The SpaceThis is our retreat, a small older home with a lot of homey stuff in it, and we come here often throughout the year. When guests are here, If we need to come and do maintenance, we only come after our guests say OK, and we stay in a separate space on the property away from the main house. We are set up for vacations or for the business person who needs quiet to work. For the vacation people, there are La-Z-Boy recliners and several TVs, with cable reception. There are also DVD players and VCR players with some older movies to chill out with, and some movies for kids. Board games and playing cards are in the cabinets. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and an electric mattress cover with dual (or is it duel?) controls; the second bedroom has a double bed with an adjacent bath. For the business person, Wi-fi works well here; we both worked from home here for a few years without any interruptions.
The kitchen is fully equipped, with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, and some spices, etc. so if you want to cook and eat in, there's no reason not to. We've had guests who book for the holidays, and cook here.
There are decks that run the length of the house front and back, and a propane grill on the back deck. We also make sure there is firewood handy for the wood stove if you wish to use that.
We have dogs and a cat that are here when we are, but even when we're not, our place might not be suitable for those who have pet allergies, since we cannot ever guarantee all allergens are totally gone.
Because of the ponds, this is not a good place for a family with small children.
The house sits on three acres, with two ponds, and is very secluded. It is fully fenced. Some years in the spring fawns are raised here. We want guests to keep the gates closed and keep does out now--we don't want a doe and very young fawns to come in, and not be able to escape if guests bring pets.
If you are interested in country quiet, this is a great spot. On the other hand, it is a well located place to explore Seattle (leave the car behind at the Bremerton ferry dock and walk on the ferry, a half hour from the house-- have you checked into Seattle parking prices?); the Olympic peninsula with Olympic National Park; Bainbridge Island (art, public gardens, and wine); Port Townsend (the "Victorian town" about an hour away); the Pacific ocean (2 1/2 hours); casinos (gambling, eats, and some shows); Hood Canal (kayaks are available for rent in summer at the beach in Seabeck, or bring your own to launch at Seabeck); and local beaches and hiking trails. Bremerton also has the Admiral Theater, with some good live shows, and a few good restaurants, a marina, and waterfront walks. Silverdale is for shopping at multiple malls and complexes, and there is a very good YMCA gym there as well. Guest AccessYou have access to all the property, about three acres, except the workshop. There is one room of the house closed off where we keep our personal stuff, but the rest of the house is available, including the washer and dryer. Any food or cooking supplies in the kitchen are fair game; we just ask that you replenish anything you use in large amounts, so we aren't left without when we return! There are some board games and playing cards in the cabinets in the living room/dining area. Feel free to look around for those things. TVs get cable, including some movie channels, and there is a DVD player if you want to bring something particular to watch. We also have some old DVD movies to choose from. When it's cool enough to use the wood stove, we leave kindling and firewood on the back deck, and there is more wood in the wood shed. There is also a gas grill on the back deck, which you can use; we just ask you clean off the grill surface some after you use it, and be sure the grease gets caught in a soup can or something like that and not be left to drip on the mat underneath :-( Interaction with GuestsWe are available by phone or text pretty much any time. We also have a neighbor who is available, and will take care of anything immediate that might arise. We leave contact phone numbers for you on the dining room table, along with other information you might find helpful. The NeighborhoodThis is a small quiet neighborhood, with only four or so neighbor properties, but most of us have known each other for years. That said, each parcel is large, so we all have a great deal of privacy, but can be available to each other when need be. We do advise our neighbors when guests are expected. One neighbor may be by to mow the grass in spring and summer, but he doesn't need to access the house at all to do that. Our housekeeper makes sure everything is ready, and she also can be a resource if you need something and can't find it. Please drive carefully on our private road!
There are several county trails to walk within a short drive, and there is the little tiny "town" of Seabeck, with a big marina under construction, and a tiny store. The store sometimes has some pretty great desserts to buy. Seabeck Pizza is also there, and is quite good. And there is a massage studio there as well.
The crossroads of Camp Union is even closer with a small grocery store, saloon (really), more very good pizza and a gas station. Getting AroundYou definitely need a car here, and need directions from us to find us! Please drive slowly on our private road, to protect children, dogs, and wildlife. Our house is out in the country, about a ten minute drive from the closest little general store and Hood Canal access. We are about 25 minutes from a major shopping area in Silverdale (Kitsap Mall) with absolutely every store you can imagine, several restaurants and an excellent YMCA gym. It is about the same time and distance into Bremerton. Other Things to NoteThis is a quiet place to do business if that is your need.
On the other hand, there are tons of chairs to sit in on the decks front and back and chill. The house is wheelchair accessible, with a ramp from the side to the back door.
There are a few kids' toys on the back deck, and in the house. There is also a doggie door, and the property is fully fenced so pets can come and go without worries. We just ask you protect our light-colored living room rug if you bring a pet or two, and we have a funky cover for it handy to use.
