Our home is in an urban and eclectic neighborhood at the nexus of DC, Silver Spring and Takoma Park. Two Redline Metro stations are one-mile away--Takoma & Silver Spring. Our community is family oriented and quiet but with all the urban resources you need to easily shop, dine-out, see a film and more, many are within walking distance. The SpaceThis house has two bedrooms, each with a double bed. The bedrooms are located on the second floor of the house. There are two bathrooms, one upstairs with full bath and one downstairs with a shower. If you need extra sleeping space for kids/friends, the living room sofa also pulls out into a double bed. We have been working to make this lovely old farmhouse into an environmentally friendly home with solar panels, wildlife-friendly landscaping, vegetable and fruit gardens, energy efficient appliances, and providing some of our heat with local waste wood. We have a large vegetable and flower garden. You are welcome to use veggies from the garden. In the summer this should include tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants; in the winter there may still be kale, lettuce, and root vegetables. We have a large eat-in kitchen that is well-stocked with dishes, pots and pans, etc. We do not have a dishwasher. Guest AccessWe don't own a TV. Guests will have access to WiFi. Interaction with GuestsWe will be out of town during the time the house is available. We will give you our contact information as well as contact information for some friends in town who are familiar with our house, in case anything comes up. The NeighborhoodWe love that our neighborhood is quiet and friendly while being so convenient to the amenities of city life. You'll find it's easy to get into Washington, DC, but there is also lots of good food and entertainment right here in Silver Spring and Takoma Park. Getting AroundOur house is 1 mile from both Takoma Park and Silver Spring stations on the red line of DC's Metro (subway) system. The walk to Takoma is especially nice, through a neighborhood with lots of old Victorian homes. If you don't want to walk, buses stop about 2 blocks away from the house. You can also park at both metro stations, for a fee (Silver Spring is free on weekends). Use the WMATA trip planner to check how long it will take to get where you want to go by Metro. Distances to some key stops, from Takoma: Union Station (Capitol) - 11 min. Farragut North (White House) - 19 min. National Airport - 40 min. College Park/UMD - 20 min. If you're driving, beware that relatively short distances can take a long time to drive in the DC metro area, so what looks close on the map may not feel close once you're here. You can use Takoma Middle School (right down the street) as your starting point if you want to get driving time estimates from our house. Other Things to NoteMost people come to DC to see the sights, but there are also some amazing natural spaces scattered around the city! We've put together a binder of maps for some of our favorite hiking locations.

The SpaceThis guest room has a queen-sized bed, a large closet, a large desk, a night table, and a full bathroom next door. There are two other guest bedrooms in the house, each with twin beds. This space is perfect for quiet study, work or a relaxing vacation. And if you need fast Internet speed--mine tested at 83 mbps for downloading and 91 mbps for uploading in January, 2016! Note for AIRP participants: My AIRP guests have all been extremely focused on their studies. I think they have found that my quiet house lends itself well to both individual and, for groups that have reserved 2 rooms, group study sessions. I am quiet and unobtrusive, and want to support your efforts to learn as much as you can while you're here. Our neighborhood, midway between downtown Silver Spring and Takoma Park, Maryland--and also near the DC border--is quiet, friendly and close-knit. These three areas each have their attractions. It's just a short stroll to the heart of downtown Silver Spring where you can catch a movie at the American Film Institute/Silver Theater, shop at the Safeway or Whole Foods, work or relax at Starbucks or one of the 3 independent coffee shops, go to the Farmer's Market on Saturdays, or dine at any of the many independen ethnic or chain restaurants. Both downtown Silver Spring and Takoma Park have vibrant commercial districts and are fun to explore. Takoma Park's downtown is a single block, with only independent shops --some of them charming and quirky--with the vibe of an "urban village". Our house is down the street from the Takoma Park branch of Montgomery College. There are 3 parks nearby, 2 public libraries within walking distance, an ice skating rink, and bike trails, too (just ask if you'd like to borrow my bike!) And of course, there are so many things to do in the city! The Takoma or Silver Spring Metrorail stations are less than a mile's walk (25 minutes, max!) There's almost always on-street parking available right in front of the house. This is a very walkable and friendly neighborhood, with easy access to bike paths, hiking trails, parks, and residential and commercial streets. If you're interested in a long-term stay, perhaps for an internship, professional training, or fellowship, you are likely to find this central location well-suited to your needs. I'm sure you'll find both your room and the entire house comfortable and convenient for study, relaxation, and exploring downtown DC and Silver Spring. Guests have full access to all common areas of the house: the kitchen, living and dining rooms, basement (with laundry facilities), family room, and yards. I enjoy cooking for my guests on occasion and facilitating their stay here any way I can--perhaps a ride or recommendations for places to visit, for example. With rare exceptions, I will be there the entire time. I hope that your visit will be at a time when we're both free to have a few meals together and chat. If there's anything you need, please go ahead and ask...I'll try my best to help you however possible! Also, I have a medium-sized non-shedding hypoallergenic (to most people) dog. My dog is not allowed in guest rooms, and spends most of her time outside playing with the neighbor's dog. I warmly welcome people of all different races, ethnic backgrounds, religious and political beliefs, and sexual orientations, and hope that my guests feel the same way. Meeting people of varied backgrounds is one of the things I like most about being a host!

