The SpaceThis is a great place to relax: play our piano and guitar; read our books; watch cable TV using our Optimum maximum subscription; stream music and videos and take advantage of our networked audio system. Our kitchen is fully equipped, so you can cook great meals and entertain indoors and out in the quiet wooded setting.
There are spaces to be together and apart with beautiful parks all around to bike, hike, boat, snowshoe, sled, ski, study some really interesting history, attend performances and/or classes at several colleges, including Bard and Vassar. The Culinary Institute of America, Omega Institute, FDR's Library, Eleanor's Val-Kill, the Mills and Vanderbilt mansions, and Poet's Walk are minutes away by car.
Though we've now lived in the region for two years, we continue to be amazed by its beauty and cultural richness. Most recently we've started to visit local wineries, of which there are many, and our older son, who founded Knee High Media in Japan, introduced us to the Farm-t-Table movement in our area when he, his wife and Japanese crew visited with us while creating their Hudson Valley issue of Paper Sky. Guest AccessEverything except the garage, the shed and a storage closet on the first floor. (The garage with automatic opener will be available in the future after we move our tools to our Rhinebeck house.) Interaction with GuestsWe live very close by in Rhinebeck, an 8-mile drive, and will be available to help as needed. The NeighborhoodWhen we found and furnished our Staatsburg home, our guiding principal was to make it as comfortable as possible with lots of good reading lights, books, art, music, wi-fi, cable and A/C. It is a light, airy 3-level house with a wonderful deck that feels like a treehouse. It is located in the middle of the mid-Hudson Valley close to Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Woodstock and the Catskills. There are many wonderful parks and places nearby like FDR's home and presidential library and Valkill (Eleanor's cottage), Vanderbilt and Mills Mansions, Bard, Vassar and Marist Colleges, Kaatsbaan Int'l Dance Center, the Fisher Center for Performing Arts, and the restaurants and cooking classes at the Culinary Institute of America. Storm King and DIA are an hour away in Beacon and the towns of Woodstock and Hudson are both about a half-hour drive. Getting AroundIt's about two hours by train from NY City to either the Amtrak station in Rhinecliff, 16 minutes, 7.2 miles away from our house, or the Amtrak and MetroNorth station in Poughkeepsie, 22 minutes, 13 miles from our house. The center of Rhinebeck Village is 6.3 miles, 11 minutes away, and Red Hook is only 16 minutes, 10.6 miles away. We are 12 minutes, 7.5 miles from Hyde Park, 11 minutes, 5.2 miles form the Omega Institute, 19 minutes, 12.8 miles from Bard College and 25 minutes, 14.3 miles from Vassar College. Kingston is 26 minutes, 17 miles away. Please note that these are real, not virtual driving times, i.e., there really isn't any traffic you need worry about -- "'O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy" -- for you're staying in the country! Other Things to NoteA house manual is available to help you understand the features of the house and to integrate your electronic tools.
