The SpaceThis classic Maine summer home is located steps away from a sandy beach in a quiet cove, perfect for swimming and for young children. Grassy meadows surround the house, which has views of the ocean on three sides. The kitchen/dining/living area is comfortable and light. A wood stove can warm the house on cool evenings and in colder months. In the summer, doors open to a wrap-around porch with built in benches for dining outside. The first-floor corner bedroom has a double bed and views of the ocean on two sides. Another bedroom has a separate entrance onto the porch and is separated from the main house by the entryway. Upstairs two bedrooms sleep two each. The second floor front bedroom offers views of the ocean and surrounding island. Twenty-five acres of meadow, woods, a small pond, and pink granite shorefront invite leisurely afternoon strolls. Guest AccessThe wood fired cook / heat stove is fun to use. If you prefer the gas range that is available too. Wood will be in the entry hall, if you run out there is more in the sheep barn at the rear of the meadow. The NeighborhoodA small grocery store is just a five-minute’s walk away. Free wireless service is available at the town office, just fifteen-minute’s away by foot, or five minutes by car. [Please be sure to read the "Other Things to Note" section below.] The island features rocky and sandy beaches, spectacular hikes, fishing, and swimming in a local quarry. During summer months the town offers frequent “Town Breakfasts,” concerts, and other community events. Other Things to NoteThe general store on island is pretty well stocked but small and pricey with short hours. You can buy lobster and usually selfish as well at the wharf but that is about it. It is a dry island so there is no alcohol for sale anywhere. We generally stop at the Hannafords in Ellsworth then perhaps also at the gourmet Sawyers market in Southwest Harbor on MDI. There is alcohol in Hannafords and wine at Sawyers. So leave plenty of time for this. There is debate about how early you should arrive to get in line for the ferry. 1 hour? 20 min? If you arrive too late, you may not be able to take your car on. Some prefer to pay a little extra and call ahead for a reservation. This is a good idea if you are shooting for the last boat. It is soo nice up there, have a wonderful time!

Swan's Island is reached by a 17-car ferry which leaves regularly from Bass Harbor. West Lee Cottage, 18 Steamboat Hill, sits on Burnt Coat Harbor, one of the finest harbors on the coast, and resting point for the major yacht clubs. It has three bedrooms (the third is a "Studio" off the kitchen --- once a country store then an art studio --- which has three queen beds, a Franklin Stove, and workspace for art projects ). The house has wrap-around decks with views of the Harbor and is 100 yards from Kent's Wharf where lobsters can be purchased at a very reasonable price. The house is filled art, books, movies (1000 VHS, 300 DVDs) CDs, coffee and espresso makers, a bicycle, two kayaks, two TVs, plenty of deck furniture, a fire pit, free wifi, and more. There is a screen porch off the kitchen and a large pantry. It is a charming house built in 1898 with sliding glass doors to the decks, and with a rustic/California feel, a little "shabby sheek." The Swan's Island Community is very welcoming and there are weekly activities --- Sunday breakfasts at the IOOF Hall, dances, theater, concerts, annual art crawl with open studios, and more. At the top of Steamboat Hill, a two minute walk from the House, is the Swan's Island Tea Room--- a place for amazing delights, free wifi and conversation. There are four churches on the Island, two fire stations, a consolidated school, a small grocery store, a health clinic, a public park, white sand beaches, a fresh water granite quarry for warmer swimming, a beautiful lighthouse (Hockomock Head Light), trips to neighboring Isle au Haut and Stonington for restaurants and shopping, an annual Fourth of July Pig Roast with fireworks, and numerous marked hiking trails.

