Located in Richmond Beach, this house is a part of a 150 year old waterfront community eight miles north of downtown Seattle boasting beach shacks and mansions. It's safe and ideal for the family. With the downtown Seattle area just a 20 minute drive away and the quaint seaside town of Edmonds is just 5 minutes away this is a prime location to retreat or explore. This recently remodeled 1935 house was renovated to accommodate an active, imaginative and ever growing family. Their playfulness and attention to detail makes it as much a sanctuary as it is an inspiration, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who stays there. Watch the sunset over the Olympic Mountain Range, take the stairs to the beach, relax in the hot tub over looking the water and the Burlington Northern Railway or cozy up by the fire after a day of exploring the city. There is one more single bedroom upstairs that completes the upper floor. On the main floor you will find an impressive open room with tables to seat 20 people, beautiful long wood floors, a stunning stone fire place, grand piano and luxurious bench seating to compliment every inch of big window views. Attached to the main room is a large kitchen with counter tops made from a reclaimed sailboat, a viking oven and gas burners, a large fridge big enough for any family and almost everything you would need to prepare and serve food no matter what the occasion. Also on the mail floor you will find three bathrooms (one with a claw foot bathtub), a laundry room, another bedroom with a queen and bunk single bed and every child's dream playroom equipped with books and toys galore. If that isn't enough to wet your vacation rental appetite enter through a secret door down to the basement and find a Sundance style independent apartment tucked away by a sliding book case. With a kitchen, gas fireplace, queen bed and bathroom as well as a private entrance this addition gives privacy to multiple family rentals. And last but definitely not last is a quaint guest house located outside of the main floor of the house. The SpaceThe apartment has white washed tongue and groove on the walls, tropical mahogany floors (recycled), hand made Mexican tiles in the kitchen, two private entrances and lots of light through 6 sets of windows. There is a large library of books and two TV sets, stereo and wifi. There is one conventional bedroom. The other bedroom can be created by sliding two French doors to close off part of the main room. There is a day bed which makes a comfortable single bed and a very comfortable twin sofa bed. There is an additional bedroom (and bathroom) on the main floor which can be used by special arrangement. A front loading washer and dryer in the apartment is for your use. Guest AccessThe guests will have access to the main floor which has a deck with a great view of the sound. It is equipped with a porch swing, a large table and a pellet grill. A lovely place to hang out or have a meal. The living room has a baby grand. Interaction with GuestsI would hope that if you have a problem with the apartment that you will let me know. I can solve almost any problem if I know about it. I much prefer to deal with it at the time and make you comfortable rather than have you be unhappy and then complain in the review. Generally, I take my clue from my guests as to how much interaction would be enjoyable to them. Guests can have complete privacy in the apartment. If they want company they can come to the main floor. I will be practicing the piano during the day (not something you will probably enjoy). I am happy to provide information about Seattle since I have lived in this area for over 30 years. I will be home during my guests' stay but I stay busy. The master suite on the top floor is my private space where I quilt and sleep. Be careful about discussing quilting with me. You may regret it after I show you a dozen quilts. The NeighborhoodThe Richmond Beach neighborhood is a lovely place to walk and is so quiet and peaceful. You can easily walk to the beach and to neighborhood restaurants. We are about 20-30 minutes from Seattle, give or take so it's easy to go to Seattle for opera, ballet or the symphony or for sports events or just shopping and sight seeing. Seattle is a wonderful, beautiful city. Getting AroundThere is public transit but a car makes things much easier. If you don't bring a car I can give you a ride to the bus stops. The ferry dock in Edmonds is only about 10 minutes away by car. Other Things to NoteThe apartment is child friendly. I have a pack and play, sippy cups, plastic plates, a child's desk/table with matching chairs equipped with colored pens, paper tablet, play dough, bubble liquid, and books. Also dolls and soft toys. I have a small collection of music boxes for the children's use. No blame for breakage! I will put a few things in the kitchen and the refrigerator so you don't have to rush to a grocery store. I have throws for cuddling, real china for your table and a free standing gas fireplace to keep you cozy on rainy days. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Kitchen Aid, Cusinart food processor, coffee maker, and all the knives and pots and pans a real cook needs. This is not a solicitation but I have had guests bring gifts for me. This is not necessary at all but if you do please keep in mind that I am a quilter. If you are from outside the US a small piece of fabric that is unique to your culture would be so special. By small I mean as small as 4 inches square. Or a small piece of silk ribbon or just a piece of fabric you think is pretty. A fat quarter or 1/4 yard is very nice. Special annual events: Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker November through December; party at Richmond Beach to watch Christmas ships about December 10th; Folklife Festival Memorial Day weekend; Bumbershoot arts festival over Labor Day weekend; huge fireworks display on Lake Union on the 4th of July; Wintergrass bluegrass festival late February: Taste Washington in late March; Fremont Parade and Fair in June includes nude, painted bicyclists; Tulip Festival April 1-30; Seattle Opera does the Ring Cycle every few years and lots more.

