable. We also have a Queen size raised air bed which can be set up in the living room, in a big a 4-person tent outside in the summer, or on the porch. 2 bathrooms, one with a marble walk-in shower and the other with an old fashioned laid-back bathtub. And- a fantastic record collection of Classic Jazz and Modern Classical albums! Home has a beautiful kitchen with a big stainless steel refrigerator, great stove, lots of cooking tools and lots of space for creating great meals. Plus a few Weber BBQ's outside for grilling. All rooms have sliding glass doors looking out to the whole property. The big screen porch (14'x26') is great. We eat and even watch TV out there, which is a LEDHD TV. (Bring some good DVD's) - Or play the piano? The house is all wireless, ceiling fans in all the rooms and on porch, and air conditioning/central heat. Great for a romantic and peaceful getaway, a small wedding, honeymoon, family reunions or small retreat groups. Three Oaks is only 90 minutes from Chicago in beautiful Harbor Country, with sparkling beaches, art galleries, great restaurants, dunes and hiking trails. Sometimes we love the winter even more than the summer out here...with the cozy fireplace and tons of firewood at your disposal- or use the fire pit and have a campfire outside. You can even cross-country ski right out back and down the little slope to the river! You will not want to leave when you're here. No one does. Guest AccessAccess to the whole property down to the river, where it ends. Interaction with GuestsSometimes I may sleep in my RV at the back of the property. (But out and about most of the time.) Guests will not see or hear me, unless they need me. The front desk is my cell phone! The NeighborhoodSince I've been here for almost 30 years, I know all my neighbors and we're all good friends. I've always felt very safe in this neighborhood. Everyone looks out for each other. (It's a good way to live.) Getting AroundA 10 minute country drive to beaches and grocery stores, restaurants, galleries, and dunes. Other Things to NoteWe have a terrific record album collection of Modern Jazz, Classic Jazz, 20th Century, Classical and Pop music. And of course a record player! This venue is not a place for crazy parties. It's more of a quiet retreat enclave and that's the kind of bookings work best here.

Unofficially, it is a land sprinkled with charming hamlets, long stretches of beach, and friendly people. Harbor Country proper includes Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer and Three Oaks. The bedrooms are on the second floor, something to take into consideration if you have a difficult time traveling up stairs. There are six steps up to the property that will have to be climbed as well. Otherwise, you have complete access to the house and the twelve acres of property. Interaction with GuestsWe are open to any questions guests may have and would love to talk to you about this special place. The NeighborhoodYou have to see it for yourself to believe it. It is absolutely gorgeous, historic, and secluded. The location is so peaceful and beautiful without having the crowds of living right on the lake and not being so far from Chicago that the drive becomes overwhelming. I have spent longer trying to get through Chicago's rush hour traffic than it takes to get to the farm! The clincher was the perfect amount of time it does actually take to drive to the lake. Ten minutes! That was a huge perk. This part of the world struck us a perfect place to escape with the wonderfully friendly people and the sense of strong community. Not to mention the property is utterly stunning and who wouldn't want a farmhouse that is over a hundred years old? Getting AroundYou will need your car to get to Molly's Deli, Greenbush and Downtown Sawyer or the beach. But put on your walking shoes...because I so the walks. Definitely. In the morning before our guests are awake we walk the property with our coffee and look at all the changes nature has given us. And the runs and bikes down Glendora keep us in shape! The guests: we love having people up to The Farm, it fills us with such joy to be able to share such a magical place with the people we love. The house comfortably accomodates everyone, and finding a peaceful or not-so-peaceful spot (depending on your whims) is not hard to find. The beach: we hop in the car and we are at the beach in ten minutes. We don't have to live with the beach crowds and beach restaurant goers--we can get back to our tranquil house where a few cars going by is unusual. And we love speaking to the local business owners. We have relationships where we end up talking for at least a half hour in each store we visit, it is just that kind of place. Where in Chicago does that happen? Other Things to NoteHowdy! As a native Chicagoan, The Farm has been an extraordinarily special place for me and my mathematician husband. We have traveled all over the globe together and have learned the art of making other travelers comfortable! I spent fifteen years working as a biofeedback therapist and have a huge passion for entertaining. One year I cooked over 100 pounds of brisket for our holiday party! In this new economy I now have the opportunity to live out my dream of acting full-time and tending to this amazing property. We are almost always seen digging in the gardens or walking the property with mugs of coffee in the morning! In Chicago you will find us at most every concert and theatre event there is...we love art, museums, and are curious about the beautiful universe we live in. We are very aware of making the most out of the time we have left on this earth and would love to show you the magic of this wonderful place.
