The SpaceThis property includes two sweet and beautiful calico cats for critter patrol in and around the old farmhouse. If you are allergic, please be sure to bring medication. We cannot guarantee a dander-free environment. Guest AccessThe house is yours! And feel free to spend time in the schoolhouse set up as a large living room. A great place to relax, but older and just as fragile as the house. Please be kind to it. IMPORTANT: Since we are in a rural area, our Wi-Fi is from a satellite dish, not DSL, so you DO NOT HAVE UNLIMITED ACCESS. Please keep your devices on "airplane mode" when not in use. Overuse of wi-fi results in depleted GBs, slower connecting speeds or complete loss of connection. Interaction with GuestsWe are just two more miles up the road and accessible for any needs, questions or emergencies you might have. The NeighborhoodThe farmhouse was previously owned by Denver and Edith Wallbrown and all the neighbors knew and loved them. If you ever get lost, just tell them you're staying at Denver Wallbrown's, and they'll get you home. Getting AroundThe town of Spencer is about a 20 minute drive. On the way, you can rent kayaks at Charles Fork Lake for $10/person/hour. In town, check out The Antique Mall and Chestnut Ridge Artist Colony. Breakfast is all day at the Country Table and the waitresses are great. We like lunch at Church Street Diner (healthy) or the Queen Bee (greasy-spoon - best milkshakes in town). Try dinner at LaFinca Mexican restaurant. They love it when you practice your Spanish with them! As for the food, it's blander than you might expect as they attempt to cater to the WV palette. See a movie at the Robey Theatre, the longest continuously operating theater in the country (or at least, this side of the Mississippi). All the shop owners are friendly and helpful. Charleston, our state capital, is an hour south. Lots of great food, shopping and attractions. Minor league baseball in the summer. Flatwoods is 2 hours away...The Outlet Mall includes the famous Fiestaware pottery. Other Things to NoteNeighbors are friendly, helpful if needed, and all will respect your privacy. If you're on the front porch, feel free to wave to the occasional passersby and you'll get a smile and wave in return. They love the old house, and many have stories about attending the school.

The SpaceThe space includes two twin bed and a desk, dresser, and closet. Perfect for both long and short stays or as overflow from the double room. Guest AccessThe guest has access to the whole house, including kitchen privileges. There is also a lovely, large backyard, wrap around deck and front porch, which the guest is welcome to use. Interaction with GuestsI work full-time, but am always available by phone. I'm happy to show you around Charleston on the weekends or point you in the right direction! The NeighborhoodThe house is in a residential neighborhood on the West Side of Charleston. It is very safe, quiet and only two miles from downtown and the interstate. Getting AroundThe house is accessible by car only, but there is plenty of parking! The closest public transportation is a mile away. There is only one taxi company (which does not have great reviews unfortunately - I have never used it myself) and we very recently got Uber. More recent guests have used Uber to get to and from our home, downtown and the airport. Other Things to NotePlease, please communicate what time you will be here. Check-in is 4pm-10pm, which means we can be available within those times. It does NOT mean we will be waiting from 4pm-10pm for you to get here (we have to run errands, walk dogs, go to the gym etc. in the evenings as well). We understand that things come up, but if your schedule changes let us know as soon as it does so we aren't waiting around. Check-in is LATEST 10:00pm unless you have made prior arrangements with us before your booking. The washing machine and dryer are available to guests who stay a week or more. We do not provide coffee or breakfast, but guests are welcome to make their own. We have two dogs: a goldendoodle and a standard poodle. Neither one shed and are considered "hypoallergenic" breeds. The dogs have free range of the house (but not your room) and are very, very friendly. They are low-key and will leave you alone unless you want to be snuggled with.

