The NeighborhoodOne hour and a half from Manhattan (+-60 miles), Nissequogue is an incorporated village bound on three sides by water: the Nissequogue River, Smithtown Bay/ L.I. Sound, and Stony Brook Harbor. Local beaches (Long, Short, and Schubert) have lifeguards, playgrounds, volleyball, and concession stands & picnic facilities. Beyond the beach, you can canoe the Nissequogue River, or go to Stony Brook for shopping & restaurants, the Grist Mill, a Discovery Wetlands cruise, the Staller center, the Long Island Museum, and more. (URL HIDDEN) (URL HIDDEN) (URL HIDDEN) (URL HIDDEN) Really local: our road has a mixture of summer and full time residents. Driftwood Lane is “old-school” in that the most of the homes are renovated cottages as compared to the nearby newer homes. The private beach (a two minute walk to the Sound) is a great place to unplug and/ or relax with friends. There is always the “walk around the point” excursion, which winds back through the bird sanctuary. Or hike to the bluffs, a +- one mile trip. Getting AroundTo get here by car, use 495 or Northern State Pkwy, and your GPS device; be sure to obey the posted speed limits. Nissequogue is accessible by the LIRR on the Port Jefferson line (Smithtown or St. James stations) but a car is a necessity, as the nearest grocery store is 7-8 miles away. The nearest towns for groceries, etc. are Smithtown and Saint James. Stock up on essentials, or you might find yourself eating food at the marina (1/2 mile away) because you will not want to leave the beach! There are plenty of restaurants in Stony Brook (20 minutes) ride; and Port Jefferson (30 minutes.) Other Things to NoteThere is no cleaning fee, however upon departure, the house has to be left in the same condition as arrival. If the house is not neat, you will be charged a $125 cleaning fee from your security deposit. We will inspect property promptly upon your departure. Cleaning do's and don'ts will be provided.

The SpaceAn older house on the outside; but renovated and comfortable within. The deck overlooks a bird-lovers garden; the location so near the Sound invites many migratory birds. The hosts call this Home. Guest AccessGuests have access to the first two floors. This includes the 3 bedrooms on the second floor, back deck and updated kitchen. Third floor available upon special arrangement. Interaction with GuestsAccess to the house is private and the amount of interaction we have with you is entirely up to you. We will be available by phone and email whenever you need to assistance with your stay, or to provide excellent recommendations on where to go for a good glass of wine and a meal. The NeighborhoodA 15-20 minute walk along residential sidewalks: to Stony Brook University, to quaint Stony Brook Village shoppes, beach, fishing marina, bird sanctuary, and Avalon Park and Preserve with miles of splendid trails leading from the GristMill. Getting AroundThe LIRR station to NYC (and to Port Jefferson and Ferries) is a 20 minute walk; there is a car rental near the RR station at the gas station, the SBU campus has bus links to the local bus transit, the L I North Shore scenic bike route is at the head of our lane. Other Things to NoteBecause we have lots of shade trees, we prefer to allow maximum natural light in the public spaces. Hence, we have shades only for thermal purposes in the most exposed 1st floor windows, but full glazing untrammeled by fabrics. Because there has been previous comment, we realize the neighborhood is new and unknown to our guests; Bedrooms and bathrooms are now doubly curtained.

The SpaceIn choosing a place to live, this house stood out because of the uniqueness of the peaceful tranquility it provides -- a true rarity in the monotonic suburbia that defines much of Long Island. The guest room, with two windows which face west, allows the perfect view of the sunset through the trees of the forest that is our private backyard. In the morning, outside the window where you will eat breakfast, chickens roam freely in the backyard (property of an unknown neighbor, but we don't mind them). As senior-year Stony Brook students, we know from experience that this is truly one of the best living experiences available -- one we didn't want to keep just to ourselves. And so we are so thrilled to be sharing it, and meeting such incredible and amazing people along the way, thanks to AirBnB. Guest AccessIn addition to the bedroom, guests may use our full kitchen and dining area (breakfast staples such as eggs, milk, cereal, bread, and, of course, coffee, are provided -- however guests are kindly asked to prepare for, and clean up after, themselves). We also have a very welcoming living room guests may use, complete with a 55" 4K Ultra-HD TV featuring 4K content from Netlix & YouTube. Console gamers will find themselves right at home with Daniel's XBox One. In the basement we have washer & dryer which guests may use if need be (just let us know)! The driveway has ample room for parking (please DO NOT park on the street -- it's actually illegal on our block!) Our home features one (generally very clean) bathroom. If staying on a strict schedule, be sure to let us know what time(s) you expect to need it in the morning (or evening) to get ready, so we can avoid using it in those times. If there's anything else we didn't cover, please don't hesitate to ask! Interaction with GuestsBoth Daniel and Brooklynn are full-time SBU students. Meaning we're always nearby, but never lingering. Surely we will interact at one point or another aside from check-in, but most of our time is spent either in class or studying. Feel free to contact either of us if you need anything! The NeighborhoodIn addition to being so close to the Stony Brook University campus, we are also lucky enough to also be walking distance (you can drive, too!) to the Old Stony Brook Village (an historic collection of old shops, galleries, restaurants & more); Avalon Park (a beautiful, expansive, privately-maintained public nature preserve); The Long Island Museum; The Stony Brook Beach & Yacht Club; as well as the local favorite bar, The Bench, and 24-hour conveniences of Dunkin Donuts and 7-11. Less than a 5-minute drive to the grocery store, pharmacy, etc., and less than 10-minutes from the Smith Haven Mall, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and pretty much any other store you could be looking for. Getting AroundIf you are here for visiting Stony Brook University (whether the main University campus, the hospital, the R&D park), the short (less than half-mile) walk from our home to the campus' LIRR station beats the huge hassle of parking on campus, and will get you on the SBU Transit, campus bus system, which has lines that stop every possible campus location. Many local attractions and amenities can be found within walking distance, but for those that can't and don't have a car there is Suffolk Transit buses (low reliability), or taxis (numbers provided upon request). However, both hosts Daniel and Brooklynn have their own vehicles and, if they are around and available, would be more than happy to help you out locally in a pinch. Other Things to NoteOur most common guest type is people coming in for job/residency interviews. If it goes well and a life in Stony Brook is in your future, keep in touch! We may need a more permanent housemate come 2017. Our house is surrounded by nature. It's incredible and beautiful and something we really enjoy. That said, sometimes nature doesn't stop at the walls. Infrequently, a couple black ants make their way through onto the floor. This was more a problem when we moved in, and we've since gotten rid of 99% of them. However, you might see one or two (on the opposite side of the house from the room you're renting). They're harmless, but if you do run across them, don't freak out -- just let us know and we'll take care of it. Any other insect only gets in if you leave the door open too long. Also, our home is the downstairs unit of a 2-family house. Upstairs live two SBU PhD students who are rarely ever home. Sometimes they get home at night and we hear them walking, but nothing more. If it bothers you in the night, just send us hosts a text and we will forward it on (they are very accommodating).
