The house has all the modern conveniences including wireless internet and direct TV so you can stay connected, but the house has maintained its unique historical charm to include its wide hickory planked floors, log cabin rooms with stone fireplaces, and hand crafted wood work throughout the home. Paleo-Indians, the royal governor Alexander Spottswood and the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, as well as Civil War Generals Stonewall Jackson and J. E. B. Stuart along with their men have all been visitors to Madison County. Trails and early roads led through the Piedmont area of Madison and up into the Blue Ridge Mountains enabling 18th and 19th century travelers to enter the Shenandoah Valley. Early settlers included German, English and Scots/Irish families in the 18th century. Descendants of these families still live in Madison. President Herbert Hoover bought land in the mountain area of Madison and built his summer camp there. His official visit to the town of Madison in August 1929 is commemorated annually. The county has retained its rich agricultural tradition and has maintained the architectural heritage of 18th and 19th century buildings and homes. Museums offer a view to the past for history buffs of all ages and a walking tour of the town of Madison enables visitors to appreciate its beauty. Travel through the county will bring the visitor into the unique blend of country life today amidst the historical evidence of years gone by. The wood paneling, extensive stone work and open floor plan, create the ambiance of a wonderful mountain lodge retreat. The expansive Great Room has a massive heart-of-oak mantle over the large fieldstone fireplace. The Kitchen opens to the Great Room with an 8-foot dining table. The large Bedroom has two raised twin beds, a table, rocker and woodstove. The beds are very high off the ground and you will need to use the stepping stool to get into and out of the beds. Sleeping for two more people is found in the Great Room queen sofabed. Amenities: * Great Room – sofabed, 5 sturdy oak rocking chairs, large desk and dining table that seats 8, fireplace, Jotul woodstove. * Kitchen – electric range and oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, separate wet-bar sink, utensils, dishes, pots and pans. * Full bathroom * Laundry room with washer/dryer * Large BR – two raised twin beds with drawers underneath (you'll need to use the stepping stools to get into and out of the beds), rocker, table for 4, woodstove * Large back patio overlooking meadow and pond * Central heat and air conditioning (heat pump) with woodstove and propane wall-mounted heater for supplemental heat. * Outside there is a large patio overlooking the meadow and the pond with a charcoal BBQ. * We have a special arrangement with Graves Mountain lodge for our guests to use their pool for a small daily fee per person. What to Bring: • If you want to use the BBQ, bring your own charcoal & lighter fluid • We will provide wood for the fireplace and campfire ring, but you may want to bring lighter fluid and newspaper. We ask that you contribute $5 towards firewood for each fire you make. • Groceries - there is a general store in Syria that carries some basics but no fresh produce. The closest “real” grocery store is in Madison, which is 25 minutes away. You might want to bring the food you’ll need with you. • Bug spray • Flashlight Guest AccessYou will be given the combination to the lockbox that contains the key after you make your reservation. Interaction with GuestsShortly after your arrival, we will greet you at the cabin to make sure everything is okay. We will be available by phone to answer any questions you may have during your stay. The NeighborhoodThe Shenandoah National Park has a wealth of hiking, swimming and fishing -- all within walking distance. There is dining, swimming and horseback riding in Syria, VA at Graves Mountain Lodge. Please let me know if you want to use the pool at the Lodge as we have a special arrangement there for our guests. There are also many local wineries and dining options nearby. The region is full of Civil War historical sites and battlefields, and the homes of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson are easy day trips. We have a notebook in the cabin of local attractions. Also, see our website for more information at OldRagCabins. Getting AroundYou may park two cars in the driveway at the cabin. There is no other parking on the road nearby. The free parking at the Park trailheads fills up very quickly on the weekends, but there is paid parking near the White Oak Canyon Trailhead. Other Things to Note• The cabins are located in the heart of the mountains, and there is a lot of wildlife. Along with the pleasure of seeing deer, wild turkey, black bear, butterflies, rabbits, songbirds and butterflies comes the unpleasant occasional snake. You’ll need to be careful when walking outside as there are poisonous snakes in the area. • Although we do our best to keep mice out of the house, occasionally one will get inside. If you have lights near the windows at night, bugs can get through the screens. • Well-behaved dogs are allowed with prior approval. Please tell me about your pet in your inquiry message. • There is no smoking For more information, see our website OldRagCabins

The Space3 story mountain cabin on 44 private, peaceful acres: Ground floor entrance First floor living room (double-size sofa bed), kitchen-dining (seats 6), bedroom (queen bed), bath Second floor bedroom (king or single bed) Guest AccessWhole house Interaction with GuestsSelf-access only (lock box) Please note there is NO PHONE. And the mountains block cell phone reception. For most carriers, you can pick up cell phone reception about 10 minutes drive south, on the way to the little town of Madison. There is no internet because Verizon does not supply cable to this rural area, and the only other option is internet by satellite. Because there are so few suppliers for this location, the cost is approximately two to three times the cost of internet in urbanized areas. So enjoy going entirely offline for a time. The NeighborhoodThe folks down the road, in the grey house next door, sometimes do target practice in their back yard; but otherwise the place is very quiet except for the occasional plane, high overhead, or humming bird on the deck. We have seen bears (not near the house, but back) in the woods. So read up on what to do if you encounter a bear while hiking. You may see them before they see you but they'll smell you before you see them; just remain calm, do not run, and do not approach. You may want to read this: (URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundI believe the best driving route from DC is through Warrenton, Washington Va, and Sperryville, because you're in the scenic areas much more quickly, and the traffic is typically much lighter. (The only drawback is that you also part with cell phone reception that much sooner). People can come by train (Culpeper station: served by Amtrak's Cardinal, Crescent, and Northeast Regional routes), and biking from there is possible.* A cab from Culpeper costs more than $65 one way, so if not biking it, at least one car is advisable. Enterprise Rentacar is not far from the Amtrak station. * Amtrak requires reservations for bikes, and only offers 6 spaces on the Crescent Line, with a $20 bike fee. (URL HIDDEN) Other Things to NoteSome front-wheel drive cars cannot climb the steep driveway, so be prepared to park at the roadside. Just do not block the entrance -- it's the school bus turn-around -- and please be sure to shut the two gates you'll need to pass through. If the cows are in the meadow, be patient and gentle; they'll move.

