You can expect to live in close proximity with the native flora and fauna of the Great Western Woodlands, especially Boorabbin National Park.
This is a remote location, 160km from Kalgoorlie, and our nearest neighbours are 35 km to the west and 95 km to the east. That is why our accommodation includes all meals: it is a long way to the shops.
We are surrounded by bushland, with wide horizons of trees, salt-lakes, granite rock outcrops, kwongan heaths, and big skies.
The nearest public transport is the TransWA Prospector train that travels daily Perth to Kalgoorlie. Two airlines fly to Kalgoorlie. We would meet you at an agreed destination to complete your journey by car to Koora Retreat. Travel by road (435 km) takes about 5.5hours from Perth, along Great Eastern Highway. You can hire a vehicle from Southern Cross or Kalgoorlie.
Our place is unique as it is the only remote wilderness retreat centre in Australia. Koorarawalyee, the abandoned railway townsite where Koora Retreat is located, is situated on freehold land in Boorabbin National Park. The railway is also abandoned, the last train travelling on the narrow gauge line in 1971.
We urge you to plan at least four days here, to receive the best understanding of the bush and Australian desert spirituality. Your hosts, Peter and Anna are both licensed Anglcian Priests and you are able to join us for morning and evening prayer if you are interested. Sharing this discipline is not required, but it is what shapes our days. Guest AccessYou will access the camp fire, refectory, camp kitchen and library, our experience of the area and its wonders, as well as the great open spaces of the Great Western Woodlands. Interaction with GuestsWe will share meals with guests, and attend to the shared facilites, offer wilderness exposure and trips to places of interest, as requested, or leave guests to their own devices if preferred. The NeighborhoodThe enveloping wilderness is beautiful for its variety of environments, wealth of plant and animal species, and remoteness from any other people. You will slow down to contemplative pace and find the amazing beauty in small desert species and huge desert environments. Getting AroundTransport by train to Southern Cross or Kalgoorlie requires a vehicle transfer to Koora Retreat, as does flight to Perth or Kalgoorlie. Speak to us about the options. We have four-wheel drive vehicles, mountain bikes and a mobility scooter for local adventures. Other Things to NoteWe are the only accommodation available in the heart of the Great Western Woodlands of WA. We offer access and knowhow for local wild camping and experiencing the wilderness at close quarters.
