            5br Country House
Clifton Hall is one of Barbados’ oldest, largest and grandest great houses. Its fascinating history as a plantation begins in 1656 with its first known owner, Ferdinand Paleologus. A direct descendent of Constantine, the last Byzantine (Greek) Emperor, Paleologus is buried nearby at St. John’s church. Clifton Hall appears in Robert Schomburgk’s 1848 classic, ‘The History of Barbados,’ and its large and stately residence has been chronicled in such publications as ‘Historic Houses of Barbados,’ Country Life Magazine, Maco Caribbean Living, and The Spectator. Hundreds of people visited the house in 2015 and in 2014 when the Barbados National Trust featured it in their ‘Open House’ programme, describing it as a ‘gem’ of Barbados. This treasure was recently rescued from ruination by owners who have stylishly transformed the house for modern living and yet retained its historical character. Imagine what it was like to live in the 1600s but still enjoying the comforts of today. The living space is 13500 square feet including formal dining room with mahogany table holds 18 people, formal lounge, grand hallway, kitchen , TV room, outside patio, pool, 3 acres of beautiful gardens with mango trees and many others. Watch the monkeys as they pass the lawns in search of the fruit trees. relax and enjoy in a wonderful peaceful setting. The temperature here is always approx 3 degrees lower than the west or south coast.

A private path from the apartment offers access to the tranquil Gibbs Beach for fabulous swimming. Additional amenities include: golf course nearby, coastal, all bedrooms en-suite. Just a plane ride away lies the real fantasy island, Barbados. An island that gives a dreamlike, intimate feeling to your trip.Barbados is a truly phenomenal holiday destination, and geologically unique; a coral island, initially pushed from the sea as two separate land masses by volcanic activity many years ago. Over time these two land masses merged together creating the isle we now know as Barbados. Barbados lies on the boundary of the Caribbean and South American continental plates making it unlike any other Caribbean Island. Within the core of the island, made up mainly of coral sediment, numerous caves and underground lakes can be found. Arguably the most famous of these is Harrison’s Cave; a network of caves, waterfalls, pools and fantastic stalagmites and stalactites.Descendants of the indigenous Arawakan-speaking tribes tell that the original name for Barbados was ‘Ichirouganaim’ meaning ‘red land with white teeth.’ The reason for the later name Barbados is controversial; some believe that the Portuguese, en route to Brazil, were the first Europeans to come to the island. Others say that it was this Spanish which gave it the Spanish name ‘Los Barbudos’. The word Barbados means ‘bearded ones’ but it is really personal preference as to whether ‘bearded’ refers to the long, hanging routes of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia) indigenous to the island; to the allegedly bearded ‘Caribs’ who once inhabited the island; or, more romantically, to the foam spraying over the outlying reefs, giving the impression of a beard. When visiting Barbados, the first thing you are sure to notice are the gorgeous and renowned flat white sand beaches. On the west coast of Barbados, miles of coral shore beaches and fine white sands stretch along a hypnotising turquoise sea. The West Coast of Barbados is also fringed with countless breath-taking Coral Reefs to provide excellent snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities. The South Coast also offers something for everyone, and is a curious mixture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can swim in calm waters, snorkel over the inshore reefs and tidal pools, and at the southernmost tip of the island, you can windsurf. The East Coast of Barbados has fantastic and lively surfing opportunities, blown briskly by the strong and constant trade winds; the constant breeze of these trade winds give Barbados its mild and pleasant tropical climate. Along the east coast, huge Atlantic waves crash along the shore and so the beaches are better suited for walks and sun-bathing, with a few enchanting places to have a dip in the sea – as the waves break over rocks and reefs, small pools are formed close to shore – natural swimming pools!Inland Barbados is delightful to explore, enchantingly quiet and rural there are endless fields of sugar cane dotted with old plantation houses. Barbados has a rich and interesting history and has preserved and restored many of its historic buildings – you can visit a plantation house for a trip back in time, see the towering lighthouses that once led ships to safety, or explore the historic towns that are an important part of the island’s past and present. Whilst on Barbados, a taste of the island’s rum is a must! The isle has been producing rum for over 350 years, and it is recognised internationally for its quality. Many tours and taste sessions are available at the local distilleries. There are many activities to keep you occupied whilst on holiday in Barbados – for the more adventurous vacationer you can join ‘Jammin’ Catamaran cruises’ and choose swimming with turtles, snorkelling, fishing or diving. You can also embark upon a day or sunset private cruise, and there are a variety of undersea expeditions that are highly recommended and entirely unforgettable. Any shopping lovers will also delight in the unique boutiques found on the Island. Barbados crafts people are highly skilled, especially in the area of pottery – so when visiting the island be sure to look at the local handicrafts and art available! With so much to offer and more, an exclusive villa is the perfect base from which you can explore this delightful island. They are ideal for those who love to spend their days relaxing by the sea or taking part in a multitude of water sports which include snorkelling and scuba diving around the expansive off-shore coral reefs. As a Caribbean holiday destination Barbados is a stunning island with a plethora of entertainment, culture and cuisine to make your trip a once in a lifetime experience. Another truly unique quality to this enchanting island is the people. Barbadians, more often referred to as Bajans, are warm and friendly souls, always ready to greet you with a sincere smile. Barbados is guaranteed to make every vacationer feel welcome and accepted, by the time you leave you will feel as you are not only leaving