Located just minutes from Old Rag Mountain, Whippoorwill Manor Farm is a destination that affords the rare experience to rent your own farm for a week or a weekend. Many people have the desire to own a second house in the country to enjoy a secluded atmosphere with family and friends, and Whippoorwill Manor Farm provides this unique prospect without all the burdens and costs of ownership (we now enjoy hosting a number of regulars as a result). The 110 acres with its miles of trails along with exploring the many restored barns provides the occasion to enjoy a real connection back to the land and history of our country. The Hop field next to the home adds an additional ambience to the grounds during the growing season. The historic but completely modernized home provides a year round setting to enjoy. The original part of the house (log cabin) dates back to the 1700's and is the second oldest structure in Madison County. During the Civil War, the Farm was used as a camp by the Confederacy on several instances during the campaigns of 1862 and 1863. The house was completely restored in 2005 adding a new addition that houses a large modern kitchen, and 3 full baths (over 3,800 sq. ft). The house has all the modern conveniences to stay connected including, direct TV and wireless internet (best available in Madison County but it is not city speed and is not unlimited so we request you download videos prior to visit and not conduct gaming during stay). The home has maintained its unique historical charm to include its wide hickory planked floors, log cabin rooms with stone fireplaces, and hand crafted wood work throughout the home. One of Washington's top interior decorators designed the home specifically with the idea of group/family use. The house even offers a 'pub' room that's great to enjoy a drink while playing darts or cards after a hard day of outdoor activities such as: climbing Old Rag MT (the most spectacular hike in VA) or hiking White Oak Canyon to see its impressive upper and lower waterfalls, both parking lots are approximately 7 miles from the house both located in Shenandoah National Park. Whippoorwill Manor Farm is just minutes from Graves Mountain Lodge and both Prince Michel, Sharp Rock and DuCard Vineyards. It is a wonderful place for family vacations and reunions as well as a quiet retreat for business strategy development and/or executive team building events. An ideal setting for cooking out or hosting an outdoor/catered event. The grounds surrounding the house include the new Hops field with its vines growing on 12' trestles. Virginia was actually the Hops growing capital during the early colonial period of the country. The property is 15-20 minutes from the historic towns of Culpepper, Madison and Sperryville, ideal for shopping and quality restaurants. Additionally, it serves as a perfect home vacation site to explore the many historic landmarks of the Shenandoah Valley and its vast natural beauty. Our objective is to treat our guests the same as we would our extended family/friends that come and visit the farm. Therefore, our goal is to allow you to walk in and find the important essentials to get you started. The farm provides the following: linens, towels, blankets, essential paper products, cleaning supplies, some laundry detergent, coffee, spices and condiments (no guaranteed stock), charcoal, lighter fluid and wood for fire place (some local cabins charge $40.00 just for the firewood). There is also a 25 pound a day ice maker. To assist in keeping the cleaning modest, you will need to the sheets on the bed. Covers and blankets are on the beds with its sheets folded at the base. Finally, our Caretakers (Bill and Delores) live nearby and are available to personally address any concerns or questions you may have. Come enjoy this truly unique and beautiful property for a peaceful and fun vacation or come with a group of friends for a long weekend to hike, bike, and enjoy each other with a number of local attractions and activities. On the property, there are a number of activities to enjoy such as volleyball and horseshoes along with a great skeet shooting area, a mechanical thrower is available that guests may use (guests responsible for clean up). In the evenings, the fire pit is a wonderful place to tell stories and share experiences year round. In the large field above the house fireworks are permitted as well (guests responsible for clean up). There are very few opportunities to rent a place with so much charm with its old barns and well groomed fields all in a private setting which makes it both ideal and easy to host a week or weekend getaway with family and/or friends. The farm has an outdoor sauna (dry) in the back yard and can be enjoyed year round. The house has a full back up generator in the event power is lost so your stay will not be disrupted if a major storm strikes. The owners have great connections with local Civil War Historians, musicians and even a terrific private chef that can be engaged to visit the farm during your stay. Chef Aubree can work with you on a custom menu or has fixed course menus that she can prepare