The SpaceLarge downstairs with stunning views onto organic gardens, Olympic mountain skyline, and Hood Canal. Close to Olympic National Park, Hood Canal, trails & more! We invite you to come, kick back and relax in the large downstairs area of our modern homestead. Lots of windows to take in views of the surrounding gardens, towering native trees, and the exquisite beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Doors straight off your room lead to a covered outdoor seating area, a nice place to escape the rain, enjoy the views and observe the wildlife drawn in by the permaculture gardens. Biodiversity abounds here. Inside or out, relaxation and exploration are yours to be had in this unique place. Our little farm on the hill is a work in progress. We love it here, and we think you will too. Inside, your spacious three hundred square foot downstairs studio holds a queen size bed and a big, comfy couch as two sleeping/lounging options for up to 3 people. Wifi, DVDs, Xbox, board games, regional books and more. Attached laundry through which you access your newly renovated, and sparkling clean bathroom, shared with one other person. Backpackers, need to do some laundry? Plus, plenty of space for food storage in the spare refrigerator in the laundry room. Outside, relax or explore our unique Pacific Northwest farm in the making. Gardens, trails, chickens, mushroom farming, permaculture projects, and more. Check out the edible and medicinal plants that scatter the landscape along with the vast variety of native plants that surround us. A trail system in the works around our timbered land connects to miles and miles of walking trails on 'the back forty'. We bought the place five years ago and have slowly been making it our own. Join us, or cook up your own hot breakfast in the shared upstairs kitchen. Farm fresh eggs and produce (when available), homemade jams & jellies, huckleberry flapjacks, mushrooms, herbs or whatever else inspires the menu that day. Coming to stay during the Fall or Winter seasons? We want our guests to be comfortable and enjoy their privacy, however, during the colder months (October-March) the wood burning fireplace is the main source of heat for the house and is located in your downstairs room. The fire will likely be going when you get here. You are welcome to keep it going for the lovely cozy heat it provides (it's very easy). Or if it goes out, that's okay too! The propane furnace will kick in, we just might all be wearing sweaters to help stay warm. ;) We will be happy to help in whatever way makes you most comfortable. People love to come here and relax and we value your privacy. Guest AccessAs our guest, you will have the downstairs area almost entirely to yourself. There is one other occupied bedroom on this level. On the downstairs level, is also your shared bathroom and laundry with a spare refrigerator/freezer with extra space just for you. Because we have very limited parking, we ask that guests please arrive together in one vehicle. Enjoy walks thru the garden and surrounding trails, collect eggs from the hen house, and toss the chickens a handful of scratch. Depending on the season and what is available, we can harvest fresh greens and produce from the organic gardens to enjoy during your stay. The well-equipped kitchen is upstairs and you are welcome to use it for food prep between the hours of 8AM-12PM and 3PM-8PM. We are happy to work around your schedule if you let us know your plans. Make yourself at home, please just clean up after yourself. Gas grill is on the deck. Quiet hours between 8PM and 8AM. Interaction with GuestsWe are a household of three (our oldest is away at school), plus our two small (non-yappy) rescue dogs, Marcus & Hector. Being from here, we would love to chat about all the great stuff to do in the area or about our projects around the 'farm'. We also understand that people come here to enjoy the peace and solitude. Other than a brief tour of the place when you get here, we will make ourselves available to visit as suits the needs of our guests. We usually try to touch base about your schedule and breakfast plans when you check in. Breakfast and evenings, during kitchen/dining sharing times are the natural times that we come together to socialize, however at least one of us is available during the day if you need help with anything. Join us upstairs in the mornings for coffee/tea and breakfast, usually from the farm in some way or another. Fresh eggs, homemade jams & jellies, huckleberry flapjacks, mushrooms, herbs or whatever else inspires the menu that day. Curious about homestead life / chores? Just ask. Tania would be happy for you to shadow her on the morning routine or Jim would love to show you his mushroom farm or terraced food forest in the making. If you are feeling really adventurous maybe you even want to get your hands dirty on a project! There is usually some interesting thing to be done around here. That being said if all you want is quiet and solitude, this place is perfect and we can make that happen. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is secluded and quiet. We have neighbors, but we can’t see them. It’s awesome. The small town of Union, just minutes away, started as an artist colony and it still has that feel today. Live music a couple nights a week, several restaurants including a world-class resort, the Hood Canal and everything that comes with it... and so much more. There are always events and happenings going on around here, especially during the nicer months. Easy access to Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park. Twanoh State Park, with nice beach access and nature trails is only one mile up the road. About 45 minutes from the Bremerton-Seattle Ferry and 40 minutes from Olympia. Getting AroundA car is very helpful. We are right in the middle of so many entertainment and recreation options, but at the same time we are quite secluded. Access to our home is one mile off the main road up a single lane dirt road. AWD helpful, but not necessary (we drive 2WD compact cars.) Parking space is available. Other Things to NotePeople either love or hate our road. We have a beautiful 'top of the world' view, but it means a one-mile drive up a single lane dirt road to get here and not everyone is used to that. Just take it easy and go slow. Please be respectful of the neighbors. AWD is helpful, but by no means necessary... we all drive small 2 wheel drive vehicles.

