The SpaceNestled in the hills of the Barossa Valley, this charming little cottage is a slice of country heaven. From the antique double bed to the unforgettable bathroom, complete with a claw foot tub, chandelier, luxury toiletries and wood fire, to the old farm kitchen, (very old, so no running water, which is good news, because that means guests can't do the dishes- I do them in the main house), you will fall in love. This is Australian country at its best, with cattle grazing across the road among the giant old gum trees, often sharing their pasture with the local kangaroos. Next to the cows can always be found the sheep. Listen to the ewes and their lambs calling out to each other during lambing season, (June/July). The bird life is rich and varied, from the colourful parrots to the sulphur crested cockatoos to the rainbow bee eaters. Your don't have to be a bird watcher to be delighted by the show Mother Nature puts on here! If you can bear to get out of the comfy antique bed, with its fresh cotton sheets, a delicious breakfast of local produce will be waiting for you. Dishes containing figs, mulberries, quinces, strawberries and rhubarb are often to be found on the table, depending on the season. The homemade muesli is to die for and baked goods are usually festooning the table too- you are on holidays- who cares about the waistline! For a bit later in the day, there is usually a lovely chilled Riesling or rose' in the fridge for the summer nights and in winter, curl up on the sofa with a glass of very good red. The Barossa Valley has a long history of fine food and wine and it is proudly showcased here. The famous Henschke Winery is close by- head over there for a spot of wine tasting and be prepared to be thoroughly spoiled by the girls at Cellar Door. The lovely little town of Eden Valley is about 10 minutes drive south. Its old pub is delightful and Eden Valley's scenic lookout will take your breath away. A 10 minute drive west will see you in Angaston and the start of the amazing array of wineries, cafes, bakeries, butchers and restaurants that the Barossa is so famous for. You may need a brisk walk down Pennys Road afterwards to clear your head and burn off a few calories!