for your group. She can also augment your group as direct support by the hour. Many have had her prepare the dinner and next day's breakfast and lunch The farm can be enjoyed year round. The owners really like being at the farm during the winter months as the Mid Atlantic usually has fairly mild winters so during the day it's warm enough to be outside and hike without the bugs and thorn bushes scratching you and you come back at night and enjoy huddling around the fireplaces at night. During the winter months, the owners will provide a full refund if one of those rare snow storms hit the area and prevent safe travel. For cycling enthusiasts from other parts of the country, the mountain scenery coupled with the quiet, safe, country roads are a national treasure to be experienced. The very popular Tour de Madison Bike Ride (held in mid-May every year), and the ride enjoys national statere. The Tour is not a race, but rather designed as a wonderful way to see the great scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They have routes for the entire family; you can choose between 16, 40, and 62 miles along country roads. If you can't make the actual weekend, the owner will provide you with the specific routes of the Tour so can enjoy them during your stay. Your group could even do a different 'century' every day for a week and beyond the initial few miles leaving/returning to the house; you will not have to cover the same ground twice! The owners even several mountain and road bikes available for your use, both male and female bikes. Hosting "Events" are done by exception and involve additional fees and usually require renting of port a john and tent depending on the size of the group. For weddings it requires a "3 Day" minimum rental as tent and port a John rentals won't pick up until Monday. Additionally, special event insurance must be purchased. Chestnut Oak Farm is a luxurious western-style lodge retreat on a 90 acre horse farm near the base of Old Rag Mountain. The lodge was constructed in 2009 using granite blocks from the farm and huge Virginia pine logs in a western style of rustic elegance. The lodge is surrounded by decks and porches to take in the magnificent view over Hidden Valley, Old Rag Mountain, the farm's twin ponds, and the horses grazing in the fields. The lodge is equipped with a Chef's Kitchen, huge dining room (we have seated sixteen), double-sided fireplace, baby grand piano, screened porch, and covered porch. The main lodge house has three Master Bedrooms, and two other large bedrooms with a shared bath. Downstairs is a walkout game room with foosball, ping pong, bar, and a fire pit/movie pit with 52' screen TV. The outdoor 8 person hot tub is steps away, overlooking the pond. 150 feet down the hill below the pond is the 'Guest' Treehouse. The treehouse is a cedar sided two level cabin-style house which sleeps six, with full bath and kitchen--and an optional fire pole exit for the adventurous. This treetop aerie has to be seen to be believed! The farm has a small herd of horses, two alpacas (Mike and Ike), and a growing assortment of other farm animals including peacocks. We have hiking trails on the property. A fantastic network of both gravel and paved roads fans out from the farm for incredible short and long distanced cycling routes. Or you can leave the farm to hike the incredible local trails or fish the local streams, or visit some of the local wineries or organic farms. We are 35 miles from Charlottsville, and 82 miles from Washington DC. Caretakers live onsite and can help out with questions, firewood, directions, and even with provisioning if desired. They are happy to arrange spectacular custom-guided trail rides from a local stable in the surrounding mountains--even overnight camping trips. Keywords: Farm, Horsefarm, Estate

The SpaceOur house is located adjacent to Shenandoah National Park in the hollow of Double Top Mountain. Built in 1901, and originally functioning as a home for a large family, the house was lovingly restored and modernized in 2010. Repurposing some of the unsalvageable original American Chestnut floors led to custom handmade kitchen and bathroom cabinets. There are three bedrooms, two upstairs with a full bath, and one downstairs with a full bath including a claw foot tub. The kitchen, living area, and dining table for six share an open plan space. The house has new windows and a new hvac system, as well as a gas burning wood stove in the living area for cozy relaxation on winter nights. Updated with modern amenities the home maintains the original turn of the century Virginia farm house feel. There is a large front porch, good for mountain views or just sittin' ! The property is about 5.5 acres with a large yard and a new paddock for horses. The paddock consists of two areas totaling approximately one acre. There is room for horse trailer parking as well. The outdoor spaces are perfect for stargazing or enjoying clear mountain air. Fink's Hollow Lane turns into trails that lead up to Big Meadows on Skyline Drive, and is a main trail for horse riding from Graves Mountain Lodge and Syria Virginia.