The SpaceJust 20 minutes from Belfair, Washington, Sahale is an easy drive from Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, and the Olympic Peninsula. Sahale’s 68 acres hold many gifts: a large and quiet forest, an old orchard of many fruit varieties, and the most magical, a sacred grove of ancient cedars. The cathedral-like stillness within this 200 year old ring of cedars harmonizes with the rush of the Tahuya River, just yards away. The ever-changing river refreshes us, two bubbling springs quench our thirst, and a quiet pond stills us. Held close by hills and forest on one side, from the hot tub we enjoy the long, open vista over our valley toward the forested hills beyond the river. Thus it is that what we once dreamed has become a reality, a place we love to share. Sahale includes: 12,000 sq. feet of experimental permaculture gardens Orchards including apple, pear, walnuts, hazelnut, plum Beautiful lawns, ornamental gardens with benches, vistas and artwork Hot tubs Hiking and walking trails Beautiful river access Bird watching Indoor and outdoor meditation spaces Guest AccessYou will have full access to the house. Others may use the washer/dryer in the entryway. Please explore our land- trails will lead you to the Tahuya River and the cedar grove. There are multiple outdoor fire rings and wood available. You are also welcome to enjoy the cedar hot tubs, in which clothing is optional. Interaction with GuestsThere are several permanent residents and a medley of ecovillage interns who may be present. We encourage you to engage with anyone in the common spaces. Sahale provides space for privacy as well as opportunities for social interactions. We often have small community events and work parties- so please inquire if you'd like to know what else is happening during your stay. Other Things to NoteWe ask our guests to respect the privacy of our residents and the land at Sahale. We have camping grounds, homes and other shared spaces that are used by our 6-12 residents who come and go through the week. Sahale draws many who enjoy participating in community activities. If there are community projects happening while you are here and you would like to participate, please inquire!

YOUR VERY OWN DOCK AND BEACH We have a very large private beach and dock that is ready for your summer fun in the water. Your very own dock just waits for your sport boat to take you fishing, or water skiing, or tubing with kids across the canal. In the summer, the water warms to a wonderful temperature, and our area of Hood Canal is very popular for watersports. Kayaks, rowboat and paddleboat are available for additional cost. The beach is made up of smooth little pebbles on the upper area, and is great for the kids to play on. There is also a deck over the water that is comfortably furnished with outside furniture and a charcoal BBQ grill. The beach is park-like, and has no neighbors on one side, and infrequent vacationers on the other. The hedge and board fence insulate the landing area from the road, which is crossed to access the water from the house. Please note that as most Hood Canal docks do, the float will rest on the bottom during the lowest tide periods of some months. Twanoh State park is just a half mile away, and has a very nice boat launch. Boat trailer parking is available in front of the house. Gather the family around the large fire pit right on the beach for evening smores and hot dogs roasted right over the fire. This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beautiful beach at the end of the day and take in a spectacular pink sunset that the Hood Canal is famous for. Make some family memories that they will not soon forget! SHELLFISH Our private beach is full of oysters, horse clams, Manila clams, and mussels (on the dock float). Crabbing is available in season. The native Dungeness crabs are delicious! Our favorite way to prepare oysters is on our large double BBQ grill (We also have a second BBQ grill at the beach). Grilled oysters are really succulent and flavorful. We love to sit at the table on the deck, enjoy the view, and dine on seafood. Buckets, digging tools and oyster knives are provided. Please note that all Dept of Fisheries regulations apply, including required licenses and limits. SLEEPING ACCOMODATIONS Downstairs is a king bedroom off the main floor, furnished in rich, luxurious maroon and gold with a four poster bed. Also downstairs is a bath with shower. This bedroom is very comfortable for anyone in your group who may not want to go up and down stairs. Upstairs are the remaining bedrooms, all with canal and mountain views, as well as another bathroom with bathtub and shower. The first bedroom has a king canopy bed and daybed. Wake up to a beautiful view after a restful night’s sleep on our ultra-plush mattress. The daybed also has a very comfortable twin mattress and works well for little ones or adults. Next, we have two rooms, each with a set of bunk beds, which are perfect for the kids, but also adults with our very nice plush mattresses. One of these bedrooms has a TV with VCR and DVD player