Make Robin House part of your summer & fall from now on! The private wooded setting right on the shoreline is perfect for watching the tide roll in and out. Enjoy sunrise and sunset by winding through a wooded trail to the BIG rock fondly named Allagash! 4 bedroom plus a double and single in a loft, multilevel home includes a master bedroom (queen) & full bath on the first floor, 3 bedrooms (including a 4 bed bunk room!) on the 2nd floor and a loft that will sleep 3! Guest room 1: Double. Guest room 2: 2 twins, double futon & roll-a-away twin. Guest room 3: 3 single & 1 double in bunk bed format. There is also a sleeping loft with 1 twin & double! There is a full bath upstairs too. Fireplace, fully furnished kitchen with microwave and utensils, full washer and dryer, VCR, DVR, DirectTV in den, wireless internet, multilevel decks, gas grill and outdoor seating add to your summer vacation experience. Enjoy the ever changing sea with 10'+ tides. Swim in the ocean, relax at Fine Sand Beach or swim at the rock quarry - now swimming hole. Buy lobster from the local market or dig clams and mussels! Enjoy the surprises that Swans Island has to offer and be enchanted from the beginning on the Henry Lee Ferry that you take from Bass Harbor to get to Swan's Island! Your kids will beg you to come back each year where you can eat lobster while watching the ebb and flow. The views from the house and deck make you wake up every morning and think you are in paradise! The low tides are just as pretty as the high tides! Seeing the sea gulls swoop down, pick up a clam or mussel, then fly high over the big boulders that line the shoreline and drop them to crack them open and then eat them is mesmerizing! We like to follow one bird and see where they pick their clam and then guess which boulder they will fly to, drop and eat! We chose this property over others due to the serene location and ocean views. Make sure you check out Fine Sand Beach, the Quarry swimming hole and TIMS take out - Friday night is pizza night, but order early! Goose Pond is about a mile walk…some may want to crest the ridge behind it for the view of the Atlantic and walk down to the ocean beach. Make the short drive to Hockamock Head Lighthouse. The views are amazing and you will want to see it at low tide and high tide to experience the crashing waves. There are several trails around the lighthouse that take you to 2 different beaches. Want to dig clams or muscles? Wait for low tide and look for the small holes in the sand! Grab a shovel and start digging!! The location of this home with Back Cove on one side and a quiet lagoon on the other side made this the perfect choice for us. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, want to stop, listen and not hear anything, then this is the place for you. Read a book on the deck or borrow one of the books on the book case. Play board games in the evening, hike wooded trails, dig clams, watch the Lobstermen bring in their catch or sleep the day away on the deck...it's all here. Yet, you are a 30 minute ferry ride from Bass Harbor and Mt. Desert Island. It's not home away from home, it's 'relax away from home'! June 2016 bookings now available and booking for 2017! Charter a motor launch or sail boat. Go whale watching. Explore nearby uninhabited islands. Go clamming on deserted beaches. We hope to offer a sail boat and motor boat with the property rental, soon. In the meantime local lobstermen sometimes offer rides on their lobster boats with trips to nearby Stonington, and mail boat rides to Frenchboro, on which you might see some seals, some eagles, other sea birds and rarely a whale. All the house water is from our well, tastes wonderful, is filtered and treated with UV light to kill any germs that might be in the well. State licensed lab tests done in June 2013 assured the potability of the well water, without filtration and UV treatment. Mattresses are modern, firm, and very comfortable.

Have a swim and picnic at Fine Sand beach. Explore the rocky back shore west of the lighthouse. Want fresh, as in straight from the ocean bottom fresh lobster, you can do that! You have to take a ferry to get here, but it is well worth the effort! For some historical perspective, Swan's Island was first charted in 1606 by Samuel de Champlain's expedition, and at the time was used by local Indians as a seasonal hunting ground. Colonel James Swan of Fife, Scotland purchased the island in 1786, but in 1791, David Smith, an American Revolutionary War veteran, became the first settler of European extraction on the island. The population grew slowly to more than 1,000 by 1900. Fish processing was the dominant industry into the 1930s but, with the advent of refrigeration, fresh fish replaced the dried and canned products produced in the area making the area's existing processing businesses unprofitable. The island's ferry service, which ceased operations at the beginning of the second world war, was reinstated when the state ferry began service in 1960, helping to make Swan's Island a popular summer tourism destination. The ferry also is used to carry the mail to the island.

Also, a take-out that is open all week, zumba and yoga classes, pancake breakfasts. Swan's Island is 6 miles away from Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park.
