We manage a large country cottage in the back of Soufriere in Dominica. In our 0.85-acre garden; we have a separate small cottage that can be rented even when the main house is occupied by us or other guests. This smaller cottage is affectionately known as The Birdhouse, since it strongly resembles one. It is perfect to overnight in for an adventurous couple looking to explore the Dominican Wilderness and all that it has to offer.
The Birdhouse features a comfortable double bed, side tables, a ceiling fan, reading lights, a disco ball, a wardrobe/closet, a lockable door, an amazing view of the mountains and garden and plenty of fresh mountain air. The sides of the cottage are 50% metal sheeting and 50% mosquito netting, so it is just like being outside. Don't worry, you won't get wet. The cottage was constructed on a large and stable base of local stones, using treated lumber, bamboo, metal sheets and concrete by a Swiss artist, who built it as his guesthouse. Think of it as a super strong tent. The roof is made of galvanized metal, with four clear plastic roofing sheets in between. These large skylights let you enjoy the sun/moon shine as you lay down to sleep. You will be serenaded to sleep by hundreds of crickets and tree frogs who put on a free concert nightly. The local fireflies start their daily show at 7 pm for your enjoyment.
Rental of this cottage includes the following: full linens, towels, showers, toilet, access to the garden and the seasonal fresh fruit that grows there, plus the use of the amazing BBQ area, equipped with a burner and fire place. There you can make your basic meals and relax in the hammocks or lounge chairs as you watch the birds play in the garden. You will need to act as if you are camping, since there is no refrigerator, oven or any of these modern kitchen items normally found in a house. We will provide you with a “cooking box that includes basics, such as pots, pans, dishes, cups, glasses, utensils, etc. If you need any other items or services to make your stay more comfortable, just ask. We are here to help.
The La Bou retreat is located at the end of a dirt road that goes slightly up hill, so unless you love walking, a rental jeep is recommended. We recommend a small 4x4, such as a Toyota RAV4 or a Suzuki Escudo. The nearest bus stop is a 15-minute walk away, in the center of town. From there, buses leave at all hours of the day to all corners of the island. They are clean, fast, and inexpensive and therefore offer a good alternative to renting a car.
We are located right next to the Soufriere Sulphur Springs, so you can soak in the hot tubs day or night!
The nearest grocery store is only a 5-minute drive down the hill, as is the nearest Restaurant and Bar.
The beach is only 1km away. Our favorite spot, where you can swim, snorkel, relax in hot water, have a rum punch, get a massage or simply watch the sunset is at Bubble Beach Spa located right in front of the famous church in town.
La Bou is the name of this charming and very private retreat in the hills above Soufriere, Dominica. This retreat is comprised of 3 separate buildings set in the jungle on a 0.85 acre plot in a large valley. The main house houses the kitchen, the pantry, the office and the main bedroom. The second building is The Bird House Cottage, which is actually the second bedroom. The third building is a custom built entertainment area that features the large BBQ with kitchen sink and running water, one burner for making side dishes, a fire place with free fire wood provided and a large dining room table that comfortably seats six.
These buildings were all designed and built by a Swiss artist and his wife, who spend years dreaming up the lay-out and lovingly hand-building everything. The details of the architecture are astounding. The lot is a slightly sloping part of a large valley. The property is located at the end of a dirt road, so there is no through traffic. The neighboring area is filled with local gardens, jungle, hiking trails, sulphur springs, etc. This is a truly unique Nature retreat. Town is only a 10 minute drive down the hill and so is the ocean. The nearest Bar is only a 5 minute walk away. There is no TV or Internet at La Bou. Water is provided by the rain and electricity comes directly from the sun, by use of solar panels. Internet is available at the nearby CarRods Gardens Bar & Restaurant 1 km down the road. They have great Wifi and great food and drinks. Open everyday but Mondays.
