The SpaceOur historic cape on a quiet country road is generally available by the week only in warm weather. (The settings here resist my indicating it, but we occasionally invite people for just a few nights.) It's a lovely private country place for families, individuals, friends or lovers to relax, hike, bike, sleep and read. It has an eat-in country kitchen, sitting ("middle") room, living room, mud-room/pantry and a cozy double bedroom on the ground floor. There is a light and spacious double bedroom on the 2nd floor, as well as a single, and the bathroom. Beds for 5 people. We are artists, and have had this complex for about 40 years. We live in the white house up the driveway in summers. We ask guests to bring their own sheets and towels unless otherwise arranged. Kitchen linens are supplied. Guest AccessThe house shares a driveway with our own house, just off a dirt road. Parking is alongside the driveway or in the lot in front of the barn. Interaction with GuestsNormally we greet guests, show them around, and answer questions on first meeting. Soon after their arrival we invite them for a glass of wine in our house if they'd like. It is expected that both households are independent and that privacy is respected. We are friendly and glad to chat from time to time as neighbors - and certainly to address any questions or needs. If a guest arranges to be using the writer's shed in the woods, they will be walking through our large back yard to get there. This seems to work fine with everyone. The NeighborhoodLocated at the edge of the quiet hamlet of South Montville, fields, a large pond and woods are all within easy walking distance. We are about 20 minutes drive to Belfast. Searsmont and Liberty are within 10 minutes. Get goat milk and cheeses just up the road, fresh free range eggs from another neighbor. There are wonderful farmers markets nearby. Lake St George is nearby, a beautiful spring fed lake that feeds into St George's River. A great park there is perfect for families with young swimmers to picnic and play all afternoon. It has a boat launch too. Stevens Pond is closer, smaller and also very nice for swims and small boats. We're 15 miles from Belfast on the Penobscot Bay. Within 45 minutes are Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Searsport and their great harbors, tidewater swimming and boating, shopping, dining, sightseeing, theaters, cafes, movies and art centers. Plenty to do and see. The Belfast city park faces the bay, and among the trees and lawns are tennis courts and swimming pool. Getting AroundThere is, alas, no public transportation. There is a taxi in Belfast, and there is a regular bus that runs up and down Route 1 along the coast several times a day. Buses also come to Augusta from Boston. Airports: Portland, Bangor, Augusta and Rockland. Other Things to NoteThe Maine Fiddler's Camp meets for a week or two at the other end of Trues' Pond in June and August, a wonderful multigenerational gathering. Sometimes the sounds of their shindigs can be heard, along with those of the loons, from the pond.

In Winter, there's downhill and cross country skiing, tobogganing at the Snow Bowl in Camden, including the annual National Toboggan Championship, ice skating, pick-up hockey, and snow shoeing. At the end of a gated, quarter mile long driveway is our 1 and 1/2 story log home. Perched on the side of Levinseller mountain, this house faces due south and features a 4 season sun room that transitions to a covered wrap around porch. On top of the house, is an 8X8 tower that has windows on all 4 sides. For those not afraid of heights, you can step out on to a 4X8 deck and sit down to enjoy a view of the back side of the Camden hills, a sliver of Penobscot Bay, part of Lake Megunticook, Ragged Mtn, Hatchet Mtn, Moody Mtn, and our own Levinsellor pond. Which, by the way, is directly across the street from our driveway. It is clean and perfect for a dip on a hot summer day. At night, the tower is the perfect place to check out the stars. When you enter the house, you step into the kitchen, which is fully equipped. Cooking is by gas stove. The washer and dryer are tucked into a pocket in the kitchen. The kitchen and dining room are open concept. Walking through the dining room, which seats 4 comfortably, your are looking through the sun room at the view. Turning the corner, you enter either the sunroom or the living room and see the cathedral ceiling and loft. There is satellite TV and a Blu-ray DVD player for entertainment (bring your own DVD's), and a Bose Cinemate system for enhanced sound. We also have Internet service and there is excellent cellphone reception. Off the living room is the master bedroom which features a queen size bed with quality linens, a ceiling fan, and private access to the 3/4 bath. There is also access to the bathroom from the kitchen. The second floor also has a 3/4 bathroom. The second bedroom upstairs also has a queen size bed with quality linens and a cozy sitting area that has a nice view of our perennial flower gardens. Off our wrap around porch,at the edge of the forest and our flower gardens, is our sundeck. You can sit with your first cup of coffee in the morning and soak in the view while enjoying the variety of birds visiting our multiple feeders. The hummingbirds are always enjoyable to watch at our feeders. You may see hawks or an eagle circling the pond. At night or in the morning, you will hear the loons calling. If you listen very carefully, you will also hear loons calling from a neighboring pond. Camden, which is 12 minutes away from the house, is truly unique among Maine coastal towns in that the 'mountains meet the sea'. Mount Battie looms over the harbor and town and the base is a short walk from downtown. At the top, the view is one of coastal Maine's most stunning. There is a stone tower there that you can climb that gives a 360 degree view. Downtown Camden has been consistently ranked as one of the most picturesque on the coast of Maine. A variety of shops to wander through, a picture perfect harbor that is homeport to several large Schooners that offer 2 hour excursions or up to 10 days. Camden library's amphitheater is a national historic landmark and across the street is a grassy hill overlooking the harbor. The Camden Hills offer miles of hiking and biking and there are numerous lakes and ponds for kayaking or boating. At the end of the day, you can return to the house and sit out on the porch, enjoy the light breeze, and relax while you plan your next day. It is perfect.