the isle but a part of yourself in Barbados and will want to return again and again. It truly is a unique Caribbean paradise. Shhhh! What do you hear? Nothing but the east wind rustling the tall palms, the birds cheeping and peeping, perhaps our resident hens clucking, and the occasional rooster crowing in the distance. Listen hard and you may even hear the monkeys carrying on their own conversations, but overall, what strikes you is the marvelous Quiet! The Stables at Clifton Hall is found 1 km past the ancient St. John’s Parish Church which, itself, is located on Hackleton’s Cliff, high above the Atlantic where the eastern trade winds constantly blow. Containing over 2,200 square feet within its distinctive walls, this completely renovated “cottage” has been outfitted with only the best of luxury furnishings and YOU are invited to be among the first guests to call it your home-away-from-home! As the name suggests, in early days, “The Stables” cottage played a huge role on the plantation because it housed the mounts and carriages belonging to the family of the day and their guests. The stables – now YOUR cottage - served the 13,500 square foot plantation house known then and now as “Clifton Hall Great House”. The first confirmed mention of this pink confection dates all the way back to 1656! Clifton Hall Great House has a long and varied history, beginning as a 401 acre sugar plantation down through the centuries to the year 2009 when, as near derelict, the current owners rescued the property. With loving care and always mindful of the built heritage of this significant property, the owners turned the coral stone rubble walls, termite-riddled beams and original pieces that could be salvaged into the magnificent presence of today. (Please see for the complete Clifton Hall Great House story, or schedule an appointment to tour the great house and hear the entire story first hand.) The exterior walls of The Stable at Clifton Hall were constructed of the same coral stone as the Great House. You can see the original bare coral stone in some of the accompanying pictures. These ancient walls that stand more than 2 feet thick help to cool the cottage against the strong Barbados sun. Large windows stand open to catch the trade winds blowing through, cooling temperatures by 2 to 3 C. degrees below those on the west coast. For convenience, the 2 large bedrooms (one king and one twin) both have air conditioning available however, guests will likely find that with a combination of the breezes and ceiling fans, air conditioning will be unnecessary. Red clay tile floors throughout also help to control the interior temperature by reflecting their cooling surfaces back into the air as heat rises into the open rafters and beams that line the roof above. The master ensuite is fitted with a Jacuzzi tub/shower combo, while the second bathroom has a large block-walled shower stall. Your master shower curtain matches not only the gorgeous bedspread but also coordinates with the generous sets of fluffy towels you’ll find in each bathroom. The wide open spaces and modern fittings of the cottage kitchen will rival your kitchen “back home”! The bright green cupboards contain 6 place settings of dishes and glasses yet there’s still lots of space to hide away all those special treats that can only be found in Barbados. The shiny, white countertops where your coffee maker and toaster call out to you to prepare a snack reflect the bright sunshine that’s streaming in through two wide windows. When it comes time for a meal, the glass-topped table in the dining area seats six comfortably and is conveniently located just steps from kitchen activity. Tucked away in the utility room, you will have the convenience of a washer so it’s not necessary to pay extra luggage charges – your bathing suit and your tooth brush are really all you need for your vacation in The Stables at Clifton Hall. Accessible from the living room walk-out is your own patio where you can relax with a couple of cold Banks Beers or a chilled bottle of wine after a hard day of sunning. The back garden is surrounded by tropical trees and flowers while when you feel like stretching your legs, you are welcome to meander the paths of the Great House. More than 300 fruit trees, common to the Caribbean although not likely to be found in your garden “back home” - mango, lime, pomegranate, soursop, passion fruit and many more - call you to explore. Whether this is your first trip to Barbados, or your hundred and first, it is pleasant to be greeted as more than “just another visitor”. Therefore, to get your holiday off on the right foot, we are pleased to assist by going that extra step. We can provide you with the names of car rental companies. We are also happy to provide you with a “starter pack” comprised of those essential items that will enable you to laze around on your first morning, rather than having to rush to the supermarket just so you can have your eye-opening coffee. Whatever you want, you have only to let us know. And whether you are coming for a week, a month, or the winter, you may arrive at The Stables at Clifton Hall as welcome guests but in no time at all, you will be treasured friends we’ll look forward to welcoming back year after year.

Also tucked away within the gardens of the Great House, you will find a beautiful 25’ x 13’ swimming pool that is surrounded by masses of bougainvillea bushes. Whether this is your first trip to Barbados, or your hundred and first, it is pleasant to be greeted as more than “just another visitor”. Therefore, to get your holiday off on the right foot, we are pleased to assist by going that extra step. We would be delighted to provide you with the names of car rental companies to be available upon your arrival. We are also happy to provide you with a “starter pack” comprised of those essential items that will enable you to laze around on your first morning, rather than having to rush to the supermarket just so you can have your eye-opening coffee. If wine is "your thing", our wine suppliers offer exceptional wines at excellent prices. We will be happy to have their wine lists emailed to you then have your choices delivered to the cottage, ready for you to enjoy upon arrival. Whatever your wishes, you have only to let us know. And whether you are coming for a week, a month, or the winter, you may arrive at The Stables at Clifton Hall as welcome guests but in no time at all, you will be treasured friends we’ll look forward to welcoming back year after year.