The SpaceMy place is set in a nice, comfortable, quiet neighborhood. There are so many things that are walking distance. An amazing park, Boeing Creek Park/Shoreview Park with lots of trails, little waterfalls and creeks. It is also a great, but challenging place to go mountain biking. We are walking distance from Shoreline Community College, and minutes away from walking to any major bus route that can take you wherever you need to go in the surrounding area. We are centrally located, so everything is pretty easy to get to. Guest AccessEasy access to I-5 - only 7 minutes away. 2 major malls - Alderwood Mall in Lynwood, WA. 12 minutes away Northgate Mall - 9 minutes away Downtown Seattle - 18 minutes University of Washington - 14 minutes Shoreline Community College - 3 minutes Edmonds Community College - 12 minutes Interaction with GuestsI am looking forward to meeting new people and interacting with the guests. I am busy with my daughter and seeking employment after being a full time Mom for several years. But, as long as my guests are nice, down to earth, trustworthy people, I would love the opportunity to interact with them. I can also take them around Seattle and take them to tourist destinations for an addition gas and time fee. The NeighborhoodI love the fact that all my neighbors and respectful, kind and look out for each other. We have a very warm and loving neighborhood. Getting AroundThere are major bus routes only minutes walking distance from my home. They will take you pretty much whoever you want to go. Just make sure you check the times for the evening routes and holiday routes and anything that may change due to weather. Other Things to NoteI am a clean person and would just expect guest to clean up after themselves. I don't mind cooking for guest, I just want to make sure that we all respect each others space, privacy and cleanliness.

The SpaceWe have a cute, eclectic home, that is warm and comfortable. There are two bedrooms: a master with a queen bed, and an office with a comfortable queen blow-up bed. There is also a third bedroom (fondly called the piano room) that you have to walk through to enter the master although there is no bed. Two beds only are provided (one in master and one in office) but you can fit a blow-up mattress in the piano room if you bring one and our couch is also very large and comfy (fits a full size human). Two bathrooms, one full with tub and one 3/4. We have a very nice back porch that is perfect for lounging or dinner. The yard is fenced, and there's a BBQ ready to rock. The kitchen has everything you need to make meals...gas stove, pots and pans, waffle iron, blender, food processor, spices and condiments, utensils, and a dishwasher. The living room has a TV and DVD player with a few DVD's to choose from or a redbox about 4 blocks away. The master bedroom has a digital TV that you can hook your computer up to. Free wifi. Driveway has space for three vehicles. If you want, you can borrow our mountain bike to explore Shoreline. There are a few bars and restaurants nearby. We have a mother-in-law apartment above our garage that is rented by our full-time tenant, Justin, and his dog, Rocket. His dog has access to the yard. We only rent out our home when we are out-of-town for vacation so it's not available often (we wish we were on vacation more often!). Guest AccessGuests have access to the entire home except the garage. Interaction with GuestsSince we only rent our home when we are on vacation, we will likely not see you unless you arrive just as we are leaving town. We will leave you a person to contact if you have any problems. Justin is also available to answer questions about the house. The NeighborhoodShoreline is a quiet, family friendly community with lots of parks within walking distance for hiking (huge forested park 4 blocks away) or taking your kids to the playground. Easy access to the mountains (1 hour), the beach (10 min) or downtown Seattle (15 min). Getting AroundIf you prefer public transit or don't want to hassle with parking in downtown Seattle, there are several options. There is a bus stop 6 blocks away that runs to the UW or downtown during rush hour. During off hours or weekends, you will likely need to walk or drive to the park and ride at 145th and I5 (1 mile away) were you can catch an express bus north or south. Other Things to NotePlease note that while pets are not allowed, we do have a dog so if you are severely allergic, this is probably not the place for you.