and seating for the kids entertainment. This makes a fun get-away for the kids to enjoy their own movie. The fifth bedroom, a queen room, also has a great view of the water, and a comfortable queen bed. All the mattresses, including the bunk beds, are plush top and very comfortable for adults as well as children. Upstairs is a second bathroom with bathtub/shower and laundry area with a full size washer and dryer. Laundry detergent is provided. All linens and towels are provided. Additional accommodations for our large groups include a queen size pull-out sleeper sofa in the living room which is also a fun cozy place for the youngsters to watch movies. We also have extra twin mattresses and folding futons for little ones. ADDITIONAL HOME DETAILS The home's open floor plan and expansive windows are perfect for entertaining, or just relaxing and taking in the 180 degree water view as it stretches below you and across the water to the majestic Olympic mountains. The house's main floor has a huge open kitchen, which is fully equipped with everything you might need to prepare meals for larger groups. The kitchen has many unique features, like an expansive 6' of butcher block installed for baking to your heart's content, and a vintage 50’s enameled Youngston sink. The major appliances include a large 40” stainless steel stove with two ovens, and a stainless steel side by side refrigerator with crushed, cubed, and water dispenser in the door, stainless steel microwave and dishwasher. The expansive countertop area and extended 50’s era sink easily accommodates several cooks at the same time. The bar is built into the expansive center island, and seats four with comfortable leather bar stools to keep the cooks company. Gather the family around our spacious dining table with seating for 6-8 people. Additional seating is at the adjacent kitchen island bar for four and also four more at the oak game table. The dining table has an excellent view of the water. The previous owners operated a restaurant on the property, and used the house kitchen for all the baking. The restaurant building is still on the property, and “old-timers” from the area still remember the succulent seafood and pies the restaurant was known for. Kitchen also features a skylight, glass block window, and rows of custom cabinetry filled with lots of small kitchen appliances, pots, pans, and a selection of spices. OUTDOOR DINING AND COOKING Experience dining 'alfresco' on the covered deck, no matter what the weather. You can hear the dock 'singing' to the ebb and flow of the tide, and smell the fresh salt tinged air from this dining vantage point. Also, listen for the bark of the seals, and cry of the herons as they fly overhead from the water to their perch in the cedars behind the house. The seals provide the entertainment! The deck is outfitted with a Chargriller double BBQ, with one side propane and the other side charcoal along with a side burner. Propane is provided. We love to grill up and oysters in the shell and steaks. The deck is furnished with comfortable padded chairs that you will not want to get up from! Additional seating is available on the deck as well to accommodate larger groups. ENTERTAINMENT In the living room is a 42' SMART TV, with BlueRay DVD player. We have Wavebroadband cable and high speed wireless internet. No LAN line phone service, however. Verizon cell phone signal is excellent. AREA DETAILS Hood Canal has been a vacation destination since the 1920’s, known for its beautiful views and abundant seafood, as well as warm summer waters. Our vacation home is on the preferred South Shore, which is also enjoyed by local well known families such as Bill Gates and the Nordstroms. Local amenities include golf, dining and evening musical entertainment at the world class Alderbrook Resort and Spa. The golf course consistently ranks as one of Washington state's top 25. Music concerts on the lawn, drinks at the bar or gourmet dining are yours, and only 10 minute drive along picturesque Hood Canal's South Shore. Also an attraction is the Robin Hood Restaurant, which features local musicians, and a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. Afterward you can return to the space and privacy of your vacation home. The town of Belfair is only a 10 minute drive away, and has a QFC, Safeway, RiteAid, Ace hardware (great place to get fishing supplies), and lots of small restaurants. Pizza delivery to the house is available from Seabeck Pizza. Our vacation home is far enough away to feel like a get-away, but close enough to make trips to town for groceries and supplies convenient. Many families I talk to have wonderful childhood memories of warm summer days spent on the beaches of Hood Canal, digging for clams and picking oysters. They want to recreate these memories for their families and youngsters. There is just something special about the area that is memorable and brings people back. Come discover Hood Canal for yourself, and we invite you to spend some time at our vacation home on the Hood Canal. I know you will enjoy it as much as our family does.
