The SpaceMending Wall began its life as two small post & beam barns that were put together to make one large space. In the 1960's it became the art studio of Jules Olitsky who used the space to fabricate large-scale metal sculptures and work on large canvas pieces. It morphed in the 70's into first a handcrafts work space/retail space and then into a 3 bedroom house. Presently it is an awesome combination of coziness, light, line and spaciousness with a great place to cook and entertain family & friends or enjoy a candle-lit dinner for two! Guest AccessMending Wall is a self-contained separate unit. Keys are in the ornamental bowl on the desk in the dining room. Interaction with GuestsGuests come and go freely. We try to let folks be and leave encounters up to serendipity. The Neighborhood5 minutes drive to Bennington College and charming North Bennington, 10 minutes to Old Bennington which houses the Bennington Battle Monument and Old First Church, 15 minutes to Bennington Museum. 30 minutes drive to Manchester which has plenty of Outlet Shopping. Northshire Bookstore, also in Manchester, is a must see for book lovers of all ages. Getting AroundMending Wall has limited access to public transportation at curbside furnished by Green Mountain Express to points north, south, and east.

The SpaceOn the main floor of the house there is one private back room with a futon which will comfortably sleep two. There is also a single bed in my daughter's room in the other wing. There is a queen master bedroom and bathroom upstairs, but we only rent that to parties of more than three for an additional fee. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the entire downstairs. We have a young child, so the house is set up with plenty of toys and games. We do have an outdoor cat and two dogs in case you need to know for allergy purposes. Interaction with GuestsWe try to be there to greet you and show you around, otherwise, the space is yours unless you would like a tour of the area or need anything else. We speak French marginally well! In the summer, a gardener may stop by and you will be notified in advance. This house is also available as a room share that can accommodate a couple and child. Ask me for a Special Offer. The NeighborhoodWe live in the country! There are lots of great places to walk and lots of farmstands. There are also surprisingly a great number of artistic/cultural things to do in the area- see Hubbard Hall, Bromley Mountain, Willard Mountain, Hildene, Park McCullough House, Robert Frost House, Brown's Brewery, Argyle Brewery, Battenkill Valley Creamery and numerous new wineries. Getting AroundYou will need a car to get here. The closest airport and train is Albany, NY. Other Things to NoteWe typically rent to 3 people, so as to keep our master bedroom off-limits as a personal storage space. The house can sleep 5 people comfortably, but there is an extra charge to use the upstairs room. The extra charge wouldn't apply to any babies or such sharing the bedroom with their parents. We have a garden and guests are free to make use of that with permission in the summer. This house is also available as a room share that can accommodate a couple and child. Ask me for a Special Offer.

Stay in a historic home designed by Lavius Fillmore [1807]. This converted kitchen includes old fireplace or wood stove (September 15-April 1), 1 bedroom, full bath, kitchen, living room, hardwood floors in main living space, separate entrance, and lots of quiet privacy close to country amenities. The kitchen is stocked with fresh eggs from our own free range chickens, Organic Vermont Milk, and Real Maple Syrup. Wonderful museums, walking, hiking, biking, swimming and downhill/cross-country skiing (winter), restaurants, and bookstores are close at hand. The house was built by Joshua Munro, a farmer who grew wheat for export to Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Lavius Fillmore, the architect, was well-known to New England primarily as a designer of public meeting houses. Nearby is the Old First Chruch in Old Bennington that is often open to visitors and shows many classical influences with the most prominent being the Venetian 3-part arched window as reintroduced by Palladio during the Renaissance. There are a number of private homes, including this one, in the region that are also designed by Filmore or are inspired by his work. Disclosure: this property was built prior to 1978 and most likely has had lead-based paints used. Please avoid sanding surfaces or ingesting anything resembling paint in any form during your visit. Thank you!

