Please see www.northpointplantation.com for more photographs and information. This King William, Va. former 3,000 acre plantation offers one of the most peaceful settings anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic, yet its proximity to important Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields, museums, and other historic sites, wineries, and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting (we have our own dock and duck blind), and guided nature tours make it the perfect accommodation for your trip to the Richmond area. Colonial Williamsburg is less than an hour away. Charlottesville, home of Jefferson's Monticello, the University of Virginia, and Charlottesville RVA wine region, are about 90 minutes' drive. (Saude Creek Winery and New Kent Winery and Vineyards are each about half an hour away.) The 5,000 square foot, 18th c. Georgian plantation home offers a total of six guest bedrooms and sleeps 12. Owner and family Basset Hound occupy the former chauffeur's quarters on the property during guest occupancy. The property is available for weddings, retreats, and special events. Please see www.northpointplantation.com. Now on nearly 15 riverfront acres, this unique home is less than two hours from Washington, D.C., about 35 minutes from Richmond, Va., and less than an hour from Colonial Williamsburg. The 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor, one of the most decisive of the Civil War, was fought just 20 miles from North Point. (All told, the Richmond area has more Civil War and Emancipation sites than anywhere in the country. Blood stains on the North Point's top floor are a testament to its use as a hospital during the Civil War.) The calm Mattaponi River, named for an indigenous Indian tribe, and the 160 century-old box woods that line the drive leading to the house are the signature features of our property. The seven bedroom (one bedroom is currently set up as a sitting room), five bathroom home overlooks a tidal bend in the river and is suffused with light throughout the day. Built in typical, 18th c. plantation style--one room deep, with windows facing front and back, the gently flowing Mattaponi River fills almost every view from the house. Guests may enjoy the river and landscape from the home's large back porch. The home's exceptional beauty and serenity were noted in the book, Old Virginia Houses: The Northern Peninsula. But the plantation's ownership during the 18th and early 19th centuries by the Roane family, one of Virginia's wealthiest and most politically connected, make it historically noteworthy. Established sometime in the 1720's, the property was part of the larger Mount Pleasant plantation patented by Samuel Garlick. When in 1762 ownership of the plantation passed to the Roane family, one of Virginia's wealthiest and most politically connected, the plantation became significant in the annals of Virginia history. John Roane, born on the plantation in 1766, served two stints in the Virginia House of Delegates, from 1788-1790 and in 1792, and then served in the U.S. Congress between 1809-1815, and then again from 1827-1831. John Roane's son, John Jones Roanne, also was born on the plantation and like his father, served in the Congress from 1831-1833. The home's main architectural and structural features, such as original hard pine floors, six fireplaces, brick walls and wood moldings are unchanged through the centuries. The old brick "summer kitchen" and round well remain. A paper mulberry tree and two of three towering pecan trees date from the 18th century. Built in typical 18th c. tidewater colonial style, the house is one-room deep (interior brick walls are 29 inches thick), with windows facing front, back, and side, so that the gently flowing Mattaponi River fills nearly every view from inside the house. Bald Eagles, Ospreys, King Rails and Least Bitterns, staging Soras and Tree Swallows, and large populations of geese and other winter fowl fill the air around North Point with their song. Guests can savor those sounds, along with the beautiful sunrises, magnificent sunsets, and brilliant star-filled skies over the home's large back porch, making their special time at our home unforgettable. Standing on the gentle slope overlooking the Mattaponi, it's easy for one to imagine yesteryear when the plantation bustled with activity and important visitors came from far and wide to discuss politics and the business of planting. The house is divided into four levels, including the English basement, where the kitchen, dining room, half bath/laundry room, and pantry are located. Guest bedrooms are on the third and fourth levels. Master bedroom suite features a king-size four poster bed, gas fireplace, full bath, refrigerator in a closet for your wine or water, and an attached sitting room. One large guest room, with king-size antique brass bed, has a connecting guest room (likely a former nursery) with antique double brass bed. Both rooms share a large full bath and together are perfect for families or friends. An adjacent bedroom, with queen-size bed, has a full bathroom (newly renovated with frameless glass and marble shower) just outside the bedroom. Together, these three bedrooms and two baths, sleeping up to six people, are perfect for a large family or related friends/family. Two additional bedrooms, one with king-size bed, the other with queen-size bed, are located on the fourth level. Guests occupying those bedrooms have use of the full bathroom on the third level, described above. That bathroom is centrally located on the third level. We also have queen-size aerobeds for extra guests. Call for price over 12 guests. Updated, gourmet kitchen with original hearth, is fully stocked with high-end implements.
