The NeighborhoodIn Suurbraak, on the other side of the river, is the quaint self-catering cottage, “Bibi’s Joy”, belonging to Peter and Bibi Present. Its appeal lies in its solitude and the fact that the mountain is its back-yard. This set-up is ideal for the avid outdoors-person, as mountain-biking, hiking, cross-country running, cycling, and even swimming and canoeing (depending of the water level of the river) can be practiced with ease. The charming cottage has a lovely garden with many indigenous plant species and ancient oak trees. This is a haven for birders, as even the odd kingfisher was spotted on the property. Hoopoe’s, the Cape Robin, a variety of sugar birds, Fiscal Shrike, Forktailed Drongo’s etc., are found here. Goats, horses and cattle on the adjacent plots add character and complement the country feel. One of the reasons the main gate must be kept closed at all times. The SpaceThe unique combination of stylish architect designed off-the-grid house with the wildness of the setting, mountain, wetland river and pool. Guest AccessErf 26 Oorkant die Rivier is a tucked away rural retreat but the village of Suurbraak, an old mission station established in 1812, is well worth exploring. 15km from the tourist hub of Swellendam it is close to wine farms, historic buildings, potteries, galleries and nature reserves. Barrydale, also 15 km away is filled with interesting gift shops and delightful restaurants and places to stop for tea. Bring your mountain bikes as The Grootvadersbosch right next door offers some awesome mountain bike trails. See: (URL HIDDEN) Interaction with GuestsWe would interact by phone and email and as often as required. The NeighborhoodThe calm, the peacefulness. We love the neighborliness, the character of Suurbraak, the brass-band at Christmas time, the young men riding bareback through the village. The family life on the stoeps of the houses along the main road. The convivial Paradise Organic cafe with its excellent food. Communal swimming at the big swimming holes close to the village. The ability to retreat, yet be close to all the goings on of tourist Overberg. Getting AroundThere are a few bus companies that travel along the Garden Route, stopping off in Suurbraak if required. Walking or cycling around Suurbraak itself is all that is needed. Other Things to NoteThe road after the river crossing can feel very uneven. It is safe though for even those in small cars as long as you drive slowly. Our swimming pond is not fenced so if you have small children you will need to be watchful. Also the path over the donga at the end of the river is fine for adults, and children will love it, but do keep an eye on them as they may slip on the crossing.

Guest AccessWe are central to historic Swellendam, beautiful views of the Langeberg and the Tradouw pass where we go to swim in mountain pools. On the other side is Barrydale and the Klein Karoo. Closer there is the Bontebok National Park, Grootvadersbosch where some of the largest Redwoods grow outside of California. Whale watching at Witsand where the Breede river meets the Indian ocean. Agulhas is the Southernmost point of Africa where two oceans meet. (A little far but can be done). Interaction with GuestsWe love meeting new people and are always available to help and advise. The first drink on arrival is free so we can get to know each other. If you need something the chances are we can help. From food to a cooler box for the day, ice or whatever. The SpaceErnadoon se Plek has the most breathtaking view of the Langeberg Mountains. The semi-detached house has a large lounge/dining room with a 3/4 day bed, a private bedroom, fully kitted kitchen, bathroom and toilet. The outside porch is the perfect place, where you can pour that sundowner and watch the Blue Cranes and open beaked storks flyover whilst the Cape Robin, Mousebirds and various Sunbirds forage the indigenous flowers and insects that are in the garden. Guest AccessErnadoon se Plek is part of Hamara, our home in Suubraak. It borders the main road, opposite the Anglican Church (1872), next to the local Xairu general dealer, and the Buffuljags river. If we are not there to welcome you, our dear friends, Greg and Louis at Paradise Organic will be able to escort you to your destination and help you get settled in. Interaction with GuestsIf we are at home, we share our garden with you. We like to keep to ourselves, however we have been known to make sumptuous dinners for friends staying over. Since the kids have flown the nest, it's wonderful to make food for lots of people from time to time. The NeighborhoodThis beautifully situated village, sheltered by giant oaks, was formerly known as Zuurbraak and lies at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, on the southern end of the Tradouw Pass. The mountains are rich in fynbos and bird life and cattle paths act as mountain trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and bird-watchers alike. The isolation of Suurbraak is one of its charms but this sheer lack of opportunity has forced the youth to seek employment elsewhere and has limited the financial resources of the people, both young and old. Many still cook on wood stoves and the people live close to the land using farming methods that belong to the past. The smaller farms are still ploughed using horse drawn ploughs. Agricultural work is often done manually with most households owning at least one cow and a few donkeys or horses. Donkey and horse-drawn carts are often seen in the streets. Mat making, hide curing and blacksmithing have all sadly died out, as has candle and soap making. Furniture making, however, and in particular chairs and the traditional methods of bodging, has remained. Garden furniture and crafts are also fashioned from alien vegetation. Guided village and mountain walking tours are offered, while horse riding and cart rides remind the visitor that time has stood still at Suurbraak. There are basic braai facilities alongside the river with spectacular pools. Getting AroundThere is only one bus service in Suurbraak- Wessels. The bus goes to Swellendam on Saturdays in the morning and returns at 1pm. Once you have settled, there are wonderful walks on the riverside and in the mountains above Suurbraak. Other Things to NoteWe have the worst Wi-fi Connection- that's why we love it here... no WORK!!! However from time to time there is a reasonable connection. The cost is prohibitive. ZAR100 for 1GB.. so if you want,we can arrange.