The SpaceLocated inside the historic "Linn" building on the west side. This is the only loft that is complete, the others are still under renovation. Your stay is important to me so I have made sure that your area is clean from any construction. However, please excuse any glimpses of renovation you may come across. The Linn is a historic building and much of it's character is being preserved, so if you enjoy reclaimed and clean but rough around the edges you are a perfect guest! If you are looking for polished and up to date everything, this Loft may not be for you. While free wifi is provided, there is no TV. But there are lots of books! Guest AccessOwner will deliver the entrance key on your arrival. At checkout, guests can lock the front door and then drop the house keys in the mailbox. Interaction with GuestsI will not be on site during your stay, however I am easily accessible by cell phone if you have questions about anything. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is up and coming and has a lot of character. Most of the buildings on the same block as The Linn are under renovation, which means there is lots of exciting retail and small businesses coming our way soon! Other Things to NoteMeter parking only. However, meters are free after 6pm. There is an easily accessible free parking lot just around the block on Washington Ave. as well.

We provide water/ice refills, and are available 24/7 for emergencies. The NeighborhoodThe Crash Pad is at the end of the Earth, the last human dwelling for miles. We live just a short walk up the road, but you have only hilly wilderness behind you. All your other neighbors are furry, feathery or scaly. Getting AroundWHILE HIKING: No need to stay on the trails, but if you go to the ridges, come down the same side of the mountain. The hills are a convoluted labyrinth and its easier to get lost than you might think. If you do lose your way, follow a stream/bed out to a road or house and ask directions. Everyone is helpful, most are kind and polite about it. Other Things to NoteWe have 2 Great Pyrenees dogs who roam the property to ward off predators from our chickens. They are nocturnal and WILL bark at night. Please know, they are doing their jobs and including YOU in their realm of protection. Sleep easy knowing you are safe. They are friendly to all our guests and will not harm you in any way. Male: Otto, Female: Clara Other Things to Note ANIMALS you may see, hear or encounter: song birds, ducks, herons, owls, hawks, vultures, wild turkeys, squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, skunks, possum, snakes, turtles, frogs, deer, rabbits, foxes, coyotes or the occasional stray horse. Signs of a black bear (scat) have been in the area, but no sightings in years. BUGS: cicadas, crickets HARMFUL INSECTS: ticks, mosquitoes, bees, chiggers BUG SPRAY RECOMMENDED FOR ALL SEASONS - Lyme disease is in our area, contracted only by the deer tick (not the dog tick or the star tick), and only if it's been attached to your skin for over 24 hours.

The SpaceThis room has beautiful large windows and wood floors. The double bed is very comfortable. A vanity and closet are available for your use. For longer stays a dresser is available. Guest AccessThe guest has access to the whole house, including kitchen privileges. There is also a lovely, large backyard, wrap around deck and front porch, which the guest is welcome to use. Interaction with GuestsWe both work full-time, but I (Kara) am always available by phone. I'm happy to show you around Charleston on the weekends or point you in the right direction! The NeighborhoodThe house is in a residential neighborhood on the west side. It is about 2 miles from downtown Charleston and is very quiet and safe.

The SpaceBy "remote," we mean, "off-road." To avoid damaging your car on the way up the steep, rocky hill, we'll meet you at the bottom (where you can park it safely) and we'll take you up in our truck. At the end of your stay, you can get a ride, walk down with your stuff, or we'll take it for you and you can hike it down hands-free. Whatever works best for you. If the forecast looks like road conditions will be impossible for us to get you up or down the hill with the truck or 4-wheeler (ATV), and you're still hooked on the cabin-idea, we're happy to lead you on the short hike to it. Otherwise, we invite you to check out our other 2 listings, "Quaint Farmhouse in the hills," or "the Crash Pad." Both have easy vehicle access for any weather, and we can discuss a comparable price. Guest AccessNO ELECTRIC OR RUNNING WATER = should be considered "Fancy Camping" (glamping) HEAT/LIGHT: one propane heater, lanterns, flashlights. After that, you're on your own! Upon request, each evening at sundown, we can bring more water and ice and check if there's anything else you need. The NeighborhoodAlthough you may not be able to see your human neighbors for the hills and trees, you still have them around you. We are a tight knit community with some related families. Everyone is extremely helpful, most are friendly and polite about it. All your closest neighbors are furry, feathery or scaly. Getting AroundHIKING IN THE HILLS - to avoid getting lost, just remember --If you go up any hill to the ridge, come down the same side. If you DO get lost, go down to the valley, follow a stream bed/river, and you'll eventually come to a house where you can ask for directions.