The SpaceOur place feels private and secluded while being in a residential neighborhood. Your 180 sq. ft. room holds a comfy queen-sized bed, a small desk/dresser, good lighting, storage, and privacy shades. This is a non-smoking, no pets household. Wi-Fi, private bath with soaking tub and shower, living room with woodstove and lots of good books to read. A sometimes sunny and always private back deck. Lots of flowers (in season). Off-street parking. We will make available a self-serve breakfast, tailored to your preferences (granola, yogurt, eggs, fruit, toast, coffee/tea, etc.--sorry, no meat...). Open to discussing your use of kitchen, if you're staying for several days. We are, by nature, curious and interested in sharing our lives with guests and learning about other people. We understand that relationships are a dance between being sociable and needing privacy. This is a very walk-able area, with not much car traffic. It's a longish one-mile walk to Richmond Beach Saltwater Park on Puget Sound. It's about a half-mile to Shoreview Park, where the natural habitat and trails along Boeing Creek have been nicely preserved and maintained. We are 2 blocks from Starbucks, the post office, and a QFC supermarket. We are one block from a King County Metro bus stop. By bus, we are 6 minutes from Shoreline Community College and 17 minutes from Northgate Shopping Center, where you can transfer to buses traveling to UW and downtown Seattle. Chris is a tai chi practitioner, teacher, and therapist; Rick is a carpenter, musician, and fixer of all things broken. When we are not off at work, we enjoy gardening, meditating, listening to NPR and music of all kinds, cooking and eating healthy food, and sharing time with friends and family. We have four grown offspring and, while missing their nearby presence, savor the quiet that has come with an empty nest. Along with the quiet, we have space that we would like to share with folks who are looking for some friendly serenity. Guest AccessGuests have access to the first floor of the house: living room, with a wood stove that sometimes supplements our gas furnace; sitting room, with space for meditation or yoga; bathroom, dedicated to your private room; kitchen/sunroom (we can discuss meal prep options); and the deck and backyard sitting areas. Interaction with GuestsWe are pretty flexible in this regard: we love having people around, but are also good at taking taking cues from our guests, should they prefer some solitude. The NeighborhoodAs walkers, we appreciate that we are within a mile of Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, the King County Library and Shoreview Park, while still being a block from a Metro bus stop and about 2 miles from the Shoreline Center. Getting AroundOur home is a block from the Metro bus stop on Richmond Beach Road and 3rd Avenue NW. Other Things to NoteAs relative "newbies" to this experience (as hosts), we appreciate the opportunity to get to know and to learn from our guests. Our intention is to provide comfort in a low-key, low profile way.

The SpaceOur colorful guest room opens into the backyard with flowers, squirrels, birds and daytime sun (when around). It isn't a huge yard, but it offers privacy from neighbor's view. The room has an Ikea futon couch, that converts into a very comfortable queen size bed. There is also a dresser with hangers for your clothes, 2 small couches, tables and chairs. We provide clean bedding, towels (and toiletries if needed). It's home to many plants, books and musical toys from around the world. Guest AccessThis is a quirky low tech home; bathroom, kitchen, dining and living room are shared. There is internet access for your wi-fi devices, but no cable TV; washer and dryer available for use; we have pots and pans and plenty of spices and herbs, but no dish washer or micro wave. We have hiking guides for Seattle, the Cascades and the Olympic National Park you are welcome to use, some camping gear, juggling clubs, yoga mat and lots of books. There is also a shrine room to meditate in; we are Buddhists, but respect all religions and traditions. Interaction with GuestsWe both have odd work schedules and come home late on our work days. We like our guests to be independent and treat our home as they would treat their own home. We try to minimize our carbon foot print, compost, recycle and consume ethically. We strive to be mindful of our guests' need for privacy, but are also happy to share stories and a home cooked meal if we are home all together. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is North City/ Shoreline. A Safeway supermarket, a Walgreens drug store and the post office are 2 blocks away; there are several inexpensive restaurants nearby, King County Library is within walking distance, a Goodwill store is 1 1/2 miles away. During school days several school buses stop near our house. It's an ethnically diverse residential area; it's safe to walk around, some parks are within walking distance. There isn't much nightlife to speak of in this area of town. If you like to be close to hip hang-outs and trendy bars this place is not for you. Getting AroundWe are 3 minutes away from I-5; 20 minutes by car to downtown Seattle (if traffic is smooth). Several bus lines stop one block away; it takes 15 minutes by bus to Northgate Transit Station and the mall. From there it's another 15 - 25 minutes to downtown by bus. We are about 10 minutes by bicycle away from the Burke Gilman trail and the Interurban bike trail. Other Things to NoteThere is a fire station close by, occasionally you might hear the sirens of an aid car, but usually they don't switch the sound on until they are past this block.

The SpaceThis is a very quiet neighborhood within walking distance of a large park with spectacular views of the sound as well as access to the beach. The entire house is beautifully decorated. In addition to the deck you can enjoy the beautiful gardens, both in front and back of the house. You will notice an unusual attention to detail in both the house and the gardens. Grandparents visiting their family in the neighborhood can have their grandchildren spend a night to two. Guest AccessGuests have access to the main floor kitchen for a simple breakfast. Access for other meals can be arranged. Guests also have access to the living room and dining area. In addition they can use the balcony which has a lovely view of the Sound. I prefer that you eat in the kitchen or at the dining room table, rather than in your room. Interaction with GuestsMy bedroom and bathroom are on the second floor. I generally only use the main floor for cooking. I try to take my clues from my guests as to how much interaction they prefer. The NeighborhoodWe have a lovely park with play equipment only a block away. Tennis courts are right around the corner. A bit further but still within an easy walk is the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park which has access to the beach. Both have spectacular views of Puget Sound. There are two good restaurants within a short walk and a funky bar a bit further away. Getting AroundThere is a bus stop two blocks from the house. However, you will have to transfer buses to reach downtown Seattle. I am willing to give you a ride to the Northgate park and ride from which you have a straight shot by bus into Seattle. Most of my guests have cars to use while they are here but I will try to help you if you don't have a car, depending on my schedule. Other Things to NotePlease let me know about any problems or anything that you need. I am resourceful and can solve most problems but only if I know about them while you are here.
