The NeighborhoodTwelve miles off Maryland's Eastern Shore, three small islands- collectively known as Smith Island- pepper the Chesapeake Bay. Home to the tiny villages of Ewell, Rhodes Point and Tylerton, the islands are eight miles long and four miles wide with fewer than 300 residents. Long visited by Native Americans, the tiny island of the Chesapeake were mapped and named by Captain John Smith in June 1608. The original settlers were from Cornwall via the mainland of Virginia and arrived in the late 17th century. The island's economy is based on harvesting the bountiful seafood of the bay.... crabs, oysters and rock fish and it is this endeavor that has preserved a way of life with little change for the last three centuries. The locals have an accent...a slight English lilt warmed by a southern drawl...often referred to as Tidewater English. Getting AroundThe cottage has two bikes. You can rent a golf cart and Kayak but most things are within walking distance. We can arrange for a local waterman to take you out through the marsh and to the adjacent islands. We can arrange for you to explore a Crab Shanty where the exotic and much desired Soft Shell Crab are nurtured. Other Things to NoteThere are four wonderful restaurant options on Smith Island plus we have arranged for local women to cook and deliver fabulous home cooked meals to the cottage. We will help you arrange this.

The SpaceThis is a non-smoking house. Interaction with GuestsI am available at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), unless I am on the island- you will know if I am there. The NeighborhoodJust being out and chatting with locals can be inspiring. They are friendly and kind. Used to be tons of feral cats- now a few, turkeys roam, ducks roam..then if you walk by the marsh... so many beautiful marsh birds to see. I recommend Harborside for eating out... I always get the tilapia sandwich. It is good but there isn't much to compare to... you can get crab cakes and soft shells in season too. Check out the extra services sheet I sent. Those things are all very unique to the island. Getting AroundI have left bikes for using- either out front or in shed. Also a canoe which can hold up to 4 adults easily. There are some children toys vehicles in she too. Walking will easily get you everywhere. Other Things to NoteThere is no real grocery on the island! However, before you get to the boat, when you enter Crisfield, there is a Foodlion Grocery. Fully stocked. Bring your cloth shopping bags (from home) to use for loading efficiency. You can get bare staples on the island! I will be giving you a Welcome Letter with lots of information after you book. Including where to get crabs, kayaks, cakes boat tours....

The SpaceThis three bedroom house is our vacation home. There are two bedrooms on the main floor, one with a queen bed and one with twin bunk beds. The upstairs master bedroom has a king size bed and excellent water views. Guest AccessGuests have access to all areas of the house and are welcome to make themselves at home. Interaction with GuestsWe do not live there full time, this is a vacation property. Our rental is more like borrowing a friend's vacation home. There will be no mint in your pillow or fresh flowers when you arrive. :) We ask that you leave the house as tidy as you would leave your own. The house may be musty, so be prepared to open the windows upon arrival to air the house. If you have an emergency, please contact me via phone right away. The NeighborhoodSmith Island is a unique place. It's a very small town, as one might imagine, and is accessible only by boat. The community is tight-knit, and everyone knows everyone else. This is not a beach town, in fact there is no beach! The island is great for bird watching, kayaking or canoeing, going for long walks, photographers and artists, and others who just want to step away from it all. Before booking, please visit v(URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundThere is no public transit on the island, but you won't need it! The entire town is walkable, and if you want to walk to neighboring Rhodes Point it will take about 15 minutes walking. There are few cars on the island, and there are golf carts and bicycles available to rent during from about May 1st-Labor Day. You can bring kayaks and bikes on the ferries, just be sure to check with your boat captain ahead of time. Other Things to NoteYou must arrange to take a ferry to the island. They are not large car ferries, but simply working boats. Please call Captain Otis Tyler or Captain Terry Laird to arrange travel. You must leave your vehicle in Crisfield during your visit in one of the designated lots. The ferry captain you travel with can provide you with details on where to park. Be prepared to spend a few dollars a night for parking. You can bring as much as you want on the ferry, but they will usually charge you a little for freight. That varies widely, and there is not really a set price. Estimate about $2 per box, but there are no charges for personal items--like ones you'd carry on a flight. You can always ask the captain ahead of time to get an idea of the cost. The ferry costs $20/person each way. It is pricey, but it's the way they make a living. The ferries aren't subsidized by the state or county. Cell phone service is spotty on the island, so be prepared to be completely unplugged during your stay! There is a store on the island for emergency items, but pack all food and items you would need, and do not expect to be able to purchase anything. I recommend that everyone bring their groceries over with them. There is a Food Lion in Crisfield on Rt. 413. I pack groceries in a large tupperware container as it's easiest to move on and off the boat. There are basic household items available at the house; salt, pepper, oil, advil, bandaids, (probably no sugar, as we often battle sugar ants in the kitchen in the summer and I throw it out whenever it's left there). The hot summer months bring lots of bugs. The mosquitos are brutal, as well as two lovely varieties of biting flies. We recommend travel in late spring/early summer and early fall if you are opposed to "battling the elements." In the summer (memorial day to labor day) there is a place where you can rent bikes and golf carts to explore the island, but no one has yet offered kayak or canoe rentals. You could bring either over on the ferry with you, just let the captain know ahead of time. Also, be sure to check the ferry schedule and pricing before you book! This well kept waterfront smoke free home is the perfect getaway for one or two families. It is only 2 hours from Annapolis. The direct views of the Chesapeake Bay are spectacular from the living room, kitchen, front porch, as well as the 2 master bedroom suites on the second floor. The house is located on 1 acre of private and very quiet property. The two master suites each have a queen bed, and a day bed. They share a 6 foot whirlpool tub, with locking doors from each bedroom. The first floor bedroom also has a queen bed and full bath. The living room also has a sleep sofa. Water views of the Bay are fabulous, whether in the house, or relaxing on our hammock in the shade of the trees, or comfortably sitting on our 80 foot pier. In addition, the Bay offers breathtaking sunsets and relaxing breezes, while watching sailboats, fishing boats and ships cruise along the water. This home is located in the fishing village of Deal Island on the Tangier Sound. If you rise early on a foggy morning, you may experience hearing our loon that loves to swim around the pier. The afternoon brings in the pelicans as they fly overhead and the evenings offer wonderful stargazing. Deal Island has one of the largest concentrations in the state of herons, egrets and ibis. The house is located in a very private sub-division, just a half mile from the deal Island Bridge and marina. You are welcome to bring your boat, kayak or canoe or use our sit in and sit upon kayaks. The end of the property has a small beach, perfect for launching your kayak, canoe or just going for a swim. Both ends of the island offer public boat ramps, where you can see local skipjack and fishing captains. You can paddle to little Deal Island, the marinas, or explore miles of waterways through the 13,000 acres of tidal marshes. Charter fishing and cruises can be reserved with boat captains at Wenona and Deal Island harbours. We can give you local info on renting motor boats, kayaks and canoes. You will also enjoy hiking, fishing or crabbing. This is a great place to relax and decompress from the fast pace of city life. Guests are encouraged to stock up on groceries at the Food Lion in Princess Anne, which also has several Eastern shore-style restaurants, as well as fast food choices. We can also recommend Lucky's Last Chance Grill for those odds and ends, which is ½ mile before the Deal Island Bridge.