The SpaceWe are located in Silver Spring, Maryland less than a mile from the District of Columbia boundary and only a 7 minute walk from the Red Line Metro Silver Spring (subway) which arrives at Metro Center in 22 minutes. Our home, a bungalow built in the 1920s, was renovated and expanded in 2010 and features a beautiful open kitchen with an eat-in counter on a large island, a nice continuous grate gas stove, gorgeous countertops, cork floors, a Kitchen Aid food processor and many other kitchen gadgets, a sizable spice collection and a Sonos sound system (giving you access to our 650 mainly rock and alternative albums, Pandora and internet radio) which adjoins the family room with large screen HD TV. Located downstairs is a home theater with 52" HD television and music system, as well as a Wii system and air hockey table. We also have a new LG washer and dryer (and, of course, help yourself to our detergent and cleaning products). A screen porch overlooking the peaceful backyard, is next to a small deck with a large natural gas grill. Our home has 3 full baths and 2 powder rooms, with 2 of the baths including soaking tubs (one bubble tub, one jucuzzi tub). The dining room table can be extended to comfortably seat as many as 12. You will find the house nicely furnished and comfortable, with a powerful geothermal system which cools the house during Washington's warm summers. In terms of the beds, we have 2 queen size beds, 1 double bed, one single bed, a double futon bed and a high quality double sleep sofa (Crate & Barrel). Our driveway holds up to 3 vehicles. We also have Wifi, high speed internet and are happy for your to share our iMac and Gateway PC. Additionally, we have well-maintained road and mountain bikes we are happy to share with people who will be careful to ensure their return! We enjoy having a truly close-in, convenient location while also having a good-sized, well-maintained yard and a vegetable and herb garden. Feel free to enjoy the many tomatoes ripening in August! To be clear, this is our only home and we rent it while we plan to be away for an extended period of time. But "our stuff" will still be in the house. To make your stay convenient, we will ensure that you have closet and drawer space available in the bedrooms, ample space in the refrigerator and freezer and otherwise make our home comfortable for your arrival. Apart from the many attractions of Washington, our location offers Silver Spring's downtown including numerous restaurants, a music club (The Fillmore), the American Film Institute and a large multiscreen theater a 10 minute walk away. There is also a Whole Foods Market in downtown Silver Spring. We have a dog and 2 cats. While we will care for our dog outside of the house, we will generally ask that you permit our across-the-street neighbor to care for our cats. Peter and Mary have lived in their home for 20 years and would be delighted to share with you their extensive knowledge concerning Washington's attractions, transportation and logistical issues, restaurant suggestions, as well as where to go for local services. This is a relatively recent listing so we don't yet have many reviews. We aim to make your stay a very pleasant one where you will be happy to give us a positive one!

The SpaceThis room has a twin bed, a large closet, a desk by a window overlooking the backyard, a night table, and a full bathroom right across the hall. This space is perfect for quiet study, work or a relaxing vacation. And if you need fast Internet speed--mine tested at 83 mbps for downloading and 91 mbps for uploading in January, 2016! Guest AccessGuests have full access to the kitchen, living room, 2 shared bathrooms, family room, yards, porch and deck, basement (with laundry facilities) and two bathrooms--a half-bathroom on the first level and a full one on the second level. The two bathrooms are shared, as up to 3 bedrooms are rented through AirBnb. Interaction with GuestsI hope that your visit will be at a time when we're both free to have a few meals together and chat. But I'm flexible--it may well be the case that either or both of us are too busy for that! Note for AIRP participants: My AIRP guests have all been extremely focused on their studies. I think they have found that my quiet house lends itself well to both individual and, for groups that have reserved 2-3 rooms, group study sessions. I am quiet and unobtrusive, and want to support your efforts to learn as much as you can while you're here. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood, midway between downtown Silver Spring and Takoma Park, Maryland--and also close to the DC border--is quiet, friendly and close-knit. These three areas each have their own unique attractions. It's just a short stroll to downtown Silver Spring to catch a movie at the American Film Institute/Silver Theater, shop at the Safeway or Whole Foods, go to the Farmer's Market on Saturdays, or dine at one of the many ethnic or chain restaurants. Takoma Park's downtown is a single block, with only independent businesses --some of them charming and quirky--it has the vibe of an "urban village". Our house is down the street from the Takoma Park branch of Montgomery College. There are 3 parks nearby, and bike trails, too (just ask if you'd like to borrow my bike!) And of course, there are so many things to do in the city! Getting AroundThe Takoma or Silver Spring Metrorail stations are less than a mile's walk (25 minutes, max!) There's almost always on-street parking available right in front of the house. This is a very walkable neighborhood, with easy access to biking/hiking trails, parks, and residential and commercial streets. Other Things to NoteIf you're interested in a long-term stay, perhaps for an internship, professional training, or fellowship, you are likely to find this central location well-suited to your needs. I'm sure you'll find both your room and the entire house comfortable and convenient for study, relaxation, and exploring downtown DC and Silver Spring. I warmly welcome people of all different races, ethnic backgrounds, religious and political beliefs, and sexual orientations, and hope that my guests feel the same way. Meeting people of varied backgrounds is one of the things I like most about being a host!
