The NeighborhoodTo many Scots the East Neuk of Fife is a well known destination for seaside holidays, but for many people in the rest of the UK, the East Neuk is a hidden gem. The East Neuk occupies the north east corner of the Fife peninsula and encompasses a string of beautiful fishing villages which look South across the Firth of Forth and around to the North Sea. We have fascinating architecture, lovely old harbours, beautiful coastal walks, spectacular seas and 100% pure, clean, fresh air. We also have: • lovely countryside • interesting geology • wildlife including seabirds, seals and dolphins • neolithic sites, including standing stones, stone circles and a souterrain • a cliffside chain walk • lots of golf • great places to eat and drink • superb gardens at Kellie Castle - our local National Trust for Scotland property • art, art, art and more art • music The Pittenweem Arts Festival takes place over ten days every August and attracts tens of thousands of visitors. The festival provides a showcase for hundreds of artists exhibiting at around 90 venues in all corners of the village. The whole of the East Neuk is abundant with artists - painters, photographers, illustrators, ceramicists and sculptors. Several times a year you can visit artists, view and buy their work during the East Neuk Open Studios weekends. We recommend it! Getting AroundOn street car parking available outside the property. With its wonderful beaches and colourful fishing villages the East Neuk of Fife offers a fantastic range of facilities to suit every type of tourist. St. Monans today is now mainly a tourist destination with the Fife coastal path through the village, it is very popular with walkers and cyclists alike. The former burgh rests on a hill overlooking the Firth of Forth with views to North Berwick, the Bass Rock and the Isle of May. St Monans contains many historical buildings, including the now defunct windmill (which can be visited) that once powered a salt panning industry, and a 14th-century church with a boat suspended from its ceiling that sits on the rocks above the water on the western side. Approximately ½ mile west of St Monans are the remains of Newark Castle, a 16th-century manor that has since fallen to ruin through cliff erosion and disrepair. The village itself still has many traditional smokehouses including the East Pier smokehouse and Café, where you can sample or buy the local delicacies. There is a village shop, several pubs and restaurants including Craig Miller's award winning restaurant. There are many notable festivals and harbour days that take place throughout the East Neuk, including the Pittenweem Arts Festival, Crail Food Festival and many other too numerous to mention. There is certainly plenty to do in the area. The neighbouring East Neuk villages of Elie, Pittenweim, Anstruther, Cellerdyke and Crail are within walking distance along the Fife Coastal Path or a short drive away. There are many local attractions in these villages most notable the award winning Anstruther fish and chips, the Scottish Fisheries Museum, picturesque Crail harbour, Kellie Castle, The Ship Inn in Elie, Kingsbarns Distillery, The secret Bunker and many, many more. Edinburgh Airport is 35 miles away and Kirkcaldy train station is 20 miles away with regular trains to Edinburgh, St Andrews and beyond. To make the most of the area a car is recommended. That said the local bus service is quite good. The East Neuk of Fife stretches from St Andrews down a coastline peppered with small villages, full of character, which face across The Firth of Forth to East Lothian on the opposite side. A jumble of quaint colourful houses lead down narrow winding streets to line the harbours and rocky shores and their distinctive crow-stepped gables, fore stairs and red pantiles preserve the impression of their time as fishing villages that were totally dedicated to the sea. St Monans itself became one of Scotland's busiest fishing ports for many years but, from the mid 1800's the fleet dwindled and the village had to rely less on fishing and more on its heritage, capitalising on its preserved architecture and waterfront (that is still very much a working harbour today). Stylish and romantic seaside/harbour house with open fire and WiFi on three floors in the heart of East Neuk of Fife fishing village. Ideally located for coastal walks, golf and foodie activities. Well behaved pets welcome. Three nights min stay. Sleeps 4 (2 bedrooms)