Experience Mending Wall in Southern Vermont! It promises to evoke the spirit of Robert Frost's poetry. A few words from our very happy guests: Tray commented: "This is a spectacular value - Kevin is such an enthusiastic host, and equips the house extraordinarily well. The house is extremely spacious, and multiple couples will feel that they've got plenty of private space. If you're looking for a place to stay in southern Vermont, make it the Mending Wall. If you're not looking for a place in southern Vermont, find a reason to do so!" Justine shared, "Could not have been happier. The space was exactly what we were looking for: relaxed, spacious, beautiful views, lots of light, and quiet! It was the perfect escape from the city."  Heather noted, "Kevin's place is beautiful and unique. The layout makes it great for just two people or many more. The kitchen was very well stocked and a pleasure to cook in (those amazing fresh eggs!). We came to relax and get away from the city, and it was perfect for that. We were close to tons of hiking trails. There are outlet stores in Manchester just north if you aren't into outdoors stuff. Kevin responded very quickly to my messages. He's a gracious, friendly host, and offered good suggestions for places to visit in the area. We'd love to come back." Dor stated, "This is a fantastic place. Very pleasant and private. Well stocked with various things to eat (or cook). A short drive from North Bennington and Bennington College. I would definitely consider staying there again on my next visit to the area, particularly if I am with others. Staying here is a much nicer experience than any hotel." Comfortable and spacious, this former sculptor's studio with its wide pine floors and unique architect-designed open plan, will thrill you in unexpected ways and bring out your inner kid. Fashioned out of two small post & beam 18th century barns and outfitted with modern amenities, this creative space feels like youth itself. It sleeps from one to six people. The kitchen is well-stocked for cooking including fresh eggs from our own free range chickens, Organic Vermont Milk, and Real Maple Syrup. The kitchen flows into a generous dining area with a large table and views of the neighboring farmette and Paran Creek. The living room is lined with bookshelves and includes a futon, comfy chairs, telescope, game table and media center that includes Netflix and wi-fi internet access, plus lots of DVDs and VHSs. There's plenty outdoor space, too, including a porch with an oval-shaped cast iron table and chairs ideal for a picnic. Activities nearby: hiking, biking, walking, skiing (40 scenic minutes to Bromley Mountain, 52 minutes to Stratton Mountain), horseback riding; 1 hour to Vermont Country Store in Weston; 20 minutes to Manchester; 23 minutes to Mass MoCa; 1 hour to Albany; 1-1/2 hours to Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow and other Berkshire attractions; 1/2 hour to Williamstown, home of Williams College and renowned Theatre Festival, also Clark Art Institute; 45 minutes to Mass MoCA; 5 minutes to Bennington College; also Robert Frost Museum just down the road. You'll also find world-class dining 5 minutes away in beautiful North Bennington at the famed Pangaea restaurant. Also in town is Kevin's Restaurant that has fabulous pub fare and one of the friendliest wait staffs around. Local transportation is available through Green Mountain Express that has service at curbside. Schedule and fees available upon request. When calculating number of guests for your visit, please include all children in that final count-thanks! Please make Mending Wall in Southern Vermont your home-away-from-home and come back, often! It is a 19th century stone foundation constructed farmhouse with all the charms Vermont has to offer. It's only 4 hours from NYC and 3 hours from Boston, but it feels like a different country! The house and traditional barn are set on a gravel road and rest on 180 acres that are all yours to access during your stay. Enjoy your morning coffee on the porch and you may catch a local doe and her fawns, a flock of turkeys or fall foliage along the mountain vistas. We are adjacent to the Lake Shaftsbury State Park if you enjoy swimming, boating, fishing or hiking. The park can be reached in 5 minutes by car. If winter is more your season you can be on the slopes at Bromley or Stratton in 30-45 minutes drive and stop by Manchester on your way back through to shop at the outlets or dine at one of the many restaurants the area has to offer; we recommend The Silver Fork, Bistro Henry or The Perfect Wife. Guest AccessThe entire house and property are yours to enjoy during your stay. The house includes four bedrooms (that can sleep 7 comfortably) and 2 1/4 bathrooms. There is an office set to the side of the house if you're trying to get work done while the family plays, and an arts and crafts area in the laundry room. The kitchen boasts a gas range and stove and there is also a propane grill for warm summer nights. Interaction with GuestsWe are happy to be here to greet you for your stay if you would like, or we can leave keys for you on the day of your arrival. One of our closest neighbors will be nearby and available for emergencies and one of us will be reachable by phone and/or email for any questions you may have during your stay. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood has been home to many of the same families for many years and also to some new families. It is quiet and secluded from the main highway and allows those around to enjoy a relaxed pace of life. It is a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and if you should happen upon neighbors during your walks, say hello! Everyone around here is very friendly. We are a 15 minute drive from Bennington and Manchester. If you need any quick conveniences there are also a few shops in Arlington 5 minutes drive away. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation available and if you plan on leaving the property to go to town throughout your stay you will need to have a car. Other Things to NoteWhile there is on site WiFi, cable TV and a land line telephone, there is no access to mobile data or cell phone service in the house. There is spotty service for some outside. Service kicks in about a mile down the road and call over WiFi works great on my Samsung Galaxy S7 when I am here. We are all hooked to our cell phones, but we find it does not bother us to be without that gadget for short periods when in the house. Texts, emails and land line seem to fill the temporary void quite nicely.

This experience is Vermont at its best! Fully restored 200+ yr. old colonial farmhouse, on 40+ acres. Set on a spectacular piece of land that includes a Vermont mountain stream, open space, plenty of walking trails and some fun & challenging hiking opportunities up through the forest. Original field stone fireplace in living room built by John Stanley c. 1800. The state of the art kitchen is well stocked and features modern stainless steel appliances: 6 burner professional chef gas stove, dishwasher and microwave, yet still has that old world charm with butcher block counters and wood beams. 3 sets of French doors that lead to a cozy back porch with panoramic scenery. Take in the views of “the back 40” while sipping your coffee, listening to the creek and contemplating a walk through the forest up to Oscar, the second oldest oak in Vermont. Or savor a glass of wine as you watch the sunset behind the mountain and maybe plan a hike to the Northwest corner, where there is an old post marking the NY/VT state boundary. (Our property backs up to 800 acres of state forest and mountains.) Either way be sure to take a rest and take in the breath taking views at “The Fork” on your way up. We love the area and property so much we also bought the cabin next door. Feel free to mosey over and check out the pond, the active Christmas tree farm and the tiny 10 person cemetery dating from the early 1800s. (The cabin is also for rent VRBO 745850). The farmhouse is conveniently located between charming Manchester with its fine restaurants and upscale designer outlets and quaint, historic Bennington. This is Vermont at its best- small shops, antique stores, museums, art galleries, Green Mountain views, fine dining and 30 minutes to Bromley ski resort (which turns into a summer adventure park). Each of the two bedrooms have a new queen size bed and there is a queen size Klik-Klak futon in the great room (next to a full bath and a door that can be closed off to the rest of house, giving this space the privacy of a 3rdbedroom, if needed) . The upstairs bath is quite large and updated, as is the first floor bath.
