The best way to experience Antietam Battlefield is by bicycle. The tour road is hilly in places but can be easily ridden by a moderately in-shape person using a capable 21 speed bike, of course you can always walk up a hill. The battlefield loop is about 9 miles long. The C&O Canal National Park borders Sharpsburg. This 185 mile path follows the Potomac River from Georgetown DC to Cumberland MD. Here the terrain is gentle, and along the scenic tree-lined path you will find historic ruins, cliffs and caves, and some good riverside picnic spots. Shady biking conditions make this trip a great option for hot Summer days. In the fall the trail becomes radiant with the colors of changing leaves.     .Our Civil-War era house is a perfect go-to or get-away for those who are stopping for only one night and for those who need a homebase as they explore the area. Visitors can stay home and enjoy the porch, deck, and 1/2 acre backyard, or they can venture out to the nearby attractions--battlefields, shopping malls, biking or hiking trails, canoeing/kayaking/tubing on the Antietam Creek and Potomac River. The log and stone house has three levels--UPSTAIRS: bedroom with a queen bed, half bath, and "landing library" that has a convertible double sofa bed. A chaise lounge on which to read the books and magazines there. MIDDLE: fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, dining/sitting room,l bath with washer/dryer; LOWER: two convertible sofas (a queen with an inflatable pillow and a twin bed hidden in the chair and a half)), piano, cable TV, DVDs and player, radio, board games, and "candleplace." There is off-street parking and a shed to lock your bikes. We supply all linens, paper products, and a continental breakfast for your first morning. We have two baby gates and a pack 'n play for your little one. If you bring your dog, it will have its own dog bed. Our guests may check out materials from the Sharpsburg library on Main Street, just a block away. Even though it is an easy 10 minute drive to all the fine dining and shopping of Shepherdstown, being at the cabin feels like instant vacay. Drop your bags and head to the vintage furniture on the front porch or stone patio. While your goal may be to read, you will be distracted by the cool breezes and dappled sunlight, the lovely trees and the birds. Watch the pair of nesting hawks just off the front porch. Listen to owls calling. Gorgeous setting to enjoy Fall foliage. Many Christmas tree farms close by. Book with us, and go home with a fresh cut Kitchen includes microwave, convection toaster oven, blender, and mini-frig. Complete coffee station including whole beans & grinder, drip coffee maker and thermal carafe. Breakfast is on us. Stocked with cereal, granola, yogurt, oj, milk. Local fruit in season. Please note there is NO STOVE - take advantage of the many fine dining options in Shepherdstown. Bathroom with enclosed shower and premium towels and bath products. Sleep loft with brand new Ikea queen bed and fresh linens. Loft is reached by steep stairs. This is a rural area, so cell phone service is spotty. No TV. Easy 20 minute drive to historic attractions and river activities in Harpers Ferry. Hike or bike the C&O canal. Canoe, kayak or go tubing on the Potomac river.       If you are looking for quiet, privacy, and convenience, this is the place.   The house is one block from the busy Main Street (MD Rt. 34). The house, on 1/2 acre, contains three levels. It is a log structure, covered in German clapboard wood siding.  The floors are the original pine put down when the house was built in 1856.  The house has all modern conveniences for your comfort and ease. The kitchen is fully equipped with a stove, oven, microwave, toaster over, coffee maker, and refrigerator.  Ask about the new diswasher.  The breakfast is continental and provided for your first day.Two separate sitting areas, games, DVDs, and a converted fireplace all add to your pleasant stay.  Information about the town, battlefields, and dining are in the house. Coffee, tea, popcorn, are always in the house. A front porch and back deck expand your private space to the outside. Off street parking is near the back door. A locked shed will keep your bicycles safe. Dogs are welcome. Children (under 18 years old) are free.There are three separate sleeping areas, two on the third floor, one on the first floor.  We have a Pack'n Play for babies. We've recently spared no expense in creating an apartment in our sun-lit, walk-out basement with private entrance. The NeighborhoodWe sit on 8 acres back in the woods with a spectacular view. We have no neighbors. The lane that takes you back to our house is about 1/2 mile long. We're 5 minutes to Antietam battlefield, 5 minutes to Boonsboro, 20 minutes to Harpers Ferry, 5 minutes to closes access point to C&O canal. Martha participates in many marathons and ultra-marathons in the area and we can arrange shuttle service to an athletic event for a small fee. Other Things to NoteWe have a large, friendly, elderly dog. If you don't like being around dogs, this may not be a good space for you.       .Our Civil-War era house is a perfect go-to or get-away for those who are stopping for only one night and for those who need a homebase as they explore the area. Visitors can stay home and enjoy the porch, deck, and 1/2 acre backyard, or they can venture out to the nearby attractions--battlefields, shopping malls, biking or hiking trails, canoeing/kayaking/tubing on the Antietam Creek and Potomac River. The log and stone house has three levels--UPSTAIRS: bedroom with a queen bed, half bath, and "landing library" that has a convertible double sofa bed. A chaise lounge on which to read the books and magazines there. MIDDLE: fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, dining/sitting room,l bath with washer/dryer; LOWER: two convertible sofas (a queen with an inflatable pillow and a twin bed hidden in the chair and a half)), piano, cable TV, DVDs and player, radio, board games, and "candleplace." There is off-street parking and a shed to lock your bikes. We supply all linens, paper products, and a continental breakfast for your first morning. We have two baby gates and a pack 'n play for your little one. If you bring your dog, it will have its own dog bed. Our guests may check out materials from the Sharpsburg library on Main Street, just a block away. This 1856 house, once home to C&O Canal boat captains and a Civil War veteran, retains its historic features while providing modern comfort and convenience including central air, tv, and free, unlimited Wi-Fi.         The SpaceYou will be staying in a bit of history. The 1810 historic stone house served as a hospital during the Antietam Civil War battle. Kitchen - equipped with large and small appliances, dinnerware, flatware and cookware. The table seats 6 Family room - wood burning fireplace, tv with satellite service, extensive library of Civil War books and videos Dining room seats 8 & full bath on 1st floor Living room - decorative, heat-producing fireplace insert; games and puzzles in the cupboard Second floor - three bedrooms and a full bathroom with tub/shower Third floor - bedroom with bed and futon, ensuite bathroom with tub/shower Washer and dryer in basement Guest AccessYou have access to the entire house. In the field outside the fence there is a stone fireplace for campfires. There are branches, wood and a metal grate for cooking. We use the large stumps for chairs so please do not burn them.  We keep marshmallows in the freezer. Do not drive the farm truck (poor brakes). Do not go in the barn (bad floor).   Interaction with GuestsThis is strictly a rental house; we do not live on the property. After you are met for check in, you are on your own to enjoy the house. We’ll give you plenty of phone numbers to answer questions. The NeighborhoodThe farm is adjacent to the Antietam Battlefield and near to many historic and scenic attractions including Gettysburg and other Civil War sites. You are within walking distance to C&O canal. Other Things to NoteThe back patio has outdoor seating with an umbrella. The shed has additional plastic tables, umbrellas, folding chairs and cushions.  There is also a propane gas grill that you are welcome to use. Please do not push the gas grill against the house. From the house you can see the barn that holds hay for the cows. Yes, there are cows. They are friendly and curious and will likely come to greet you at some point. Avoid chasing or aggravating them. And always close the gate so they don't get out (and gate around house so they don't get into the yard around the house.

        Antietam Guest House is a historic log and stone home in the quiet rural town of Sharpsburg, best known for its proximity to the Antietam National Battlefield, site of the famous Civil War battle. The house has three levels. Sleeping areas are on the first and third level, a total of five separate beds. Happy to answer any questions about the sleeping arrangements. Middle level has kitchen and sitting room. Bathroom with shower is on middle level. Front porch and back deck have chairs and table for outside weather times. Motion detected flood lights at back porch for nighttime security. Sharpsburg is a designated Canal Town, part of the trail experience between Georgetown and Cumberland and Pittsburg on the C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. Free, unlimited Wi-Fi keeps guests connected to the unbounded internet world. Full kitchen with dishwasher. All linens supplied. Washer and drier with laundry soap. Central air conditioning and heating keep the house comfortable. A fan and ceiling fan help move air through the house. Supplemental heating systems can be turned on if the weather is frightful. Deck furniture, with umbrella, and porch seating extend the space to the outdoors, Outside lighting creates safe nighttime backyard and deck activities. Two baby gates are ready to set at the top or bottom of the stairs to keep your toddlers or dogs safe. The house is one block off Main Street, 4.1 miles from Shepherdstown, West Virginia, 10 miles from Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and 13 miles from Hagerstown, Maryland. Harpers Ferry is about 14 miles from the house. Gettsyburg National Military Park is about one hour from Sharpsburg. The house is within walking distance to casual and fine dining and the famous Nutters Ice Cream Shop.. The house is 1.7 miles from the Potomac River and the C&O Canal and towpath. Bikers have an up-hill ride from Snyders Landing to Chapline Street (1.5 miles) and a down-hill coast for the final two blocks to Antietam Guest House. The half-acre lot offers plenty of room for outside activity. The house and location are perfect for weekend getaways and family vacations. Three levels offer privacy and convenience at the same time. The downstairs level features a 'living' rock wall foundation and a 'candleplace,' the stone fireplace transformed to hold real candles for the feel of a fire and romance without ashes and soot.
